When will the BBC wake up....?

No-one batting an eyelid that she is paid more than the prime minister of our country then

You know the PM isn’t supposed to receive a HUGE salary for a very good reason?

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/09/2020 20:40

Being Prime Minister isn't supposed to be a cash cow of a job, fgs. It's supposed to be public service and a great honour. If you're in it for the salary, you shouldn't be there.

Exactly. LL is making her money NOW. Prime Ministers and other in those types of jobs are looking forward. To the very lucrative public speaking, consulting, writing books money that they receive AFTER being PM. Set for life, unlike a DJ.

Mildura · 20/09/2020 20:44

@PersephonePromotesEquanimity

I don't think Liverpool or Man City are funded by the public though.

Erm ...

Nobody is forced to pay to watch a Liverpool or Man City match, or subscribe to Sky Sports though, in the way a TV licence to fund the BBC is effectively compulsary.
Bearnecessity · 20/09/2020 20:47

MrsTerry DJs have a very long shelf-life these days especially if they have hit the acclaim that warrants LLs salary, she isn't going to be claiming UC in ten years.

@XiCi

I personally think she’s not diverse enough - too white and middle class, that’s all

WTAF. She was brought up in a working class family in Sunderland. And too white?

hardly working class when her father was a sociology lecturer at Newcastle University,
sst1234 · 20/09/2020 21:01

There is nothing obscene about private or publicly listed firms paying a billion dollars if they want to. There is everything wrong with taxpayers money being wasted on mediocrity. Whether it be in quangos or on the radio. The reason these people end up at the BBC is because no commercial broadcaster would pay them these amounts as they are simply not up to it.

Thurmanmurman · 20/09/2020 21:40

And?

Leafbeans · 20/09/2020 21:42

How can an individual person not be diverse enough? I understand if someone said the organisation isn't diverse enough, but why single out LL, and to describe it that way is odd.

katy1213 · 20/09/2020 22:07

But she ruined Desert Island Discs.

VinylDetective · 20/09/2020 22:10

@katy1213

But she ruined Desert Island Discs.
Not for me she didn’t. She made me want to listen to it again.
WiddlinDiddlin · 20/09/2020 22:11

Meh... thats how much you'd need to pay ME to drag my arse out of bed at probably 5am every weekday to witter at the nation, interview people etc for four hours a day AND then prep, write and record another show as well.

She does more than just turn up and read, and radio DJ is not the easiest job in the world funnily enough.

Theres also the impact on every day life, working for the BBC theres some pressure to be pretty squeaky clean and some pretty public examples of what goes wrong when folk aren't squeaky clean. One fuck up and thats your income gone... you don't even need to actually fuck up, just have folk suggest they have evidence that you have.

No ta!

StarUtopia · 20/09/2020 22:13

I don't think ANYONE who does a meaningless job like this should be paid more than £50k (and that's being generous)

I would reserve high salaries for surgeons and medical experts personally.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/09/2020 22:19

Is it a meaningless job?

SisterAgatha · 20/09/2020 22:26

*NotABridezillaToBe

She works harder than the Prime Minister of our country so don’t try and make out like he is earning every penny of his wage.

Are you her mum or something?!*

I’m not, no. Are you Carrie Symonds?

If you are, there plenty of low budget recipes, cheap childcare options and ideas on how to make a fiver last all week on here Grin

OutComeTheWolves · 20/09/2020 23:18

Well the prime minister is fucking up the country at an alarming rate and LL is good at her job so it doesn't bother me that she earns more than him.

I'd be more interested to learn how her salary compares to her male counterparts.

Feelingconfused2020 · 20/09/2020 23:28

What a ridiculous thread, people aren't paid according to how hard they work. Do you not actually realise this?

A newly qualified nurse gets paid roughly £21000. That's 20 times less that LL. Does LL work 30 times as hard? Clearly.not. if we could take money away from LL or the PM or professional footballers and give it to nurses then great but that's not how it works is it?

So you either have a political point, in which case perhaps you are a socialist/communist and can't possibly only be cross with Lauren Laverne or you are being unreasonable.

On the specific point of Lauren Laverne vs Greg James - although I like both of them I think he only does 4 shows a week while she does 5 so that makes a difference. Tailenders isn’t weekly, it’s about 10 hour long shows a year, and not really comparable to Desert Island Discs which is a flagship role.

I grant you that in terms of pounds earned per members of the public earned per hour he’s probably better VFM than she is.

Goldenbear · 21/09/2020 00:08

I don't think it makes you a commie to question the absurd pay of those employed by what is a public-funded organisation! As I highlighted earlier there are plenty of people that could be recruited fairly and objectively for these jobs that would be fine doing them, a good example of this is The One Show- I don't even like the show but it proves how no one bats an eyelid when these people do leave the BBC for more money. This isn't the private sector, there should be much more scrutiny and accountability, where are the fair recruitment practices, nowhere to be seen! How are their recruitment practices going to reflect the diversity of society when they are not based on mertiocracy.

RaspberrySkies · 21/09/2020 00:13

💖 LL

If you read over the thread, you will find an answer to your very profound, 'And?'.
