When will the BBC wake up....?

OP posts:

@Bearnecessity So people's comments are "odd and strange" and they should post elsewhere because they don't agree with you? Why post in AIBU if you didn't want a discussion?

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 20/09/2020 17:10

What's the problem? She has great listening figures.
Same with footballers, the industry makes huge sums of money, why shouldn't the talent be the ones taking it home?

The reason there is so much focus on what presenters at the BBC get paid should be pretty obvious.

Fairyliz · 20/09/2020 17:14

Zoe Ball is paid £1.36 million. Now I like her and I think she is good at what she does but really?

Do you honestly think there is not anyone else equally talented who would do it for say £200,000?

People saying it is 'market forces' where exactly would these people go if not employed by the BBC? Its because they were employed by the BBC that they became famous

At the end of the day we are forced to pay these extortionate salaries through the licence fee.

lunar1 · 20/09/2020 17:15

Nobody working for the bbc should earn these amounts. It's paid for by TV taxes. There should be a pay structure in the same way that there is for most people paid from tax payers money and it should be transparent, much like the nhs pay scheme.

If presenters want more they can go work in the private sector, where people have a choice over subscribing.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 20/09/2020 17:15

Isn't it odd when people post in AIBU then can't tolerate the opinions of others? What's the point in the post if it's only people's agreement you want?

Goldenbear · 20/09/2020 17:19

Recruitment to these jobs is hardly fair or objective, the BBC/other TV jobs are impossible to get as unknown but why are they, I'm sure there are others out there that are just as talented, just as capable but are never going to gets look in. It's like some kind of secret society, it shouldn't be like that, it should be straight forward like working for the council.

JaniceBattersby · 20/09/2020 17:21

Why shouldn’t someone at the very top of their professional game, who has beaten off competition from thousands of others to do that job, be paid commensurately? She’s actually be on more if she were working for one of the privately-owned broadcasters but I’m glad she chooses to work for the BBC. They have to pay competitive rates if they want the best presenters - and I think the BBC is the best at what it does in the world because it does have the best in the business.

Sophiafour · 20/09/2020 17:22

A classic case of "Let them eat airwaves"....?

For me it's the timing of these announcements of the salaries paid that is particularly questionable, given how many ordinary people on ordinary wages or zero hours contracts are worried they might not have work in a few weeks' time.

I'd also like some say over how my (currently compulsory) BBC tax is allocated. BBC drama, some of the overseas work, documentaries, fine. BBC "news" or sport? Not so much, thank you. A realignment must be coming, in the wake of Netflix, Prime, Youtube and others, especially as the listener/viewer demographics finally shift....

If the BBC doesn't come up with new models, Netflix and Prime, amongst others, have some mighty fine programming these days...

Goldenbear · 20/09/2020 17:23

It's not a question of liking or not liking these people, you can still like Zoe Ball and want her to be paid 200,000 not ridiculous million +! It's all luck and nothing to do with being 'worth it'!

Deathraystare · 20/09/2020 17:24

It is always the women they whinge about.

I remember Terry (Mega bucks) Wogan when he retired was going on about the high wages. Well, you didn't complain when you got them did you mate?

FrippEnos · 20/09/2020 17:24

@trappedsincesundaymorn

Gary Lineker gets paid 1.75 mil. I'd be more outraged by that to be honest.
£1.3 million and now less than Zoe Ball.
SisterAgatha · 20/09/2020 17:25

She works harder than the Prime Minister of our country so don’t try and make out like he is earning every penny of his wage.

SisterAgatha · 20/09/2020 17:26

And Lauren worked really hard during lockdown, she pulled in extra hours at the drop of a hat, daily. Boris has fucked off on holiday at every opportunity.

PickAChew · 20/09/2020 17:26

Good for her. She's an extremely talented presenter and, as a PP said, very versatile.

I'd love to see how much serious jockin' gets paid.

CatSmith · 20/09/2020 17:26

Compared to Gary Linekar,, Chris Evans, Chris Moyles, Shes barely scrapping a living.
What’s your point?

Itwasaquarterpast11 · 20/09/2020 17:27

If that's the going rate for her job, good for her. If it's lower than men are paid for an equivalent job, shame on the BBC. Whether I think she is worth that much is irrelevant- she deserves to be paid a fair salary compared to her peers.
(But I do actually think she is great).

thedancingbear · 20/09/2020 17:28

I love Lauren Laverne! I'm glad she is being paid what she is worth

Goldenbear · 20/09/2020 17:29

It is men/women, regardless why is LL worth that. I don't know how anyone can determine that and break if down to value! Fucking ridiculous. Most TV is not diverse and doesn't reflect the diversity of society because it is so ridiculously hard to penetrate.

Hopoindown31 · 20/09/2020 17:29

I'd say she is worth it much more than the VC of Birmingham University who is paid a similar amount and thought it was a good idea to release a rambling, poorly shot video about COVID measures at the university that involved his PA Charlotte deferentially calling him "Vice-Chancellor" (she works with him every day fgs!) and having to jump up from her desk and stand by an open window every time someone wanted to have a meeting with him.

Haffdonga · 20/09/2020 17:30

No-one batting an eyelid that she is paid more than the prime minister of our country then

Well she certainly does a better job.

PickAChew · 20/09/2020 17:30

Oh, there we go
"Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright is on about £475,000."

The fact that he gets paid more than Lozza is an absolute travesty.

Devlesko · 20/09/2020 17:30

No more ludicrous than any other popular person's salary.
You can command this if you are popular in any industry, look at music and entertainment, it's not how talented you are it's how popular Grin

DollyDoneMore · 20/09/2020 17:30

How much do you think Amanda Holden gets paid to do the Heart breakfast show? Or Ronan Keating on Magic? Or Eddie Mair at LBC? Chris Evans at Virgin? Chris Moyles at Radio X?

Radio is probably at its most competitive ever, with commercial radio able to compete nationally with the BBC in multiple formats for the first due to the growth in digital radio listening. Lauren Laverne is a terrific broadcaster. I bet anyone from Absolute to LBC to Radio X to Virgin to Times Radio would love to have her.
