AIBU?

To call my baby this

So we decided this name in September 2017. We had been trying for a baby for a while and knew this would be our girl name when we eventually fell pregnant.

Anyway, we have since found out we are having a baby girl and I am due very soon.

We decided to call her Cove.

But now I'm worrying that it's too close to Covid, especially since she will be born during the pandemic.

I'm not too worried about people liking the name personally, but more worried about whether she'll be teased in future because of its association with Covid? Am I over thinking?

OP posts:

I have to agree. It does propel me to 'Covid' a bit, but the fact that's it very Wodehousian - 'a queer cove' - is the bigger 'nah'.
I actually don't mind 'Haven' and my mind goes to 'safe haven' before 'Haven Holidays'. Probably because I'd never go on one in a million years so they don't really hit my radar.

COVID has done your child a favour, it seems...

Sorry, I agree with almost everyone else that it’s a really bad idea right now. Why not have Cleopatra (Cleo) as her first name if you love that?

It's a silly "name" anyway, but especially bad just now.

Cove Cleopatra??

Yeah, right.....
Nobody would call their baby that.
In case you are a genuine poster - please do not call her Cove Cleopatra.
She'll have years of telling people her name and them either spitting out their tea or trying (and failing) to keep a straight face.

Sorry op that’s an awful name, even without the covid association, but given the timing it’s almost cruel. Why would you saddle your kid with that at birth?

Why didnt you post this in Baby Names section? For a NC you would know that?

Might as well just call her Bully Me [LastName].

I’m afraid so.

This is a wind up surely?

With or without Covid it's not great. Doesn't sound like a name, and doesn't have a particularly nice sound. Feel like will be misheard over and over again, and people still not really "hearing" what the name is, and just nodding in agreement and finding anyway around having to repeat the name themselves. Like pp have said, the cockney associations would be enough to put me off, makes it really unusable for a girl, and not desirable for a boy.

The cove is a pub near me so that’s what I immediately thought of when I read it. I don’t believe the op is serious though. I do like Cleo. In fact I could think of a thousand names I would choose over Cove.

I immediately thought of the dodgy “geezer“ meaning, rather than the geographical meaning.
Even without the Covid element I’d steer clear of it as a name for either sex.
Why not Cleopatra as her first name? It’s a lot to carry off but Cleo is lovely for short.

It's also an old fashioned word for a man, usually a bit of a rogue. As in 'He is a rum cove'.

Bad timing, don't do it.

I've been trying to think of an alternative and came up with Beach, Cwm, also no good.

Cove?? That also means a man!
''He's rather a strange cove''

Not a good name...I thought more of an inlet rather than Covid...and also of the archaic term for a male.

We clearly read the same type of books!

It doesn't sound like a name to me, just a word. Unless it's a name in a different language, in which case I apologise.
Yeah, I would choose something different, like a real name. After all, there are thousands to choose from.

Cove? Like on a beach where you usually find graffiti, underage drinking and nefarious characters? Sounds great. Do it.

Cleopatra? Confused

Not my cup of tea at all but if you’re ok with names along those lines I think Coast could be a pretty cool name.

BabyLlamaZen · 12/09/2020 09:09

Well yes right now it would sound like a terrible joke. However, in 5 years time it's unlikely people are going to go "oh wait...was she born in covid times?" And count back. For example no one looks at an adult now and would think if their name is appropriate for the year they were born.
