When will the BBC wake up....?

@StatisticalSense

The only problem I have with it is that it is significantly more than Greg James despite the fact he has substantially more listeners and Radio1 is literally meant to be a higher priority than 6 music. That is because it is yet another example of the BBC protecting the expenditure on programming aimed at middle aged middle class people while cutting back on or scrapping just about anything they can get away with that is aimed at under 30s.
Lauren Laverne also presents Desert Island Discs, the BBC Glastonbury coverage and late night Woman’s Hour. Greg James pretty much just presents his breakfast show.
WhatWouldJKRDo · 20/09/2020 18:00

Good for Lauren. Worth every bit of it.

Being Prime Minister isn't supposed to be a cash cow of a job, fgs. It's supposed to be public service and a great honour. If you're in it for the salary, you shouldn't be there.

(Johnson's in it because he thought it would be a lark)

Bearnecessity · 20/09/2020 18:01

Persephone...my thread title is a statement of fact. The opening message clearly refers to the BBC.... your syntax sensitivity and interpretation needs to check itself.

They did, although I only recognise three of those names. These people get much more for speaking fees, book launches etc if they have been on the BBC. It is disingenuous to say that anyone fucking noticed for example, the one show having its replacements.

StatisticalSense · 20/09/2020 18:04

@DollyDoneMore
Other than that isn't true. Greg also presents cricket coverage including a weekly podcast as well as various one off bits on TV and radio throughout the year (which would equate to a similar amount of work as a weekly episode of dessert island disks and the Glastonbury weekend)..

Choccylips · 20/09/2020 18:06

Yes these people are the ones that would see you through, if your dustbin man went on strike for more money and left the country with mountains of rubbish and rat infestations leading to another plague. If nhs staff went on strike for more money and you were left to die. If lorry drivers went on strike and you were all starving because there was no food on the shelves because they want more money. But you could all listen to LL or Gary Linekar etc whilst you slowly died a miserable death.

zafferana · 20/09/2020 18:06

I'm appalled at some of the salaries of the BBC's top names. No one is worth over a million quid a year to gab on about shite on the fucking radio. The sodding PM only gets £150k a year, so why the hell does Zoe Ball get over a million? And Gary bloody Lineker? It's a travesty.

You’re correct, but Desert Island Discs has far more prestige than a cricket podcast.

Goldenbear · 20/09/2020 18:10

One show woman Alex may earn more than LL (seriously?) Now but you are spectacularly missing my point, she didn't earn anything like that starting out. The ex one show presenter who now has that awful lunch programme, seemingly always about babies, left presumably for more money but it's hardly the end of the world, just advertise for someone else Nd you'll get a replacement. It's sso cringey that it genuinely seems like a BBC comedy Alan partridge sketch, 'please give me second series?'

Chicchicchicchiclana · 20/09/2020 18:12

OP - I agree that many of the BBC star celebrities are massively overpaid, along with any one individual earning more than, say, £250,000 pa in the UK at the present time whatever it is they do. There's just no need for salaries like this - individuals should stop being so fucking greedy.

fatbottomgirl67 · 20/09/2020 18:12

Still not as much at the waste of space that is Steve Wright. When will he and his ultra annoying crew get the boot. Worst show on the radio.
LL is brilliant and I'm sure working for the BBC earn her less than commercial stations. She is good at her job and produces an excellent show so surely she should be paid accordingly?

StatisticalSense · 20/09/2020 18:14

Although the biggest overpayment is probably Tina Daheley who gets £260,000 to read the news for about two minutes an hour on the Zoe Ball breakfast show...

DollyDoneMore · 20/09/2020 18:14

Also, I do believe it is possible to understand both that, in any rational world, Lauren Laverne isn’t worth 20 nurses or care workers, but in the media world that we have, her market worth is at least £400k (which, as someone said above, takes into account the BBC’s cultural cachet).

Leafbeans · 20/09/2020 18:15

Why her in particular? She has been on the music circuit for years and is really passionate about it, I'm happy for her that's she has a job that pays well and allows her to follow her passion. There are plenty of others on ridiculous wages.

crumpet · 20/09/2020 18:15

I used to work at the BBC. Loved it. But jumped ship when I was offered more than double my salary elsewhere. I have no idea what the market rate is for radio presenters, but the same will happen if the BBC cannot get near it.

Goldenbear · 20/09/2020 18:17

No, the cultural cachet is of benefit to them not the audience!

Buggedandconfused · 20/09/2020 18:18

And?

Dylaninthemovies1 · 20/09/2020 18:19

I don’t think if she was reading this at home on mumsnet she would be that bothered. She doesn’t have time to be sad

Bearnecessity · 20/09/2020 18:19

Thank you Chicci, I agree with you no-one needs more than £250,000 for any job and certainly not from a publicly funded organisation.

Yes, so she is partly being paid in cultural cachet. The commercial sector would need to pay her even more to poach her - her market value is over £400k.
ValleyoftheTrolls · 20/09/2020 18:24

I’m still gutted that Sara Cox didn’t get the breakfast show gig 😞 but actually, I hear more of the drive time show than breakfast show so it worked out better I guess.

Cannot bear Zoe Ball so listen to local radio instead and am gobsmacked at the amount she is paid; ridiculous!

I miss Terry Wogan and get a shock if they play his voice on the radio, there should be a warning first! ☺️

ValleyoftheTrolls · 20/09/2020 18:25

She is also on Radio 5 though reading the news.
VinylDetective · 20/09/2020 18:29

I love Laverne. There are many other huge salaries that make me crosser. Zoe Ball for a start.

mumsthewurd · 20/09/2020 18:29

Not sure if Lauren would be happy to take a pay cut and sort out the bloody mess that Boris has got the country into. But she'd do a better job I'm sure.

dollypartonscoat · 20/09/2020 18:30

"Naff off" 😂

Are you from the 80s?
