This is a tricky one. I loathe Boris Johnson - but this is about any PM. Not just him.

Yes, they get the flat at Downing Street. It's rent free. He doesn't have commuting costs.

But this is the top job in the country. Massive responsibility. Lots of hours of work.

Should the PM be paid more? (any PM BTW)

The MPs' salary received by Commons Ministers is set independently by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA).

winterisstillcoming · 21/09/2020 21:29

I can't remember any other PM having money problems. Lordy should he really be running the country if he cannot budget for his own private life?

Maybe he should look for a better paying job.

hellotesting123123 · 21/09/2020 21:33

On Bojo specifically, I'm sure he has more than enough family wealth to support those poor sprogs of his dotted around the country.

I don't think PMs do that job for the money - they do it because of status. And so many of them are rich already, publicly schooled etc, the money just feels like a nice bonus.

Cattenberg · 21/09/2020 22:12

I think MPs are overpaid. Some of them are completely out of touch with the lives of most of their constituents.

You can become an MP without qualifications or relevant experience, you almost certainly won’t be fired for not doing any work and the starting salary is nearly £82k plus very generous expenses.

My MP and a neighbouring MP are both lazy, but they are in safe Tory seats, so they know they can get away with it.

Pepperwort · 21/09/2020 22:33

I’d rather see the obscene salaries elsewhere capped and brought back into line with the rest of the British economy.

Mittens030869 · 21/09/2020 22:35

I must admit to being surprised that a PM’s salary isn’t higher than that, but sorry, no sympathy from me. He chose to throw his hat into the ring when the post was up for grabs, and that was only a year ago.

Copperas · 26/04/2021 13:44

It seems that now he has enough income to spend what seems to be at least £100,000 on doing up what is effectively a tied cottage!

fruitbrewhaha · 26/04/2021 13:58

Well he is fucking idiot then. He knew is outgoings, 6 kids is going to be expensive, he should have budgeted accordingly.

He should have made hay while the sun shone. He could have had all kinds of lucrative investments paying him a healthy dividend while he is PM.

Then when he leaves number 10 he can go on to make a fortune as after dinner speaker or shareholder of greensill or similar, his earning potential is enormous.

supermoonrising · 26/04/2021 14:17

I'd be happy to quadruple the salarary part of the PM..... on the caveat they don't get to hand out dodgy contracts to mates while in office, don't accept invitations to party on corrupt billionaires yachts, don't get to decide who gets to be a Lord etc, don't build massive property portfolios, don't get to work for foreign governments or certain key global institutions or thinktanks on retirement and dont go on the US lecture circuit. Our "public servants" do all those.

stackemhigh · 26/04/2021 14:21

I don't think should.

They also rack up massive expenses and then make millions doing consultant roles after their gig's up. Tony Blair has made millions.

supermoonrising · 26/04/2021 14:21

Has the sociopathic prick resigned yet?

ViciousJackdaw · 26/04/2021 14:22

I was in Sainsburys earlier, there was a mum there with a child who was whining for sweets. She told him if she bought sweets, there'd be nothing left to get the food for tonight's tea.

I bet Carrie never has to have that conversation. No sympathy for Johnson whatsoever.

Londongent · 26/04/2021 14:30

I think that the PM and all MP's should be paid a lot more....not this current shower...I mean the salary should be higher so that it attracts the brightest minds to become MP's rather than going into private industries. The current lot do not deserve more

PicsInRed · 26/04/2021 14:36

Boris and Carrie should just cut back on the avo toast. Their savings will accumulate in no time. 🌈

Anita87 · 26/04/2021 15:11

Hmmm, wasn't the idea behind the benefit cap that people shouldn't have more children if they cannot afford it? Well, Boris, live up to your own standards...

LegoPoliceman · 26/04/2021 15:21

If it's beyond the wit of someone to live comfortably on five times the national average, then they probably aren't suitable material for prime minister.
(In addition to the many, many other reasons why he isn't suited for this position).

RincewindsHat · 26/04/2021 15:36

No, the PM should be paid significantly less.

That way, maybe the role would attract a better calibre of person who is actually interested in getting useful things done rather than playing silly political games and handing out billions to their under-performing cronies and wasting tax payers money while cutting funding to essential services.

ClarkeGriffin · 26/04/2021 15:38

For the shoddy job he is doing, he should be receiving a hell of a lot less. They all should. What is it now to be an mp, 75k? My mp is beyond hopeless, only voted in based on their party. We'd be no worse off with a fish in charge.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 26/04/2021 16:05

but he has carte blanche to recruit helpful aides like cummings to delegate everything to.

sunstreaming · 27/04/2021 14:42

To chocolateforme: when people stop being PM they usually either go to the House of Lords, or re-engage with their previous job e.g. something wellpaid in finance/company directorship etc. They can also earn an eye wateringly large amount by doing after dinner speeches. Your concern about 'what they do for housing wages etc'. is completely misplaced. And have you ever heard of an ex-PM being homeless and destitute.

ladygindiva · 27/04/2021 14:45

150k without paying accommodation costs or commuting costs is enough for anyone ffs. Yabu.

jasjas1973 · 27/04/2021 14:50

Its not a lot, considering the responsibility.

Most CEO's wouldn't get out of bed to earn that amount.

Paying MPs far more, curtailing their expenses and having proper regulatory powers to jail them if they lie or cheat the tax payer is the way forward.

France has manged to chuck some politicians in prison, we don't seem to be able too.

Alsohuman · 27/04/2021 14:50

The brightest minds aren’t necessarily motivated by money. In fact, they’re usually not or there would be no academics.
Reinventinganna · 27/04/2021 14:56

Didn’t he say about nurses pay that they knew the salary before taking the job?
Same goes for the buffoon.

CarrieBlue · 27/04/2021 15:10

He’d probably not find it so difficult if he wasn’t snobby about John Lewis furnishings, didn’t procreate do freely and made it a government priority to fund education properly so he didn’t ‘have’ to pay school fees for any number of children. Not needing to pay a divorce settlement of £2000000 would also help his financial ‘problems’ too.

Other prime ministers managed just fine.

Other public employees have to put up with low salaries because ‘it’s a vocation’, no reason why MPs should be any different.
