To ask what you think about a British government openly declaring that it will break international law?

This is regarding Johnson’s government’s new stated dislike of the Withdrawal agreement, which Johnson turfed May out over, negotiated, and signed.

For those not watching the news (living under rocks as it’s the top headline), the new Internal Market Bill they are presenting has a clause to the effect that any international law or court can be ignored at will. There are severe repercussions for the GFA and NI. The government have openly confirmed they will break the Withdrawal Agreement and any international law they don’t like. The EU has of course objected, and Gove has confirmed the government does not care. Not only could this scupper talks with the EU, but with the US, who have always been broadly supportive of Northern Ireland. It damages our international reputation in general and risks us being seen as a rogue state. This is beyond political posturing, just as it is beyond the old remain/ leave arguments, because we have already left. A former Tory leader and lord has spoken against it.

For voting, let’s say it’s aimed at the government. So YABU - Britain should not start its independent existence as a sovereign state by breaking laws. YANBU - go ahead, international laws are there for the breaking.

It's a bit disturbing to hear the Justice Minister talking about breaking the law in a way he finds unacceptable.

I wonder what laws are acceptable to break in his eyes?

StealthPolarBear · 13/09/2020 13:08

Yes I thought exactly that!

NeedWineNow · 13/09/2020 13:15

Nothing this self-serving, lying, hypocritical bunch of tossers does surprises me any more sadly.

I am ashamed to say I voted for them. I have been a Tory voter ever since I was eligible to vote. Never again.

The UK Governmental system is the most centralised in the EU.
The cost benefit formula applied to funding projects has been biased towards London and against the regions for decades.
This left many of the regions eligible for EU structural funding based on their deprivation.
Whitehall said thank you very much and sucked even more money into London
leaving the left behind feeling more and more pissed off.

Hence the pattern of the Brexit vote.

Anybody who thinks that Whitehall will suddenly start to give a shit about THE REGIONS after the end of transition
is utterly kidding themselves

@Clavinova

It's a shame the British Government didn't recognise that.

From what I gather, the Labour Party are often accused of being London centrist as well.

Here we go, a variation on “Yes, but Corbyn ...” We haven’t had a Labour government for over a decade. Inconvenient, isn’t it?
ItWasTheBestOfTimes · 13/09/2020 14:43

I don’t know why I’m bothering engaging but you may of course find the odd business Clavinova that will do well out of Brexit, customs agents and insolvency practitioners in particular, but this in no way will make up for the downsides.

According to the government, the annual admin cost of just import export declarations will be more than our net contributions to the EU budget link

Peregrina · 13/09/2020 14:43

I have to assume that if a Bullingdon boy came and smashed Clavinova's windows she would think it fine - just youthful enthusiasm.

VinylDetective · 13/09/2020 15:54

It certainly makes you wonder what this government would have to do to make her decide enough was enough.

Problem of a what feels like a very one-dimensional binary political system. Senior Tories (and past prime ministers) are complaining about this mess.

Revolutionaries everywhere of any inclination always need to learn that tearing stuff up only means destruction. If you want something different you need to have an idea and then plan a path towards it. You build from the ground up (mixing my metaphors), not the top down, and we often follow paths already there because they work and have already navigated the pitfalls.

I don't suppose you saw this coming.
