To wonder what the ‘sweeping new measures’ will be?

As covered widely in the media, Boris Johnson is now said to be considering ‘sweeping new measures’ for the whole UK, sooner rather than later. What do people think these will be? No mixing between households? Pubs closed at 10pm?

There is more social distancing in gyms & studio classes than at pubs at restaurants. Gyms are very quiet still and lots of equipment has been removed or marked out of use. In studios there are marks on the floor and you stay on your mark.
Many people are not using showers or changing rooms and some gyms have them closed still.

MintyMabel · 19/09/2020 18:50

We'd have been better off just investing all that money in the NHS to get the capacity for this.

Yep. Much better to have accepted the death of half a million people to save some money.

@PuzzledObserver

Can anyone remind me of the point of masks if cases are now rising as quickly as they were in Feb before we had to wear them?

They aren’t. Before lockdown, the number of cases was doubling every 3-4 days, now it’s 7-8 days. The difference being SD, sanitising and masks, plus limits on the size of gatherings.

That was in March. I said February.
Flittingaboutagain · 19/09/2020 18:52

The problem is masks are not being worn in pubs, restaurants or schools and these infected people then go home and spread it amongst families.

TheBeatGoesOn · 19/09/2020 18:53

I wish people would stop saying 'All the vulnerable should stay in so we can carry on with life.' Many of the vulnerable still need to work and are not frail, old pensioners like people assume when they hear that word.
I am guessing the sweeping measures will be

  1. No household mixing
  2. Essential travel only
  3. Curfew at 10PM

Doubt it will go further than that.

Dustballs · 19/09/2020 18:56

There’s nothing that will solve this now is there?

Government must know this.

BKCRMP · 19/09/2020 18:56

I think life will just end up go to work/school only.

ChelseaDaggers · 19/09/2020 18:57

Yes, I also think that @TheBeatGoesOn.

However, at the gym I go to, the classes are full of people who appear to be elderly and not exactly fighting fit! It's their choice and good for them for staying active, but I'm always thinking "oh god please don't catch it" when old frank cheerily greets me at yoga, then again at body pump, then body attack...and so on! But maybe that's massively patronising of me.

TableFlowerss · 19/09/2020 18:58

@Sunflowergirl1

Waste of time. We can't keep getting locked down. Only 10 weeks since we were released last time. The only realistic option is the Swedish approach as even if the vaccine works it will be 12 months before any number of people have had it
Here here!

What do you mean? There are certainly things we can do to change the chances of transmission... but yes every measure has to be balanced with the effect it will have.

Yes. Part of me thinks this won’t be too bad in winter generally. But Christmas? Sad
OP posts:
WiseUpJanetWeiss · 19/09/2020 19:00

No, but given it wasn’t overwhelmed last time why would it be this time?

Because it will be winter, and this time there appear to be no real plans to reduce mass contact between people, if schools, universities and “non essential” workplaces remain open.

The NHS was so very nearly overwhelmed last time, and the staff are already exhausted with it all.

According to the BMJ, there's a lot more cross-immunity than was previously thought so in some areas we're at the levels required for herd immunity.
MadameBlobby · 19/09/2020 19:09

That’s interesting @ThatLibraryMiss. Where I live and in most neighbouring areas we have rising cases and local restrictions. One neighbouring area has hardly any cases but they had the highest number of deaths in Scotland I think back in March. Makes you wonder

Mostly ignored I hope. How much more random crap can he come up with.
lockeddownandcrazy · 19/09/2020 19:17

Maybe - shock horror - they will enforce the rules like masks and social distancing with no excuses and no mass gatherings allowed even if they have the excuse of being a so called protest rally.

Thewiseoneincognito · 19/09/2020 19:20

I think we’re about to find out that ignoring this or pretending it’s not a major deal is going to cause longer term misery for many. Do we lockdown? Don’t we lockdown? What’s everyone else doing in the world? Will it mutate during the autumn winter months?

Pubs should be shut immediately whether we lockdown or not. Alcohol does not make for good perception and self awareness.

Staffy1 · 19/09/2020 19:22

I imagine the changes will be anything recreational closing, hospitals just about closing to everything but Covid (have they even really reopened? Most of the appointments are still be telephone). But they will still be insisting everyone returns to their offices by teleporting there as they will be discouraged from using public transport and that schools stay open, which really makes any other closures a bit pointless.

ninja · 19/09/2020 19:33

For those of you questioning that they might stop all socialising even outdoors ...

That's the rules where I am and has been for the last few weeks - and yes it's pretty shit especially for the kids and no most people are ignoring it

ReallySpicyCurry · 19/09/2020 19:35

I really disagree with curfews. What's the point in them? Just close pubs earlier surely. I don't think telling people when they can and can't go outside is acceptable in a democracy frankly. Even the once daily lockdown exercise wasn't law afaik. I was happy to abide by it because I felt it was a fair request, but an actual curfew is a different matter.

I go for a run between 9 and 10 at night and I meet and see nobody except the occasional other runner. How is that going to impact the spread of covid in any way? My grandad is an insomniac who sometimes goes out for midnight/moonlit walks around his area. No harm done

I just have an absolute gut abhorrence at the idea of penalising people for stepping out into the world, the air, the outdoors, whenever they please. It's just population control

shittingthreeeyedraven · 19/09/2020 19:41

@ReallySpicyCurry

This is just fucking bullshit now isn't it.

I don't know what this country is becoming

I'll be making my own risk assessments in the event of a second lockdown

And this is why we are facing rising case and potential rolling lockdowns. The view that people are somehow more special and can make their own judgements. And what about the people you affect with your attitude?
GameSetMatch · 19/09/2020 19:42

I think the problem is confusion, my PIL are in Lockdown they live 8miles away, we aren’t in lockdown but we use the same supermarket, parks and busses/trams none of us are sure what we are meant to be doing apart from not going to the pub after 11 which we don’t do anyway, and not meeting up.

Dustballs · 19/09/2020 19:45

When I say ‘nothing can be done’ OP - I mean I think we’ve exhausted the one opportunity we had to get some control of this situation. That was our first lockdown. We will never have the finances or trust from the population to have such an effective lock down again.

Where I live chaos ensues. No measures are taken seriously.

I just think government has lost control. The virus is soon to be out of control. I can’t see how anything can now be done to prevent many deaths and much sickness from occurring.

Parker231 · 19/09/2020 19:46

The spread would slow down and the restrictions be lifted if everyone stuck to the six people group limit, social distancing, mask wearing and hand washing. Too many people are ignoring the regulations so things will have to get tougher.

tillyandmilly · 19/09/2020 19:47

lockdown is coming folks.
