To find the expression 'we are pregnant' ridiculous and irritating

dallaspalace · 11/09/2020 14:32

Under most circumstances there is only one person who is pregnant in a couple. Wishing this expression would disappear but instead I notice it's use becoming more and more common.

I understand that this may come from a good place as both parents want to share in the experience but growing a baby is quite an undertaking for the mum and I think this expression trivialises it a bit.

What's the general consensus?

It's DW is pregnant or we're going to be parents.

If only there was a choice to let the man get on with it, well there'd be less babies🤣

iolaus · 11/09/2020 21:22

WE are having a baby - fine
only one is pregnant (or they could make a lot of money)

iolaus · 11/09/2020 21:23

@oakleaffy

Even in a same sex couple, only one can be pregnant, though?
I did actually know a same sex couple who were both pregnant at the same time - only time a couple can say 'we are pregnant'
P999 · 11/09/2020 21:29

Do men really say 'we' had s c-section? Morning dickness? Pissing myself. How about being on your period?

P999 · 11/09/2020 21:30

Morning sickness. Although dickness seems pretty apt

ShebaShimmyShake · 11/09/2020 21:33

As Daphne Moon said when Niles was getting far too involved in her experience when she was expecting: "Stop acting pregnant. You're a man, for God's sake."

percheron67 · 11/09/2020 21:44

Would like to cancel "falling pregnant" as well.

P999 · 11/09/2020 21:45

I reckon if i were with someone who claimed he was also co-pregnant with me, i'd insist he go the whole hog. And tell everyone about our terrible piles and weeping nipples

P999 · 11/09/2020 21:47

Jeremy is suffering terribly with our new bazooka sized piles

AnotherEmma · 11/09/2020 21:49

🤣

Cheetahfajita · 11/09/2020 21:58

I hate it, I automatically think that they will have a lot of parenting books at home.

Burnthurst187 · 11/09/2020 22:14

I've always found it quite annoying tbh

Giespeace · 11/09/2020 22:28

We didn’t have horrendous sickness that lasted months. We didn’t have loose teeth and bleeding gums. We didn’t have SPD. We didn’t have a sore back. We didn’t have constipation. We didn’t labour in agony to give birth to our dead child. We certainly didn’t nearly die of multiple organ failure.
I did. I was pregnant. We were expecting a baby but at no point was DHs physical health and life on the line.

I am very sorry that was supposed to be Flowers

Cam2020 · 11/09/2020 22:37

YANBU. Cringeworthy and vom inducing.

Cam2020 · 11/09/2020 22:41

Yes please. Such a moronic phrase. Makes me think of those gormless looking actors on those compensation adverts: I was walking on my way to work when I slipped, tripped, landed on a dick and fell pregnant.

HappyBdayWilson · 11/09/2020 22:45

YANBU, it's a gross phrase.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 11/09/2020 23:29

Agreed and it’s always delivered in a smug way. Usually by someone who’s not been in the relationship very long or is very insecure about their relationship.

We’re expecting or we’re having a baby are both fine.

Viviennemary · 11/09/2020 23:33

I agree with cancelling falling pregnant. Or she's managed to get herself pregnant re 'irresponsible girl'. That was pretty miraculous then.

TinyTornado · 11/09/2020 23:42

YANBU A male colleague told me he was having a baby. Being a bit slow on the uptake I was convinced he was joking and made some wise ass remark about it being a physical impossibility.
He was quite offended as it turned out he meant his partner was pregnant and he took my comment as being an insult about his ability to procreate as opposed to him being pregnant as a man which what was meant.

Ameliablue · 11/09/2020 23:44

We are having a baby - yes
We are pregnant - no

PrincessMaryaBolkonskaya · 11/09/2020 23:45

Sorry haven’t rtft so don’t know if I’m the first to say this.

I saw on a thread earlier “we had a positive OPK”. I’m sorry what now?!?!?

Fucking hate it. Fucking hate “we’re pregnant”.

lioncitygirl · 11/09/2020 23:47

i never said stuff like that, but i know my husband said once to a mate 'we're having a baby' and it didnt irk me as much....

Cam2020 · 11/09/2020 23:51

I think that's fine because you are both going to have a baby at the end of it all, t's the specific pregnant thing that it irksome and horrific.
