To wonder what the ‘sweeping new measures’ will be?

As covered widely in the media, Boris Johnson is now said to be considering ‘sweeping new measures’ for the whole UK, sooner rather than later. What do people think these will be? No mixing between households? Pubs closed at 10pm?

Scotland has 350 cases today. They had cases in single digit in mid august

The First Minister said coronavirus “could get out of our grip again” as Scotland faces the risk of “exponential growth” of Covid-19.

She said this weekend will be “critical” to how the Government plots a way forward, and added she wanted to give the nation “advanced notice” that the “coming days are likely to see some hard but necessary decisions”.

@Purplespup16 I really hope schools aren't closed from half term to new year Sad

Agree with those who say lockdown at half term seems too late - it's the end of October! God knows where we'll be by then.

Might be bollocks of course, but they say here they aren't closing schools or workplaces. Maybe hospitality venues... which are workplaces for some, but you know.

littlemsattitude · 19/09/2020 16:43

@Purplespup16

I predict schools will close from Oct half term until New Year, with only Y6, Y11 and Y13 doing 2 weeks rotas.

Those who weren’t shielded but classed as vulnerable will be part of shielding this time around to reduce them not only getting super ill from Covid, but reduce the chances of them picking up seasonal flu.

They won’t want to close businesses again but will impose a limit of people within a premise so we’ll see queues outside of grocery stores again. Restaurants and cafe’s will be takeaway/delivery only again.

If they do that they they must must must change a levels and GCSEs to the CAGs with no algorithm.
Fruitsaladjelly · 19/09/2020 16:47

lockdown would be idiotic, although it flattened the curve it has now become clear in will result in more excess non covid deaths than in prevented covid deaths. Doing the same thing again and expecting a different result would be lunacy.
Lock down would purely be a Pandering to public opinion move.
Therefore expect lockdown

greengreengrass14 · 19/09/2020 16:48

I can't get my head around it all. Won't go in.

I'm just expecting schools will close down any day if there is a case (in the 'bubble' that is secondary for two weeks, so have prepared for that and DD in her GCSE year to do work online.

I have just listened to the virtual 'parents evening' from our school. I found it very disturbing as it was delivered in the form of a 'lecture' and 'talking at' parents, despite the 'spin' about cooperation with parents etc.

The last one we had at the end of summer at least allowed for parents to raise questions and answered were shared with the online audience - i.e. all parents, which was helpful because other parents were asking questions that it was helpful to hear the answers to, i.e. practical things like 'do I need to wash the blazer every day' etc.

This one just rubbed me up the wrong way as there was no opportunity to share answers to questions with other parents, and it did zilch for managing anxiety at my end, and was not reassuring, so I've asked for a meeting and intend to collect questions of my own to clarity. Might start a seperate thread for those with kids of GCSE age...as realise the situation is different in primary schools etc

SqidgeBum · 19/09/2020 16:48

I think they will lockdown on all social things, so no more meeting anyone, no hobbies, no travelling, probably restrictions on eating out and shops closing, but still tell us to go to work. They will prioritise the economy over our mental health and family connections. We can work, but we wont be allowed to live

Echobelly · 19/09/2020 16:49

I think they'll cut down business hours and keep schools open, which will achieve naff all.

Thedogscollar · 19/09/2020 16:49

My hospital trusts ITU department have had a meeting re plans for the second wave. They are definitely expecting it again. The R rate is rising and along with the usual strains on the NHS at Winter this government must realise that it just will not be able to cope.
I really think a second lockdown could be comingSad

greengreengrass14 · 19/09/2020 16:50

oh dear Sqidgebum can't help feeling you are right...

PoloNeckKnickers · 19/09/2020 16:51

I really cannot see schools being closed. Having said that, we're being signed up to all kinds of online learning platforms and now setting homework online (Primary) just in case.

Hercwasonaroll · 19/09/2020 16:51

There is a thread on here about laptops and teachers are saying they have been told by DfE to prepare online only learning from end of September in case schools have to shut.

This was in the back to school guidelines in August to be fair.

I predict them keeping a V close eye on hospital admissions and death rates. Germany are seeing cases rise but death rates fall. Current UK death rate is below 5year average for the past 2 weeks.

Prig · 19/09/2020 16:52

Another lockdown.

480Widdio · 19/09/2020 16:54

If they go into total lockdown there will be little compliance, the Government has little support now.

A small shop in a lockdown area this morning had a notice on the door,2 customers only,There were 8 inside, only 2 were wearing a mask.

rwalker · 19/09/2020 16:57

A waste of time thats what they will be, unless you eradicate the virus of course it will come back.

Funguy · 19/09/2020 16:58

'There is a thread on here about laptops and teachers are saying they have been told by DfE to prepare online only learning from end of September in case schools have to shut'.

There may be a thread but NO we have not been told that. Me and Him both work in Education. What we have been told is to train for blended learning. In the case of my College this was very sketchy, but I have a brain and a laptop so I will go figure.

Goingdooolally · 19/09/2020 16:58

I’m a teacher and we’ve been told nothing!

MarshaBradyo · 19/09/2020 17:00

Pubs close at 10 and everyone go home

If anything

TooManyDogsandChildren · 19/09/2020 17:00

From news reports it is clear a number of schools in London Borough of Redbridge have closures due to Coronavirus and I hear from friends that parents are starting to pull their children out of school. This is in a climate where the local MP has tweeted that no CV testing is available. Schools in Redbridge take children from a very wide catchment area.

TBH I don't think keeping schools open is going to be viable for long and I have a year 13 DC.

Hercwasonaroll · 19/09/2020 17:01

Schools were told in the guidance to have a programme of online learning ready in the case of local/national lockdown. They are also supposed to be providing work to isolating students.

cosmo30 · 19/09/2020 17:01

Not a chance they will shut schools again. They will shut everything else to keep schools open and people in work first.

BogRollBOGOF · 19/09/2020 17:01

If the first lockdown for 6 weeks and an incredibly slow and painful unwinding of restrictions in the naturally advantageous spring/ summer hasn't solved the problem then what the fuck are "tough sweeping measures" supposed to actually achieve in any meaningful, long term way?

We can not afford to go the whole hog and it will cripple the country causing far more harm than good much longer term.

It's just desperation to appear to do something.

MJMG2015 · 19/09/2020 17:01

I think 'meeting in public' helps to remind people to be socially distant- to a degree. Inside your home it's much easier to forget yourself with family & friends.

Lots of rules could make life more pleasant, but people wouldn't bother to read & understand them, so they have to make rules that are more easily understood, even if they're less well received.

Then you can thank the idiots having parties & people not socially distancing in pubs/restaurants etc.

The virus spreads between people, people shouldn't need to be given 'laws' before they'll behave sensibly, but sadly that seems necessary.

The Govt bent under pressure to open too much at the same time. Madness.

They know where transmission is happening, they need to take action re those specific activities

If they want to keep schools open, they're going to have to hugely ramp up the supply of tests and STOP blaming parents/schools for needing tests!! Our school (private & largely boarding) has just announced they're going to use the Halo Testing (spit test - couriered to a lab) to minimise disruption & free up NHS tests. It's unclear so far if parents will be paying for individual tests or if the school will (and just add it to the annual fees). I expect most parents would prefer the second option & the school too.

They need to encourage people to WFH where possible and generally socialise as infrequently As possible

There's so much they've fucked up. they need to get this right, and people need to realise that they still need to play their part.

*people pass the virus on. It can't transmit itself'

Hobnobswantshernameback · 19/09/2020 17:02

I hate this "my local itu is planning for the second wave" scaremongering
Of course they fucking are
All hospitals have contingency plans for winter pressures, increased Covid cases and a million other scenarios
They've been on a rolling programme of planning since the spring
They haven't just woken up this week and looked at the newspapers and thought "ooh I know what we should do"
They've been radically altering how we work for months
I hate these posters who think they know something oh so top secret
Fucking dementors

PimlicoJo · 19/09/2020 17:04

They need to ensure the rules currently in place are followed rather than introduce more measures which people just ignore. I'm currently on a bus with 15 people on board. 5 aren't wearing masks at all and two lads are standing chatting with their masks around their chins. I went to the pub last night and wasn't asked for my details. There was a table of 9 people sitting together even though the rules say 6.

In contrast I'm just back from holiday in a European country where masks are mandatory, including for children. On the spot fines for not wearing them. Everyone was.

We're a joke - our government has lost the plot.
