This is a tricky one. I loathe Boris Johnson - but this is about any PM. Not just him.

Yes, they get the flat at Downing Street. It's rent free. He doesn't have commuting costs.

But this is the top job in the country. Massive responsibility. Lots of hours of work.

Should the PM be paid more? (any PM BTW)

Seriously?!?!?!

mbosnz · 19/09/2020 20:21

I guess you could say that 'you get what you pay for'.

I bloody wish.

chomalungma · 19/09/2020 20:21

Plus they are an MP so they get the MP’s salary too, including constituency living allowance

I thought this includes MP's salary.

The CEO of the charity I used to work for gets paid £180k and mainly just swans around visiting projects. So yes I think the PM probably should get more than he does for the responsibility he takes.

mineofuselessinformation · 19/09/2020 20:22

Are you on glue???? Grin
You have properly made me chuckle. Poor old Boris. Hmm

megletthesecond · 19/09/2020 20:22

Ha, no!
He should stop having children he can't afford and live within his means.

SuzieCarmichael · 19/09/2020 20:22

And in relation to this prime minister in particular, if he can earn £250k a year as a newspaper columnist alone (not even including his political salaries as an MP and as Mayor of London, let alone his book deals etc) and he hasn’t put anything by for his many children ... well that’s not exactly poverty to me. It’s poor financial planning.

Totickleamockingbird · 19/09/2020 20:22

He should have thought about this before becoming a PM and before having yet another baby with yet another, much younger woman who by the way should get a fucking job like the rest of us to support her partner and family. Hmm

JaJaDingDong · 19/09/2020 20:22

Yes, they get the flat at Downing Street. It's rent free

The PM is taxed on the accommodation as a benefit in kind.

Boris has given up a lucrative job writing for the Daily Telegraph, and appearance fees on TV programmes he used to do.

I think the PMs salary shouldn't be so high that people are attracted to the position for the salary, but it should recognise the responsibility the role carries. £150k isn't all that much relative to what our captains of industry earn, nor to GPs and other medical people, head teachers, vets, lawyers and many other jobs.

It's only just over 3x my salary and I don't hold a particularly exciting or responsible job.

anonacatchat · 19/09/2020 20:23

A huge amount of people at my work earn more than 150k ... WAY WAY more plus lots of perks.

I don't... but a lot do

You could not pay me 150k to be PM

Also he is taxed as benefit in kind for NO11 flat so it's not free and food is paid for

felineflutter · 19/09/2020 20:23

£350 seems about right. FFS Zoe Ball gets paid 5 times more than Boza! Grin

felineflutter · 19/09/2020 20:23

350k not £s Grin

mum2jakie · 19/09/2020 20:23

He can always fuck off and get a better paid job. Fingers crossed 🤞

chomalungma · 19/09/2020 20:24

As I said...this is not about Boris.

I know they get a lot of benefits, Chequers etc.

I remember watching Yes Prime Minister and he wrangled it so there was an official dinner most nights so he didn't need to get a cook.

OP posts:
anonacatchat · 19/09/2020 20:24

He is NOT living rent free

Thingsdogetbetter · 19/09/2020 20:24

Hahaha! Ffs
Free accommodation, free food, no bills, no limit on expenses etc etc.

Even at his salary, it's short term 'low wage' for long term investment. He'll be getting millions in consultatancy/speaking fees the minute he's not PM.

potatoofftheblock · 19/09/2020 20:25

@chomalungma

This really isn’t the top job in the country

What job do you think is the top job then?

I think The Queen probably claims that title.
Dustballs · 19/09/2020 20:25

He should be doing it for the love - not the money.

Who wants a PM whose in it just for the money?

It’s bad enough having Boris who wanted the job to boost his own ego. That hasn’t worked so now he’s complaining he’s not paid enough.

MarshaBradyo · 19/09/2020 20:25

They do make it up afterwards with speaking etc

But salary isn’t high

AGoatAteIt · 19/09/2020 20:26

Tbh even if £150k a year was low he used to get paid nearly double that to write pish in his newspaper column. He should be utterly minted so I assume he’s made poor financial decisions (like having loads of kids to presumably put through private education and costly divorces). Tough shit.

alreadytaken · 19/09/2020 20:26

If we ever get a good one they might be worth more - but Boris certainly is not.

noblegiraffe · 19/09/2020 20:26

Given how he was lecturing teachers about moral duty, he should consider it his moral duty to not whinge about the pay packet for the job he fought to do.

mbosnz · 19/09/2020 20:26

If it could be made performance related, that would be good. So, how many Cobra meetings did the unesteemed PM attend during the first wave of corona?

How many international obligations and contracts is he intent upon breaking?

How 'oven ready' was that brexit agreement, and where are we at now?

How well is that fella doing at PMQ's - answering the actual bloody questions, rather than ineffectually blustering and then saying that the opposition are being oppositional?

Brighterthansunflowers · 19/09/2020 20:26

I have absolutely no sympathy for anyone on that amount of money with no housing or commuting costs plus hefty expense claims.

He shouldn’t have gone round fathering unknown numbers of children and having just had another one, if he couldn’t afford them. The tax payer shouldn’t be responsible for the PM’s inability to wear condoms. We’re already facing the consequences of his inability to do his job.

Cornettoninja · 19/09/2020 20:26

Being PM is about prestige and power. The £££ come afterwards (no living ex-PM is living in poverty now) when they get paid big bucks to bore on at paid functions and make use of all the connections being PM opens up.

They can take a few years on a ‘lower’ salary. Don’t want them getting distracted by becoming shopaholics and champagne parties whilst they’re meant to be working anyway.
