To wonder what the ‘sweeping new measures’ will be?

As covered widely in the media, Boris Johnson is now said to be considering ‘sweeping new measures’ for the whole UK, sooner rather than later. What do people think these will be? No mixing between households? Pubs closed at 10pm?

I predict schools will close from Oct half term until New Year, with only Y6, Y11 and Y13 doing 2 weeks rotas

My son's college started doing a week on, week off. They could go back to that quite easily, but my ds wouldn't be happy as they also blocked the timetable to avoid wasted time at college for the students, so the lessons are very long, which is hard enough face to face, but really unpleasant online, though they do get a short break.

Agree they need to tell people to work at home where at all possible and stop this nonsense about going back to the office to prop up Pret and the like.

I wouldn't care about a curfew as I am in bed by 10 generally anyway, but I am not sure how it works if eg you are working until 10. Would you need a letter from your employer giving you permission to be out? Feels very WW2 and a bit over the top.

cologne4711 · 19/09/2020 17:10

I went to the pub last night and wasn't asked for my details. There was a table of 9 people sitting together even though the rules say 6

Pubs that don't follow and enforce the rules need to be shut down. This is a nonsense and needs to stop.

Funkypolar · 19/09/2020 17:10

I’m not sure how they are going to pay for all this. Especially as unemployment rises.

cologne4711 · 19/09/2020 17:13

I think they will lockdown on all social things, so no more meeting anyone, no hobbies, no travelling, probably restrictions on eating out and shops closing, but still tell us to go to work. They will prioritise the economy over our mental health and family connections. We can work, but we wont be allowed to live

Sigh. Sounds horrible, but feasible. Although some hobbies are peoples' workplaces, like swimming pools, just one example. And there's really no risk in small groups meeting outside for a run or cycle. Maybe we will move back to where we were in June, but with schools open as far as they can be.

ineedaholidaynow · 19/09/2020 17:13

I agree that hospitality rules have to be stricter and enforceable, and if not followed the establishment has to close

MarshaBradyo · 19/09/2020 17:14

To be fair mass unemployment and losing your livelihood is fairly shit for your mh.

MarshaBradyo · 19/09/2020 17:14

And your family relationships

DDiva · 19/09/2020 17:24

I dont get why everyone thinks we'll lock down at half term. If a strict lockdown is required I would have thought the timing is crucial and wouldn't just be slotted into the existing half term as that's 'convenient ' .

Greatthumbsdown · 19/09/2020 17:24

I think no mixing with other households is likely, but what will this actually mean, I wonder? Not even outside? That's a sad thought.

Agree they won't close schools (yet).

Apparently government was genuinely considering this timing to minimise disruption to education - as reported a few days ago. But it already seems too far away.

They won’t lock down unless it looks like the nhs is going to be overwhelmed. They will just prepare for it. They need to prepare just in case.

They will do curfews like belgium, stop folks mixing, ask folks to work from home, but keep work places and schools open.

justanotherneighinparadise · 19/09/2020 17:29

It’s going to be no socialising and possibly curfews.

Pr1mr0se · 19/09/2020 17:29

If they're really thinking about a seroous second lockdown I think he and the rest of them have seriously lost the plot - the stats for infections/ deaths really don't seem to support that (well I don't work for the NHS but I doubt it warrents that).

ChelseaDaggers · 19/09/2020 17:30

Yes, I agree tbh. I get why they don't want city centres to die a death, but people travelling into central London, as they do from where I live, is a long way to go with much shared space between passengers on trains and at all the stations along the line.

Greatthumbsdown · 19/09/2020 17:30

What does no socialising mean? No meeting other people at all, even outdoors?
OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 19/09/2020 17:33

Curfews are actually very successful in the countries they have been implemented in. People go out much less when they know they need to be back by a certain time.

No socialising will likely stay in small bubbles due to kids needing to go to school, parents needing to go to work, and child care requirements,

tapdancingmum · 19/09/2020 17:33

I received a poster of what to do if a child should show symptom and since going back to preschool I'm on my second flowchart and we've only been open two weeks! Anyway, this new list mentioned shielding so I think that's coming back. I've heard rumours of a two week shutdown around October half term but nothing definite.

midgebabe · 19/09/2020 17:34

They are not worried about the stats today, they are worried by the trend and what that will mean is inevitable in 2 weeks time , and then thinking that if they don't do anything, weeks 3 and 4 will be even worse.

27 dead today, 50 a day this time next week? 100 a day in 2 weeks time ? back to 1000 a day by the end of October unless something changes

And at the first stress the test and trace system has fallen apart

DH just said this to me^^. Like just a few minutes ago. Are you my DH..Wink?

Steamfan · 19/09/2020 17:37

I'm in the Wirral, one of the hot spots with new rules. Residents are no longer allowed to socialise with other people in private homes or gardens. This includes visiting family members who do not live with you or are not part of your support bubble. But I can go down the pub, and meet up with anyone I like, and this is because (don't laugh) "This is because the hospitality industry has enhanced measures, such as risk assessments and test and trace, which private homes don’t have." What utter bullshit. There are two pubs near us, which have been packed out on several occasions, and I really can't believe that all the punters filled in a form to say who they are and where they live. Utter nonsense

midgebabe · 19/09/2020 17:37

The harshness of the restrictions will depend upon how well people stick to them

If everyone could be guaranteed to self isolate if needed, keep 2 m apart, minimise social groups, then you might need virtually no new restrictions .

But if people are not doing that on average then you need to get those who will to go further

SantaClaritaDiet · 19/09/2020 17:42

They need to start imposing heavy fines, otherwise no restriction makes any sense.

People are already planning Halloween trick-or-treat and parties FFS! Mind blowing. These are the same parents who will be outraged if schools had to close again.

Heavy fines with "lighter" restrictions would be a lot better than a 2nd lockdown or near lockdown. The bad weather is coming, despite what people say, they won't be outside at all, and groups will start meeting indoors, kids have playdates..

Greatthumbsdown · 19/09/2020 17:43

Yes this seems correct - they see predictions, graphs/forecasts of where things are heading. And it's obviously not looking good at all.

Ridiculous.

I don't have a problem with curfews ( I am in bed by 9.30) but I do think they need to be paired with financial support for people whose jobs might be affected by the "early" closures.
