This is a tricky one. I loathe Boris Johnson - but this is about any PM. Not just him.

Yes, they get the flat at Downing Street. It's rent free. He doesn't have commuting costs.

But this is the top job in the country. Massive responsibility. Lots of hours of work.

Should the PM be paid more? (any PM BTW)

Yep!! I thing 150,000 is not a lot!! Free house And cars included , and a weekend retreat!! But when you think Zoe Ball is on over one million just for getting up early and talking waffle on the radio and host on strictly extra For a couple of months a year!! Just does not add up!!

chomalungma · 20/09/2020 17:43

This is not about Johnson....although clearly people have zero sympathy for him.

What should the Leader of a country get paid?

Clearly there are opportunities afterwards - but what should they get paid in comparison to heads of other public bodies for example?

Even if you take the percs of the job into account.

Clearly the buck stops with him - but it's rare to see a PM be forced to resign though.

@justfinefornow aye right! You really believe they've clamped down on that?!

@shotby3armedbastards (great username) haha great that not a typo

FudgeBrownie2019 · 20/09/2020 18:07

£150k doesn't sound a great deal compared to some salaries but since Johnson has spent however many years hankering after the position (whilst simultaneously trying to fuck every woman within a 50 yard radius) he should have known he needed to manage his money more astutely and the fact he hasn't/doesn't simply proves that he is now inept as a Husband, Father, Politician and Human. It's simply another tick on the great list of "What Has Boris Fucked Now".

VinylDetective · 20/09/2020 18:10

@Stinkyguineapig

I wonder how much Dominic Cummings is paid?
£90k apparently. Despite being the real PM.
derxa · 20/09/2020 18:34

I’m a fan of the last leg I'm not. In fact I loathe it.

It’s not about what I believe - there was evidence before and their should be now, if it is still a widespread problem. I believe we should pay our MPs more - they cannot rely on a lucrative after dinner speech career when they leave parliament Like Mr Johnson can - but they should Be forced to give up their part time jobs.

Pedallleur · 20/09/2020 18:51

Don't think anyone has left # 10 and been worse off. Blair became a millionaire, Cameron increased his earnings. Think Thatcher did as well. But Dennis was rich. If Boris quit tomorrow there won't be a shortage of takers for the job. Rees-Mogg and Gove alone would have a fight off. Boris isn't and won't be poor. Ruled by his little head, that's what has cost him money.

ChaChaCha2012 · 20/09/2020 18:56

Clearly the buck stops with him - but it's rare to see a PM be forced to resign though.

Can't you see the contradiction in that statement? For the next five years he's only accountable to his own MPs, who in a large part were selected as they are yes men.

user1487194234 · 20/09/2020 19:18

If it is 150k I think that's low
I can earn that in a good year )not this year!)
and think the PM has a much harder job, lack of privacy etc

LunaNightSky · 20/09/2020 19:38

He can have a clap like he suggested for the NHS workers (he's already had his pay rise)

His partner should get a job to contribute to the childcare or look after the child herself "or just stop having children they cannot afford".

Maybe Boris can work from home and look after the child?? You know, like the rest of us have been doing for eight months..

Do one, really.

to think the PM should be paid more?
VinylDetective · 20/09/2020 19:55

So half a million and he’s still impoverished. Makes you wonder how much it would take to be enough.

SabrinaThwaite · 20/09/2020 20:10

Well £250k for the Torygraph column whilst London Mayor was “chicken feed”.

And with people like Johnson in charge, so utterly and completely out of touch with real life for the vast majority of the country, we still wonder there are more than 4 million children living in poverty in the UK?

Thatusernamewastaken · 20/09/2020 20:12

It should be performance related, and on this performance, he should be paying us. Bloke, predictably, is a shambles.

chomalungma · 20/09/2020 20:25

Yes - it is contradictory.

Ministers resign. Or are sacked. And can lose a lot of money when this happens.

The buck should stop with the PM. If there is a 'buck'.

I guess PM's do resign though. Theresa May was one. Cameron another.

OP posts:
Graphista · 20/09/2020 23:12

@justfinefornow of course there's evidence! What's lacking is the political will for investigations! We're all being distracted by all the other shit going on!

Makes you wonder how much it would take to be enough.

Meanwhile elsewhere talk of ANOTHER freeze to benefits and public sector pay, plus the 100,000's of redundancies plus pay cuts in the private sector thanks to shite, incompetent governance!

Bendybarbarabee · 20/09/2020 23:17

It’s a very stressful job and we need people of the highest ability to want to do it. So I don’t have a problem in theory with the PM as a position being paid more. The same goes for MPs to a lesser degree.

BUT what I object to is that they can do a truly shit and shocking job, and still get paid! Perhaps part of it should be payable based upon approval ratings?

(Either way they’ll make a killing out of it on the after dinner circuits and with autobiographies etc after stepping or being voted down)

TempestHayes · 20/09/2020 23:23

Doff yer cap to the Lord, love.

Pandacub7 · 21/09/2020 09:28

@Justajot

I think Keir Starmer would happily do the job for £150k and probably be better at it.
Starmer has a high salary and probably has more in the bank than Johnson. Both are on high salaries with lots of expenses paid for.

ancientgran · 21/09/2020 09:32

I would pay him what he deserves, pennies would be generous, buttons appropriate.

nevermorelenore · 21/09/2020 09:40

I think the salary is about right, when you compare with other nations:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_salaries_of_heads_of_state_and_government

Probably should have pulled out and not had six or seven children, possibly more. Oh well.

derxa · 21/09/2020 09:48

I think the salary is about right, when you compare with other nations: It really isn't.

Darker · 21/09/2020 10:40

I also think there should be far more sanctions for MPs who do not do their job, including the PM. It seems like people can do all sorts and get away with it.

Pedallleur · 21/09/2020 13:38

Given that he may/may not have been on a secret trip to Italy - he sems to be doing alright. Salaries are set I presume by Parliament so up to his colleagues/Hon members to give him a pay rise. But it's not about the salary is it? Candidates just want the job. They would do it for free.
