@brigante9 were you the lady on the beach with the horse where a dog charged at the horse?

bobbythejobby · 10/09/2020 10:07

I fractured both my elbows...at the same time. Fell on the ice. Had to wait four hours in A&E as it was so busy with everyone else also falling on the ice that day. DH had to come into the toilet with me and pull down my pants and wipe me after I had peed. Couldn't straighten my elbows at all for a week at least, had a sling on each arm, it was very awkward. I was just thankful that I had DH at the time to wash my hair and all the other things I couldn't do. I remember a few days later he closed the kitchen door on his way out to work and I couldn't open it because I couldn't straighten my arms and had no strength in my hands so I was effectively locked out of the kitchen until he came home. Fun times.

My horse riding injuries are nothing compared to some people. Broken toe after 700kg of horse stood on my foot, felt the bone go pop.
Broken finger after same horse pissed off while I was lunging him and yanked the lunge line out our my hand. Finger still aches if you twist it a certain way.
Us horsey people definitely aren’t right in the head Grin

BurMaMa2 · 10/09/2020 10:26

Broke pelvic girdle when riding a big young horse. A wasp stung her neck, she reared, lost her balance and fell on top of me. Drs predicted I'd never walk again. I did, as I had a 6 month old baby and no help. That was 50+ years ago. I'm still riding. My exuberant Arabian horse keeps me sane!

QueenPaws · 10/09/2020 10:38

@bengalcat preston did my back op Smile amazing

nokidshere · 10/09/2020 10:49

I got knocked down by a car when I was 10. I had severe head injuries requiring 30 stitches, broken arm, broken leg, broken ankle, broken ribs, and bruising/cuts all over.

When I was 14 I stepped on a piece of glass (hidden underwater) at the beach and had to have 14 stitches in the sole of my foot. It way way more excruciating than the car injuries!

Meceme · 10/09/2020 10:53

Dislocated both kneecap in separate accidents several years ago -put both back myself (instinctive reaction rather than plan).
Broke my foot on 31st August one year (Y6 teacher, head not impressed)
Popped the cartilage in my knee a couple of months ago - by far the most painful.

ClumsyAnnabel · 10/09/2020 11:03

Broken leg and not one but two broken wrists. Car hit me when I was 14. I have lots of metal in my leg but other than wonky wrists made full recovery and thirty years on it's not caused any problems really and tbh the compo from driver at fault saw me through uni and paid deposit on a house Grin

LadyR77 · 10/09/2020 11:18

I broke my wrist. Had it manually manipulated back into place (supposedly). Then when the plaster came off I was in absolute agony, but the doctor refused an x-ray and discharged me from fracture clinic. Cue 7 months of going back and forth to the doctor to try and get referred back to the orthopaedic team - when that finally happened, it transpired it had healed at an angle of 30 degrees out from how it should have been - something that would have been picked up by an x-ray on the day my cast came off, if the doctor hadn't dismissed my concerns. Had to have an operation (a year after the initial fracture) to correct it with a plate and screws. 2 years on from the break I'm still in agony all the time, have lost a lot of function in my wrist and hand and am still waiting for a referral to a hand surgeon for further treatment (obviously all paused now due to Covid). The hospital has admitted providing "substandard care" when treating my initial fracture.

wonkylegs · 10/09/2020 11:21

Broke my shoulder (misadventure in latter teenage years) still get pain in that shoulder

60sbird · 10/09/2020 12:03

Years ago we used to have a hamster and used to let it roam around in one of those plastic ball things anyway one night I was in bed trying to go to sleep facing away from the door, when my then 4 year old ran into my room and climbed into bed with me, I thought ignore him and he will go back to sleep, then the hamster came rolling into the room at full speed and banged into my mirror, my 4 year old sat up quickly so I turned over to tell him not to worry it’s only the hamster mummy must’ve forgotten to put him away anyway I turn over and no child in my bed, no hamster in my room I called my mum up crying, I was 27 and it was 2am, she was not impressed

AriettyHomily · 10/09/2020 12:09

Broken patella.
Cracked ribs.
Broken coccyx.
Cracked ribs again.
Few broken fingers.
Broken big toe.
Broken collar bone.
Torn ACL.
Cracked cheekbone.

Horses and skiing the culprits. I do have healthcare but still involve A&E before being referred on.

ToastyCrumpet · 10/09/2020 12:09

I was just going to ask what happened next!

AriettyHomily · 10/09/2020 12:20

@Brigante9

Trampled by a horse. I had a skin graft and was off work for 3 months, then I had a clot then a bleed in my skull because of the blood thinners. Altogether a pretty shit time. Waves to horsey people who know me
I'm a bit speechless at that one to be honest!
InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 10/09/2020 13:15

Broke my neck - same place as Christopher Reeve. Luckily my spinal cord was only badly bruised.
17 yrs later I have difficulties walking over uneven ground and I have reduced feeling down one side.
But I can breathe unaided and no one really notices ( until I fall arse over tit)

FierceS221 · 10/09/2020 13:38

@bengalcat A rider came off a horse in my grandparents field around 5/6 years ago and was airlifted to hospital in Preston I wonder if it was you?

long shot, I know Hmm

mbosnz · 10/09/2020 13:44

I'm another horsey one. I ruptured my liver. My own stupid fault. That, and a wasp stung my horse at just the wrong time. . . that was 20 minutes away from death, apparently, 8 hours in surgery, three weeks in intensive care, two on the children's ward, and four months off school. . .

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 10/09/2020 13:45

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace tell us more!

Well, I was staying over at my friend's place; why I actually don't know as he only lives a ten minute walk away but I guess that I was tired and decided to crash in the spare room. It was a very hot summer evening.

I awoke in the morning to a scratching noise which, in the fullness of time, presented as a blue tit that had found its way through the (wide) open window and was flying around madly.

I was petrified (as I am of all flying things apart from planes) and bounced out of my bed, onto the single bed next to it and then splat – in the manner of a cartoon character – into the wall. It sounds funny but I did hurt myself and the bruising was significant.

My friend heard the kerfuffle, came in and let the blue tit out. Now, why didn't I think of that? Grin

HorseyHorseHorse · 10/09/2020 13:52

@Brigante9 oh wow!!

Mine is also horse related but definitely not as bad as that.

When I was young (3 I think), a horse bit me and picked me up by my thigh and crushed my thigh. I had to go to the hospital regularly for years to ensure it hadn't damaged it permanently and I could walk properly. I still have a painful lump where the muscle is misshapen.

My parents did sue the owners (it was at a horse riding lesson for small children!) Which bought me a fun holiday with friends and my first car when I was 18 though Grin

weegiemum · 10/09/2020 13:52

Fell over some wool I was sorting out on the lounge floor. Broke my ankle in several places and dislocated it too. The bone was trough the skin and I was seriously bleeding - at home alone but luckily the phone was in reach.

Was very ill the following year with full blown sepsis after a cat scratch got infected. There's a whole week of my life I just don't remember at all as I was delirious. I was a hairs breadth from itu and dialysis. I'm ok thinking about it but dh is still a bit traumatised I think, and that was 5 years ago.

Pellewsmate · 10/09/2020 14:15

Paper cut.

bengalcat · 10/09/2020 14:25

@FierceS221 who knows , was on holiday in the lakes at the time and riding near Kendal - airlifted to Lancaster Royal Infirmary then ambulanced to Preston in ‘ the old shaky fiat ambulance’ - their words not mine ( thankfully my sense of humour was intact as that seemed a somewhat inappropriate vehicle for a spinal injury )

fairydustandpixies · 10/09/2020 14:34

@Brigant9 bleurgh!!! And that is why I don't ride anymore - I got thrown and trampled, fractured spine in two places and was covered in bruises but luckily was wearing a body protector. A body protector wouldn't have save your leg though - jeez!!! That's horrific!

HomeEdRocks18 · 10/09/2020 14:40

Coccyx. After sliding off the end of a massive softplay slide. I had to crawl on all fours out of the centre, needed help to get into the back seat of the car, then had to lie on my side to get to hospital. The X ray was embarrassing!
