To call my baby this

So we decided this name in September 2017. We had been trying for a baby for a while and knew this would be our girl name when we eventually fell pregnant.

Anyway, we have since found out we are having a baby girl and I am due very soon.

We decided to call her Cove.

But now I'm worrying that it's too close to Covid, especially since she will be born during the pandemic.

I'm not too worried about people liking the name personally, but more worried about whether she'll be teased in future because of its association with Covid? Am I over thinking?

I think Cove is ok but I don't think you should use it now. Even if 5 year olds don't remember Covid 19 their parents will.

Would you consider calling her Cleo? I think that's a lovely name. Both pretty and strong.

I cannot imagine going through life having to tell people that my name is Cove Cleopatra. Seriously, can you? Can you really imagine that name on a real life girl? A teenager, a middle aged woman, a little old lady?

ImNotBusyImLazy · 12/09/2020 09:13

Covid aside, it's just a horrible name. I realize you love it, but you must have blinders on. It's not a nice name at all. I feel bad typing this, but I think you need to hear it!

PinkiOcelot · 12/09/2020 09:15

It’s a bad choice of name full stop regardless of Covid. You’d seriously think of saddling your child with that?!!

Stephenfrylust · 12/09/2020 09:15

I think it's a pretty name but now too similar to covid. It makes me think of a quiet secluded beach. The names don't always sound as good when you put them in real life e.g. shouting it in the park or thinking about school register.

If you like beach/ marine names you could try

Coral
Ocean
Atlanta
Drift
Shale

I think there are lots of sort of cosy sounding words associated with the sea even of the meaning isn't particularly pretty. I would be tempted to go with them as a middle name though.

@Purplecatshopaholic

The baby names threads are often bonkers, so I was willing to go with the first name as potentially genuine - if nothing short of cruel - until I saw the second name. I hope you are kidding. I am going to assume you are, and thank you for the laugh. And by the way ‘we’ are not pregnant - you are - if indeed you are...
I'm not at all surprised that someone entertaining 'Cove Cleopatra' as a name, also uses 'we' when talking about the state of pregnancy . . . Hmm
TellingBone · 12/09/2020 09:16

I'm intrigued as to the personal reasons for choosing Cleopatra.

Aversion to asps? Fan of short-lived girl groups? Caesar fetish?

oakleaffy · 12/09/2020 09:16

@Pinkyandthebrainz

Please don't call your baby Cove.
Or Cleopatra.

My DH wanted to call DS a name I can't even write...and DS is an adult now, and when I told him, he exhaled like a kettle on full steam and said ''Thank Goodness he didn't call me THAT''

Children really ought not to be lumbered with a name they can't change.

Cleo is a sweet name, but 'Cleopatra' sounds a bit laborious.

WhoAmIWhoAreYou · 12/09/2020 09:18

I personally wouldn't.

Maybe likes needles? Or obelisks? {Cleopatra's Needle}
tornadoalley · 12/09/2020 09:18

It's awful anyway and in the pandemic would raise some eyebrows

Thenneverendingstorohree · 12/09/2020 09:19

I really don't think it's a good idea and I'm not at all conservative about names.

Planesmistakenforstars · 12/09/2020 09:19

Lucille Anchorage. For the love of God, you cannot be serious.

PinkPosyPetals · 12/09/2020 09:19

Similar to coven too, so witches and a pandemic.
I’d rethink

newtb · 12/09/2020 09:20

Also, cove is a word for a rather shady character sort of spiv.

Flappingflamingo · 12/09/2020 09:21

Just no, to both

PinkPosyPetals · 12/09/2020 09:21

Could have Clover, if you can live with some butter jokes.
Though I do like the name Clover..

Mischance · 12/09/2020 09:22

Assuming this is not a windup, is the OP aware that cove is a slang word for a man, usually used in a derogatory way, as in "He's a daft old cove"?
Why would you saddle a little girl with such a "name"?

TheChristmasPrincess · 12/09/2020 09:23

Coral
Bay
Marina

Please don’t use Cove Cleopatra on a real child! If you’re going to use Cleopatra at least tone it down to Cleo or Clea. This poor child is going to be a walking target for bullies.

PinkiOcelot · 12/09/2020 09:24

@PinkPosyPetals our rabbit is called Clover. It’s a good name for a rabbit.

donnadenise · 12/09/2020 09:25

Yes, too bad timing to use it now.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 12/09/2020 09:25

As a comparator, I know someone who called her son Cameron in 2015.

I remember privately thinking how awful, everyone would think of the PM etc. Of course, 18mos later he stood down, and now he's just a footnote but she has the name she wants.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 12/09/2020 09:25

What's wrong with witches? Hmmmm? Grin

But yeah. Cove is a pretty bad name. Don't do it OP.

Purpledaisychain · 12/09/2020 09:28

It is a nice name, just unfortunate timing. If you really like the name and still want to use it then go for it, but just be aware that people probably will link it to covid.
