This is a tricky one. I loathe Boris Johnson - but this is about any PM. Not just him.

Yes, they get the flat at Downing Street. It's rent free. He doesn't have commuting costs.

But this is the top job in the country. Massive responsibility. Lots of hours of work.

Should the PM be paid more? (any PM BTW)

@Darker

Carrie Symmons has appointed her own advisor as First Lady ( on a salary six figure salary). Only First Lady so to do. She can also claim a clothing tax allowance. Ms Symmons has a £50k salary and net worth of around £1 million.

Fascinating. Do you mind saying where that info is from?

@CherryPavlova ok when you put it like that then yes he has more than enough to get by on comfortably!

VinylDetective · 20/09/2020 11:35

@CherryPavlova, that isn’t true. Unless it’s changed in the last three years.

^The Prime Minister is paid £150,402 a year. This includes the basic salary for a member of parliament which is currently £74,962. It doesn't factor in the value of the Prime Minister's flat in Downing Street, or her other official residences.

There is no First Lady of the UK and the PM's current girlfriend is just that, his girlfriend and the mother of his latest child.

Darker · 20/09/2020 11:36

Thanks, justfinefornow. Money coes from the Conservative Party coffers, apparently. I wonder how Ms Symonds charitable work has been furthered since then?

Party officials indicated Vaughan-Brown's role will see her assist Symonds's charitable work in special areas of interest — the environment and animal cruelty, combating violence against women and supporting the armed forces. Symonds — herself a former Conservative party director of communications — is also employed by the Oceana charity, where she has worked with Mike Bloomberg's philanthropic foundation on its "Vibrant Oceans" project.

Perhaps he should be hourly paid.

Save taxpayer a fortune!

aquashiv · 20/09/2020 11:40

Should be performance linked.
With agreed objectives.
This clown would us money

Given that Theresa May banked £1 million in speeches over the last year (on top of her MP’s salary and expenses), maybe that will spur Johnson into fucking off ASAP for a life of after dinner piffling?

I don’t think he needs the financial incentive. I think he’s filed being PM under Just too difficult and wants out now.
ZarasHouse · 20/09/2020 12:10

We are paying £150k for a replaceable puppet. I'm sure the people pulling his strings will be earning much more than that.

alphabetti · 20/09/2020 12:17

Boris receives a very good salary and has housing etc for free. Him and his pals think that ordinary workers and their families should be able to manage on low wages and his party decided to cap UC at 2 children so he surely can’t complain if he decides to have more than that.

I definitely think MPs should be paid on performance and in my opinion he is not performing good enough.

And yes a clap is good enough for our NHS/care staff and teaching staff especially TAs working with the most vulnerable children are expected to survive on £14k so why should he expect to receive more yet expect keyworkers to survive on low wages.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 20/09/2020 12:19

I am in support of MP’s being paid more

They should not be able to sit on any boards. If they have their own business they should appointment a stand in ceo and director

The work that can absolutely have no influence on their political work (football referee) i think is acceptable but I guess that could in a way influence them at some point

ZarasHouse · 20/09/2020 12:20

Everything in Boris' life is a mess. His personal life, the way he's handling his job as PM (both regarding Brexit and Covid 19, as well as generally) so I'm not surprised his finances are a mess too. I can imagine him making a mess out of his opportunities after being PM too. His journalistic style is a mess too. He's the kind of person you could give a million pounds too to invest and he'd have nothing but a handful of post it notes saying 'I.O.U' and no shoes on in a week. He's also as much use as a chocolate teapot and can't organise a piss up in a brewery. Basically the only criteria he met to be PM are white, male, privileged background, Eton. All things I don't give a crap about. Competent and reliable would do!

rachelvbwho · 20/09/2020 12:22

He doesn't pay rent, bills or any commuting/travel costs for his work and I imagine that if he travels for personal reasons that is covered too through his security. He also has a "holiday home" at Chequers he is free to use.... So I think that 150k is more than adequate as a disposable income.

Other people who are mentioned in this thread as being paid more will have to pay the above mentioned bills/expenses so I don't feel sorry for him at all (especially when he knew the salary before he hunted down the job).

Yoloyohol · 20/09/2020 12:56

Paying fees for Beadales, Westminster and Highgate schools, is going to eat away at any salary.
I do think he should shut the fuck up about his bloated sense of entitlement when he's creating so much debt for so many.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 20/09/2020 12:59

I’ve always thought it was quite a low salary for the amount of responsibility. Plus the flat at Downing Street is a benefit in kind I believe so he actually pays extra tax on that.

The CEO of the academy trust I work for is on a much higher salary than the PM!

justfinefornow · 20/09/2020 13:00

It is an absolute disgrace that someone who is doing his job so badly would think he’s not paid enough! If we paid him more would he do his job any better?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 20/09/2020 13:02

It would be interesting to know how much a PM costs the public. Not just the salary, housing, bills etc when in office but all the security afterwards.

Oncemorewithfeelin · 20/09/2020 13:05

I think we should be deducting money from Boris for how shit he’s been.

However the PM should be paid a better salary in general. You want to attract the best people for the job.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 20/09/2020 13:06

So many posters saying he doesn’t have housing costs! It would be very silly of him to not maintain a private residence as he has NO job security and can be out of the PM job with very little notice for various reasons. Remember all MPs are only ever an election away from being out of work!

I’m not a fan of the man but there is no way I would put up with all the crap that is thrown at him for that salary!

Tippexy · 20/09/2020 13:07

@SuzieCarmichael

Those of you who think it’s low: what would your wage be if it included your housing, transport, food, bills incl phone etc ... the prime minister’s earnings don’t total £160k, they get a massive amount of benefits in kind. Plus they are an MP so they get the MP’s salary too, including constituency living allowance.

Obviously they also have the use for free of a massive country mansion which includes all food and bills and transport there too.

So add that to your notional personal salary package.

Now, tell me - if you had all that, how much would you estimate that you earn?

It’s 150k all in, not with another MP salary on top.

It really isn’t enough for the role of PM, in my opinion.

Dee1975 · 20/09/2020 13:12

I agree with you op, it is very low pay for the job. I too read this article yesterday and didn’t realise the flat was taxed as BIK!
However, you don’t do that job ‘for the money’ and the money they will make after will be a lot just because they were PM. After dinner speaker, books etc ....
I do however think that the ‘expense’ policy for all PMs needs to be updated and all the loop holes closed!

countrygirl99 · 20/09/2020 13:13

I'd have no pronouncements with a good Prime Minister getting double that salary. But for this one it seems way too much.
