AIBU?

To call my baby this

So we decided this name in September 2017. We had been trying for a baby for a while and knew this would be our girl name when we eventually fell pregnant.

Anyway, we have since found out we are having a baby girl and I am due very soon.

We decided to call her Cove.

But now I'm worrying that it's too close to Covid, especially since she will be born during the pandemic.

I'm not too worried about people liking the name personally, but more worried about whether she'll be teased in future because of its association with Covid? Am I over thinking?

You could call her Rona instead? Which is a actual name.

I didn't make the association with covid until you said it at the end of your post.

I think that once we have a vaccine it will quickly become a distant memory. Remembered by many but not often thought about.

Cove Cleopatra

Really?

Sounds like a name an attention-seeking reality show 'celebrity' would use.

Shaven Haven. Just no.

Nope don’t do it, too much like Covid and to really nail the hat on, also sounds like Gove Confused
Cleo is nice.

Cove rhymes with (Michael) Gove. That's enough for me without all the other stuff.

I won’t say what I think of the name as it’s clearly something you like and have thought about but it’s terrible timing for 2020 and will have an awful association forever. Don’t do it.

Cove is a word not a name surely. Please don’t.

Cove ! As in “a funny old cove ?” I think of it in the man sense before the small beach sense, so I was initially very confused. Then there is covid. Imagine her nineteenth birthday !
No. Just no.
And Cleopatra ! The only thing to say Is that it is better than Cove.

LizzieMacQueen · 12/09/2020 09:36

Cove is a place south of Aberdeen so it's definitely a name.

But for a wee girl, born in 2020, I'd not use it as their first name, middle perhaps.

Just read the Cleopatra bit. Please OP don’t do this. Your poor baby.

MomToTwoBabas · 12/09/2020 09:36

Of gosh yes for her whole life people will think she is named after covid don't be that cruel. Poor baby.

It means (Collins Dictionary)

  1. Word forms: plural coves

COUNTABLE NOUN
A cove is a part of a coast where the land curves inwards so that the sea is partly enclosed.
...a hillside overlooking Fairview Cove.

  1. 1. old-fashioned, slang, British and Australian

a fellow; chap
  1. Australian history

an overseer of convict labourers

Dreadful name, whatever made you think of it? She will not thank you for that.

OP didn’t ask for opinions on the name so I think all the comments about that are a bit unnecessary.

If this name is THE ONE and you can’t think of anything else you’d rather call her or any other contenders, you should just go for it.

I think you could get away without it forever being linked with the pandemic. For a start, it’s often referred to as coronavirus rather than covid. And it’s a name that conjures up sea / beach imagery first and foremost for many people.

You don’t sound too sure though so I’d maybe spend some time trying to find other names you like, maybe one of those will become your front runner over time.

I loved a certain name and wanted to use it for one of my children. For various reasons, it didn’t quite fit so we looked at other names and over time my attachment to the original name faded.

If you love it then yes, go for it. The Covid association might be stronger at the moment (I don't really think Cove = Covid anyway), but people won't be thinking about that in future.

It’s not a name. Don’t saddle your child with something she’ll have to repeat, explain, spell etc for the rest of her life.
(unless your American and it will be quite normal).

Cove is fine for a rabbit and at a lush a puppy but you expose a child to a life of ridicule.

Now I read Cleopatra and do this is clearly a piss take?

Looking for a slot in the daily mail or more likely a daily mail ‘journalist’ or by the word generator of click bait

@TellingBone

I'm intrigued as to the personal reasons for choosing Cleopatra.

Aversion to asps? Fan of short-lived girl groups? Caesar fetish?

Grandparent born in Egypt and has her first name as this. Meant a lot to her to have her name in her first great grandchild's name. I appreciate it's not a very modern common name, hence choosing if as a middle name.

I appreciate all the comments and glad I posted as vast majority think it's terrible and would assume this will be the same opinion as people around me!

Will definitely have to rethink Confused

@Purplecatshopaholic

The baby names threads are often bonkers, so I was willing to go with the first name as potentially genuine - if nothing short of cruel - until I saw the second name. I hope you are kidding. I am going to assume you are, and thank you for the laugh. And by the way ‘we’ are not pregnant - you are - if indeed you are...

I never said "we are pregnant", I said we were expecting our

Sorry, posted before I finished.

We are expecting our first baby girl, I think (may be mistaken) that this is not incorrect?

I am indeed pregnant, my partner is NOT, but I never said this.

Well if you are prepared to put up with pirate impressions "aye aye matey what a rum cove you are" etc, etc.

Go right ahead.

No, it's a daft name, pandemic or no pandemic.

Oh, I actually did say that, I apologise Blush I had originally said we are expecting and then didn't post it correctly and had to start again, anyway, back to the point Hmm
