When will the BBC wake up....?

I discovered Lauren Laverne's shown during lockdown and will really miss it if we ever go back to the office! What surprised me is that I'm sure she does the voiceover on a couple of radio adverts (also listen to Absolute 80s Grin), surely she doesn't need the extra cash?

southeastdweller · 20/09/2020 18:32

It's obscene, like so many of the salaries for some people who work for the BBC and I object that so much money is wasted. Vanessa Feltz is on a similar amount but the gap in talent and charisma is huge.

Bearnecessity · 20/09/2020 18:35

Yes dolly..pretty much....me trying to be polite..ishh!😂

I bet they could get people to do these jobs who are 'good enough' and don't expect massive salaries.

Insaneinthemembury · 20/09/2020 18:43

She's worth that.
Gary Lineker and zoe ball? No way. Zoe ball getting paid a million makes me want to boycott my licence fee. She's bloody terrible.

MilerVino · 20/09/2020 18:43

No-one batting an eyelid that she is paid more than the prime minister of our country then

Laverne does a great job. The PM is wrecking the country for generations to come, so no, I've no issue with it.

Johnson will also have many chances to make extra cash on the side and is basically running the country in order to line his and his friends' pockets with cash. Johnson is a crook.

DimidDavilby · 20/09/2020 18:44

I fucking love Lauren Laverne.

Goldenbear · 20/09/2020 18:47

You don't think people who work on the BBC will have opportunities to earn cash as a result of their BBC association? That never happens does it.

yescheese · 20/09/2020 18:49

Why LL in particular? She's really knowledgeable and switched on about music as well as an engaging presenter.

MintyMabel · 20/09/2020 18:49

No one complains at the legions of useless men being paid the net worth of a small country

Lots of people complain about that.

galgaf12 · 20/09/2020 18:54

Zoe Ball lost 1 million listeners.

How is that worth a pay rise?

Goldenbear · 20/09/2020 18:55

Lots of people know loads about music, in the way that LL does, she is appealing to a certain generation of listeners but why does that make her worthy of a £400,000 salary, it so much money, so much money, people are talking about is as if it's hardly anything.

NotABridezillaToBe · 20/09/2020 19:10

I would imagine if the BBC started paying less competitive wages then all the presenters couldn’t exactly go to the commercial sector as they aren’t enough jobs there for all of them. The BBC employs a huge amount of presenters. Perhaps then the average commercial wage would go down, supply and demand and all that.

Being knowledgeable about music and having a decent personality aren’t exactly ‘unicorn’ attributes are they?!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 20/09/2020 19:19

Whilst I do think it is unfair to single her out as gary lineker is a wildly overpaid, self important twat I think she has absolutely ruined Desert Island Discs and I cannot bear the sound of her voice.
She seems wildly unprepared compared to previous host-Kirsty Young.
I used to love it and I can not bear it now-seems a very watered down format. I assume I am no longer the target audience.

tarasharp · 20/09/2020 19:23

I don’t understand£ why people are saying no one complains about what men earn. Course they do. I’ve seen lots of threads where people gripe about certain males. Chris Evans comes to mind.

beepbeepsheep · 20/09/2020 19:28

Yeah! Wake up BBC! She's only really talented, personable, charismatic and has good taste in music. FFS what are you like BBC?!

NotABridezillaToBe · 20/09/2020 19:34

400k for how many hour’s work a week? None of the attributes you listed warrant that.

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 20/09/2020 19:35

People complain about incredibly high salaries paid to men in the public eye. But most men earning similar sums are relatively anonymous - and lauded for being "good providers", ambitious, whatever.

beepbeepsheep · 20/09/2020 19:55

@NotABridezillaToBe You're right there, there's obviously far more worthy candidates for that sort of salary but I feel the issue with that probably isn't something I can tackle to be honest.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 20/09/2020 20:27

@popcornlover

She’s not very talented. Bottom class at everything she tries to turn her hand to. She owes her career to the fact she dated a music journalist when she was younger - she made all the connections she needed then dumped him. Kerry Katona has more personality, and that’s saying something. I can see why she might appeal to MNers though.
Misogynistic claptrap

How many men on the radio 'owe their career to dating someone'? Funny how that is only ever levelled at women 🤔

DaisyDando · 20/09/2020 20:29

I like LL and hope she enjoys the money.

galgaf12 · 20/09/2020 20:31

Because it's only ever women who do it.Smile

ILoveAnOwl · 20/09/2020 20:34

She had ruined desert island discs. I will never forgive her for it.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 20/09/2020 20:37

I know, isn’t it great!
Let’s celebrate a woman being paid terrifically for doing a great job.

cabingirl · 20/09/2020 20:39

BBC pays a lot less for the main talent than other broadcasters - that's why often after a few years getting the 'prestige' of working for the Beed they go and get a much higher paid offer somewhere else.

Acting/TV presenting/radio personalities etc are very well paid at the top end - whether that's morally okay when compared to essential services like nurses, teachers etc is a different issue. That's what the market is paying right now.

Hardly any jobs have the pay based on how 'hard' someone works or how much effort it takes to do that job.

For acting and media jobs you also have to remember that for a lot of people they spend ten+years working for free or very little to get known. So then you have to balance the pay when they've 'made it' against the whole of their career. Also unlike other careers they might only get that 4K salary for a short window while they are in fashion. So you have to balance it against ten years barely any salary while they are getting to their peak and then the sometimes 20+ years while they struggle to stay in the spotlight. If they are sensible they would save like crazy and fund a pension plan during their first big career period.
