To wonder what the ‘sweeping new measures’ will be?

As covered widely in the media, Boris Johnson is now said to be considering ‘sweeping new measures’ for the whole UK, sooner rather than later. What do people think these will be? No mixing between households? Pubs closed at 10pm?

He can piss off before he starts sanctioning areas in Scotland where schools have been open a month and we barely have any cases.

BoJo hasn't managed the areas in England with high levels, so its spread. Its about time he focused in those areas and left the rest if us alone.

PTW1234 · 19/09/2020 16:11

@MadameBlobby isn’t that exactly what they are doing? Hence why they are looking at new measures...

It’s is spreading exponentially, anyone with a calculator can work out how many people will likely be infected by this time next month. Even the ONS random testing figures are showing this now, you don’t put preventative measures in place after the event..

middleager · 19/09/2020 16:12

It's all rumour and conjecture. For example, I have heard from somebody who works wit the DfE that they won't close schools, yet others are saying they've heard teachers saying they've been told to prepare.
I still don't get why this is a knee jerk reaction and wasn't prepared for. Govt knew it was coming.

I'm feeling disollusioned as by me in local lockdown some are complying but many are still mixing with other households. The Govt can try to lock down but theycan't guarantee compliance.

Chchchchangesarecoming · 19/09/2020 16:13

I would imagine locking down everything but offices, schools and shops. The beauty and hospitality industries would be fucked though so many not?

MotherOfDragonite · 19/09/2020 16:13

@sueelleker

Telling us to use our own judgement; and look how well that worked last time!
But we're also not allowed to use our own judgement when it comes to taking our kids out of school -- we'll get fined for using our own judgement in that case!

Disillusioned

Zilla1 · 19/09/2020 16:14

Time-limited austere circuit breaker with extended half-term?

Somethingkindaoooo · 19/09/2020 16:15

@OhTheRoses

We had a hard lockdown in March but no masks and still shopped for groceries. It went on and on and there was little immunity build-up. We now have three mechanisms to treat the virus in those who are very unwell. The majority of people will not be very unwell.

Continue with masks
Continue with social distancing
Keep schools and universities open
Keep shops open
Keep workplaces open
Step up cleanliness
Stop households mixing indoors except for registered support bubbles
Rule of six outside
Curfew bars and restaurants
Keep theatres, stadiums, cinemas closed, nightclubs closed
Query gyms
Only essential foreign travel and quarantine/testing
Vulnerable shielding continues if those people wish
Sort out the testing fiasco
Consider anti-body testing

I can't see how it's in anyone's best interest to lock down again. I would only contemplate a lockdown if the NHS gets overwhelmed.

I think this too.
midgebabe · 19/09/2020 16:17

So you want to wait until the nhs is actually overwhelmed before taking action?

Nice...

MadameBlobby · 19/09/2020 16:17

Can anyone remind me of the point of masks if cases are now rising as quickly as they were in Feb before we had to wear them?

middleager · 19/09/2020 16:19

Football needs to be on the list. I see some fans watched a match today and there's pressure from clubs for fans to return.

goose1964 · 19/09/2020 16:19

It doesn't matter, people like the superspreader in Bolton won't follow it and no doubt it won't apply to people who have staff is cleaners, nannies etc And MPs will just carry on doing as little work for more money.

MadameBlobby · 19/09/2020 16:19

No, but given it wasn’t overwhelmed last time why would it be this time?

Tbh I am getting to the stage I’m past caring. It’s not my job to worry about this. I’ve kept my part of the bargain by sticking to every rule and this shower of shit in government can’t even get the basics right.

raspberrydream · 19/09/2020 16:19

I think to keep the schools open we need to go back to work from home

Sorry stadiums are on the list
Leafbeans · 19/09/2020 16:19

What they should do is bring back the mandatory shielding so that people who are at risk are not having to go out to work. I don't know why it was paused to be honest.

£££ and also it's not really fair. I agree that another lockdown isn't fair either, but the government should have been using the time to put an adequate testing service in place, amongst other measures to avoid the need for another one, yet to make it safer for those who are vulnerable to be able to get a semblance of freedom back. As they haven't, they will be used as the excuse which isn't fair.

petingo · 19/09/2020 16:19

I told my MP at the start of this that we are being led by a troupe of clowns.I have witnessed nothing in the meantime to make me change my mind.Making it up as they go along, they do not have a clue, just like everything else they do.
In the end,we cannot trash the economy, because if we have no economy,we have no society,no NHS,NOTHING.

So the government look like they're taking action. That's it.
hopeishere · 19/09/2020 16:22

@bluebeck

I do hope that if they shut hospitality venues, they provide furlough for those staff.

What they should do is bring back the mandatory shielding so that people who are at risk are not having to go out to work. I don't know why it was paused to be honest.

Shielding was never mandatory. It was advised but it was up to the individual.
ReallySpicyCurry · 19/09/2020 16:23

This is just fucking bullshit now isn't it.

I don't know what this country is becoming

I'll be making my own risk assessments in the event of a second lockdown

reluctantbrit · 19/09/2020 16:26

Do you know anyone who shield? We have two friends, both families with children (range of 12-5 and 12/7). It was a nightmare for them, the children really suffered mentally being coped in for months.

It wasn't just the over 70 who were told to shield, these were active people in their 40s, just with an underlying health problem. Luckily all familiy members could work from home, otherwise it would have been a disaster financially even with furlough.

Shielding was also never mandatory.

littlemsattitude · 19/09/2020 16:28

Lockdown like before except we will all have to go to work and school.

Aworldofmyown · 19/09/2020 16:32

We won't have another full on lockdown. Its impossible, the country can't afford it. It will be a case of nothing fun happening at all.
Go to school/work come home. Only outside with family you live with etc etc

Southwest12 · 19/09/2020 16:36

I think they are planning a two week hard lockdown at the end of October. The local lockdowns are a bit wishy washy in places, we go into one on Tuesday and while my friends can't come and sit in the garden we can all still meet up for dinner, as COVID is scared of tills! It's no mixing in private houses and gardens and all pubs, restaurants etc to shut at 10pm.

Purplespup16 · 19/09/2020 16:38

I predict schools will close from Oct half term until New Year, with only Y6, Y11 and Y13 doing 2 weeks rotas.

Those who weren’t shielded but classed as vulnerable will be part of shielding this time around to reduce them not only getting super ill from Covid, but reduce the chances of them picking up seasonal flu.

They won’t want to close businesses again but will impose a limit of people within a premise so we’ll see queues outside of grocery stores again. Restaurants and cafe’s will be takeaway/delivery only again.
