Apparently there wasn't enough butter to make his sandwiches.

I'll attatch a photo, please do let me know what you think. I'm not taking him seriously, obviously.

When I said that there quite clearly is enough for two ham sandwiches he said "well I just like alot of butter" and chose to leave without any sandwiches at all and a face like a slapped arse.

I suspect he's got the ump about the fact that my DM had sandwiches here this afternoon and is blaming her for the lack of butter (I never use it)

So just for my amusement..

YABU - there isn't enough
YANBU - there's plenty

OP posts:
Flaxmeadow · 12/09/2020 05:39

did I miss the post in which OP says she does all this and her husband does none

No, that's why I used question marks in my post

Oysterbabe · 12/09/2020 05:40

He's correct you appear to be out of butter and just have a few dregs of disgusting margarine left 🤮
He could have used it on one slice and put Mayo on the other.

Potterpotterpotter · 12/09/2020 05:50

Whoever put that container back in the fridge is BU. It’s empty and should of went in the bin!

ChanceChanceChance · 12/09/2020 05:55

or make a ham and egg fritatta in the microwave Grin sure it would have gone down well if the op had suggested this!

fallfallfall · 12/09/2020 06:02

Artery clogging artificial sludge. YABU to own that crap. Totally unappetizing. I’d be pissed off as well.

KatherineJaneway · 12/09/2020 06:07

Nope, not enough for sandwiches there.

Doesn't everyone keep a spare tub of butter in the fridge when you see the first one getting a bit low? That way you never face buttergate?

Yes, margarine is disgusting.

noodlezoodle · 12/09/2020 06:20
  1. He is being unreasonable for being passive aggressive about butter instead of just telling you he's pissed off about it, like a grown up.
  2. No that is definitely not enough butter/margarine/generic spread for 2 sandwiches, but oh well, he's an adult, I'm sure he'll cope.
  3. I live in the US where there is no such thing as butter on sandwiches and people look generally appalled if you mention it. Your DP would not survive the week Grin
NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 12/09/2020 06:44

There isnt really plenty but theres enough. Does he really get in a huff about shit like that? It's so trivial. Unless there is a pattern where theres never any food left for him.

If not I'd be rather glad hes gone to work and taken his huff with him

chilling19 · 12/09/2020 06:46

Marge is unacceptable OP. Hamradio - using all the milk is death penalty status in this house - especially if I can't have my cup of tea in the morning. 😡

GreyShadow · 12/09/2020 06:48

@CardsforKittens

Is your DH frequently annoyed at your DM? Why isn’t he grateful to her for helping out? Seems like Buttergate is the thin end of the wedge.

This!!!

Bloody hell id be raging at him!

dentydown · 12/09/2020 07:08

If you use flat bottomed spatula you can get two slices worth out of that!

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 12/09/2020 07:13

Grin at all the butter snobs. The Op can eat what she wants.

How do you manage to spread butter out of the fridge without completely mutilating you bread? Or if you leave it out all the time, is that safe? I thought it should be stored in a fridge

Oysterbabe · 12/09/2020 07:17

There's no need to keep butter in the fridge, it's perfectly safe in a butter dish. I usually put half a block at a time in the butter dish and it's used up within a few days.

ReallySpicyCurry · 12/09/2020 07:21

Of course that's enough. I eat proper butter like cheese and even I think that's enough for a ham sandwich. Never heard such shit. I mean marge is evil anyway, but you could definitely spread over two slices with that. Is he one of those fucking lazy wasteful people who thinks there's "none left" if he has to scrape or squeeze in any way?

FinnyStory · 12/09/2020 07:26

It's probably not about the butter.

It always astounds me in these threads that people can o ly see a selfish lazy man having a tantrum.

What about a man who feels unloved generally, who's dreading going to work, who's worried about something else in his life? I've no idea which of these might apply in this case but IME adult (or teenage for that matter) "tantrums" are very rarely about the thing that appears to set them off.

nannybeach · 12/09/2020 07:29

My DH always had butter, me veg margarine, then I started eating butter, he will only eat one particular type of margarine. He likes if thickly slathered on, I can do without. I noticed a lot of the little sandwich shops don't use any kind of spread. Me, now, its got to be Olive Oil Margarine.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/09/2020 07:31

Butter is absolutely fine out of the fridge for a couple of weeks at least unless the weather is very hot. It's kind of the point of butter, to extend the useable life of milk, as well as being a nice and useful product. In any case, it will start to go rancid before it becomes unsafe. In very hot weather, just put a smaller amount out if you don't use it in a couple of days or so.

Totally baffled as to why people think butter can't be kept at room temperature. When did that become a thing? Growing up, people kept butter at room temperature so that's what I've always done when in my own house.

But back to the OP, that's sufficient for sandwiches and can always be augmented with mayonnaise or mustard if not. Sounds like the DH thinks the shopping fairy is slacking, but if he works in retail, why can't he get some at work, or at least make sure nothing runs out by shopping after work?

But OP, you are also being unreasonable by referring to something other than proper butter as butter. As you will be now aware, they're not the same and I hope you never offer NotButter to anyone by asking them if they want butter because it's hard work being vigilant to people telling this lie in food service establishments and having to have the 'is it actually butter or spread' conversation especially with people who will show you the tub of shitey catering margarine and still insist it is butter, Asda café woman, I am looking at you. Angry When I finally got through to her that I didn't want anything other than actual, made out of milk, butter, she claimed that was all they had and they had 'run out of butter' and it took all my strength to stop going off on a rant about the great fridge full of kilos of butter that was a few steps from where we were standing. Perhaps this was the same supermarket that the OPs DH works at?

roundtable · 12/09/2020 07:33

Apparently margarine is grey. They dye it yellow to make it look like butter. Team Butter here!

I can see why he's grumpy - probably more to do with going to work and things not being quite right if he's not normally like this? Or is he often grumpy? He could have got sandwiches out of it though - he's just being a martyr.

SwanShaped · 12/09/2020 07:35

No one needs two sandwiches for lunch. Agree about margarine being disgusting. Slimy. I can even imagine the sound and feel of the knife scraping against the bottom of the tub. Urgh.

Macramacious · 12/09/2020 07:38

I'm vegan so I use olive oil and a sprinkling of salt on sandwiches

MJMG2015 · 12/09/2020 07:38

@Yaottie

Nope there's plenty there!
For 4 slices of bread?

No, there's really not!

Anyway HIBU to eat that chemical compound. The man needs REAL butter

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 12/09/2020 07:40

Make a ham and egg fritatta only on mumsnet GrinHmm

MJMG2015 · 12/09/2020 07:42

@GoldfishParade

Also why are you solely responsible for ensuring theres enough butter in the house?
Well, if someone uses something for a guest that they don't normally use, how is the person who needs it for his work sandwiches supposed to know it's been used? There would have been enough last time he used it and as he normally has sole use of it, why would he keep checking it??
SuzieQQQ · 12/09/2020 07:43

Is he 4 or 40??

MJMG2015 · 12/09/2020 07:46

@FingersCrossedForAllOfUs

If you don’t eat it why is he getting the ump with you? I assume his little legs can take him to the shop can’t they?
We don't all live 2 mins walk from a corner shop and who factors in time to drive to the shops, every day before work, just in case some inconsiderate oaf uses up the food they know you'll need for your work lunch?
