AIBU?

To call my baby this

So we decided this name in September 2017. We had been trying for a baby for a while and knew this would be our girl name when we eventually fell pregnant.

Anyway, we have since found out we are having a baby girl and I am due very soon.

We decided to call her Cove.

But now I'm worrying that it's too close to Covid, especially since she will be born during the pandemic.

I'm not too worried about people liking the name personally, but more worried about whether she'll be teased in future because of its association with Covid? Am I over thinking?

Nope, I wouldn't

Plus in old fashioned books like p.g woodhouse a ' cove' was a dodgy man.

My first association wouldn’t be Covid, but ‘cove’ in the sense of ‘geezer’ — slightly old-fashioned (Cockney?) slang for ‘man’ eg ‘He’s an odd-looking cove’. Very Del Boy.

I assume your associations are with the coast and the sea (rather than the architectural meaning), but to me it would be like calling a baby Geezer.

No, she will be teased.

I’m hoping this is a joke. There’s so many lovely names for girls. It’s very try hard. Trying to be funny. Trying to be different.

Personally I wouldn't. Even if the kids dont pick up on it other people will, however it is totally your choice.

How about using it as her middle name, that way you still get to use it ?

X-post with @Prettybluepigeons saying similar.

Oh god no
Why would you
When there are all the beautiful girls names to choose from

She'll be teased because it's a ridiculous name, nothing to do with Covid.

That was my first thought, too.

Please don't call her Cove or Haven. Poor kid. Life is tough enough.

As you are asking for opinions

  1. it will absolutely be associated with Covid and would be seen as ignorant at best, offensive at worst
  2. are you aware that Cove is a slang word for a thief/criminal? It's very much a piratical slang - like something from Dickens or Treasure Island but still used in parts of the UK
  3. personally i think it's just not a very nice name, although I fully appreciate it's your choice
I can see Haven as a softer name with a similar meaning but I would just associate that with dodgy Holiday Parks!

Nah too similar to Covid. She'll get teased for sure.

@ladykuga My thoughts too - I love a bit of Angela Lansbury!

OP - I wouldn’t immediately have thought “Covid”, but now it is mentioned I can see why there would be an association. My main concern is that she’ll spend her life with people saying “No, what’s your proper name?” to her, as it sounds like a casual shortening of something else.

What about Haven . It has the same meaning and a similar soft sound .

This. Haven is beautiful and has a similar meaning.

I would definitely associate it with Covid. I just asked my DH what he thinks of the name Cove and his immediate response was "What's her middle name going to be - Id? Says it all, really.

Why not choose a different ocean-inspired name?

Athena
Bay
Brooke
Lana (Hawaiian for calm water)
Pearl

Isn’t Haven a chain of caravan parks in the UK, though?

Cove sounds like the name of a seafood restaurant.

My first thought was Gove, rather than Covid. Equally bad.
