horrible mouth ulcers

coffeelover3 · 18/09/2020 09:45

Anyone any cures for mouth ulcers? I have about 3 on the tip of my tongue, and then big ones on the sides of my tongue, 4 under my tongue and 2 clusters on my lower lip - inside. Kept waking me up in the night it's stinging so much. I've been putting bonjela on them, and doing a corsydol mouthwash, but in agony. At work all day today and I cant talk properly! TIA

I found switching to a toothpaste without Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) helped reduced how many ulcers I got. The Dentitex range in Aldi is cheap and doesn't contain SLS. Most mainstream brands do contain it - it's used to make the pastes more 'foamy' when you use them - so the Aldi brand feels a bit different to use compared to ones I used before.

Salt dissolved in warm water really helps. I find that actually works better and faster than most OTC medicines.

LonelyFromCorona · 18/09/2020 09:48

Also based on your name - coffee is not helpful. It's acidic.

coffeelover3 · 18/09/2020 09:49

thanks I'll see if I can find some salt here in work. It's actually distracting me from working its really agony today my whole mouth feels like it's on fire!

Pop and have a chat with a pharmacist it could be something more than just mouth ulcers. Do you also get cold sores at all?

Clymene · 18/09/2020 09:50

Have you tried a vitamin B supplement?

SerenDippitty · 18/09/2020 09:53

Mouth ulcers may be caused by iron or B12 deficiencies - maybe Roth getting your levels checked? Hope you feel better soon.

user1493494961 · 18/09/2020 09:58

I would also recommended a warm salt mouthwash.

coffeelover3 · 18/09/2020 10:07

thanks everyone. yes I started taking B vitamins. I think I do it in my sleep - I suck the life out of my tongue and cheeks when I'm stressed. Cant get any relief today though. Cant wait to get home to do the salt water thing.

Styptic pencil - the type for stopping shaving cuts from bleeding - can help. Takes the sting out for a while, repeat as necessary. Tastes nasty though.

LittleSwede · 18/09/2020 10:15

Difflam mouth gargle. Had to go to GP last year as had such awful mouth ulcers. Cleared within a couple of days. Also gargled with salt water and tried clove oil but the Difflam numbed it nicely.

WonderTweek · 18/09/2020 10:19

I put clove oil on mine if I'm desperate. It absolutely canes for a few seconds but then it's all numb for a bit. It doesn't last very long though so only a temporary relief.

Mouth ulcers suck. I hope you find relief soon!

emptyshelvesagain · 18/09/2020 10:19

I use anbesol which sting like a bastard when you apply it but numbs in seconds and works like magic.

Happyheartlovelife · 18/09/2020 10:20

I used to have horrific mouth ulcers as a child.

I used anbesol. (Can never spell it!)

I use it even to this day. But it's amazing.

Absolutely this. A revelation! Also try iglu gel for the immediate pain
WonderTweek · 18/09/2020 10:21

@emptyshelvesagain Ooh I think I meant Anbesol instead of clove oil. It stings so much but the numbness is fabulous.

CodenameVillanelle · 18/09/2020 10:21

I use a sensodyne paste that doesn't have SLS in

HoneysuckIejasmine · 18/09/2020 10:24

Gosh, that's quite extreme. I usually have one or two ulcers pretty much constantly (I have an autoimmune disease) and your post has alarmed me. I would be seeing a doctor, this could be a sign of something wrong.

Iglu is a great treatment but it really is like glue so I only use it overnight as it's hard to talk depending on where the ulcer is.
Bonjela next to useless.
Corsodyl very good but overwhelms your sense of taste and can stain your teeth - my hygienist told me off about it last time. She did recommend an alternative but I can't remember what it was.

monkeyonthetable · 18/09/2020 10:26

I second switching to a toothpaste without Sodium Laurel sulphate (Quite hard to find but most of the Oral B range are SLS free.

Also, cut out bananas for a while.

And take B vitamin supplements.

DS had them all the time. Now never has them, though they come back if he forgets and eats banana or we run out of Oral B.

coffeelover3 · 18/09/2020 11:24

just asked the coffee shop very nicely if they had any salt and the nice lady gave me some packets - managed to get some warm water - relief was amazing, but it's back stinging again now. cant talk properly so am just saying 'um, and mm hm' a lot in work! watching the clock so I can go and do the hot water thing again. thanks for listening to my moaning. it's nice to have 'someone to tell' don't want to tell the girl in work she might be grossed out. went to boots this morning on the way in but they didn't have anything. will get toothpaste on way home and the difflam. hopefully they are 'peaking' today and will get better now. 'they've been getting worse since they appeared on Tuesday.

PS definitely something 'off' with my taste buds as the salt water tasted sweet to me!!!!!

Peroxyl mouthwash to reduce infection. And denture fixative paste dabbed thinly over their surface ( use a cotton wool bud) to make it easier to eat, drink and speak. The fixative glues your mouth a bit but it acts like a second skin. There used to be a product that formed a thin skin over ulcers but I’m not sure if it’s still available.
Don’t use bonjela. It works by numbing the are but also contains a small amount of salycilate (aspirin like drug) as an analgesic which with prolonged use can burn the tissues.

UnaCorda · 18/09/2020 11:33

Bonjela is useless, but there are much better topical treatments out there. I'm afraid I can't remember the name of the one I used that was quite effective, but I'd go to a pharmacy and see what they can offer.

Angrymum22 · 18/09/2020 11:35

Iglu gel is the product that forms a protective coat, numbs it and disinfects at the same time.

k1233 · 18/09/2020 11:50

I get the most hideous ulcerated throat - the first time I got it I swelled from my chin to my collar bones, lost all hint of a neck. One of my godsends is Strepsil throat lozenges with anaesthetic. You can get difflam version too, but I find Strepsil better. Really helps and lasts a while.
