That this is giving me the rage

I’ve posted about this before but now the roof is on it’s really starting to annoy me. It’s going to be a fucking wood workshop along with all the noise & dust that goes with it 😡

Ie informed the council - who are hot to look into the planning permission aspect.

In the meantime has anyone any ideas how we can cover this up so it’s not a complete eyesore?

Ideally nothing planted as we got rid of grass & plants last year to give us a low maintenance garden. The sun is overhead most of the day so I don’t think it will block our light.

And the trampoline didn’t used to be there - it was there temporarily but we’ve left it there because I want to annoy them - I know I’m being petty 😜

@DidoAtTheLido

The obvious solution is to re-introduce some actual plants into your outdoor garden, trellis and trailing / climbing plants. They are hardly difficult to look after and if you pick the right ones you will get lovely scent, and support bees and birds.

And will make your garden look a lot better. Though I realise taste is subjective.

Thank you, I do think the garden is quite bare but we just don’t have the time to look after it properly. A few easy to look after climbers may do the trick. I was looking at some bamboo in pots.

I think IF the noise and dust becomes a problem then you can ask him to make some changes (eg put doors on the shed for a start).

In the meantime, some proper safety netting round the trampoline would do a good job of screening the shed...

Bluntness100 · 09/09/2020 13:14

I wouldn’t be moaning if it wasn’t blocking a view!

What’s it blocking your view of? Their back garden when you look out your top window? Because it is certainly not blocking your view if anything else.

Oysterbabe · 09/09/2020 13:14

That unnetted trampoline is making me feel anxious.

justlliloleme · 09/09/2020 13:15

@DDiva

The noise could be annoying but at the moment it is just potential noise, you dont actually know itll be noisy.

The shed is only a foot or so higher than your fence and wont really impact you, that is petty.

It’s 3 ft above a 6ft fence

Your Garden is giving me the rage OP. Do you have any hedeghog highways in that fencing seeing as there is nowhere for the critters to eat or drink?

Dozycuntlaters · 09/09/2020 13:17

I wasn't really sure what the problem was, had to read some posts to find out. it's not that bad, just get some trellis, fake ivy or something and pretty it up.

Your garden isn't low maintenance though, that's a massive bit of decking to upkeep, unless its composite of course. The trampoline is an eyesore so I'd get rid of that if I were you rather than keep it up to be petty.

LST · 09/09/2020 13:17

You're going to get slated for making your life easier with a low maintenance garden op. Mumsnet is full of garden snobs. God forbid people have fake grass!

SoupDragon · 09/09/2020 13:18

And you know this how? I wouldn’t be moaning if it wasn’t blocking a view!

What view is it blocking then? From the picture it looks like a view of another house and the Shed Builder's garden.

justlliloleme · 09/09/2020 13:19

@NYMM

Good grief! MN'ers can be quite brutal Hmm

The shed most likely has permitted development but until/if the woodworking becomes a nuisance it's unlikely the Planning dept or Building control would be interested.

As has been suggested, put some trellis along the top of your fence

As for the trampoline...It's moveable, can be dismantled or even used to sit or lay on. It's not for others to tell you how you should use it. Ignore.

Thank you. People just like to be opinionated without all the facts - I clearly can’t post every factor on here without a reeelllyyy llooong post 😜

But I appreciate opinions just the same - it is AIBU after all!

I actually reported it to the council after it was suggested by someone who worked in planning on another thread.

I’d show you what view it’s blocking - but there’s something g in the way 🤷🏼‍♀️

I was thinking about this the other day - also having read a recent thread about an OP's neighbour opening up a retail shop in his garden. Millions of us are working from home now; many did before COVID and many more will continue to do so afterwards. Obviously, you don't want endless noise from power tools all day, but is that definitely what's going to happen? If the neighbour is a furniture maker or similar, aren't there a lot of tasks such as measuring and varnishing/painting, as well as the noisy ones? Would he be doing it full time or as a hobby/sideline?

If you can legally work from home on a computer or phone or even run an online business from home, as long as customers don't visit your premises (maybe to collect orders, but not browse - I don't know), it does seem unfair that somebody running a different kind of business/sideline from home is instantly complained about and threatened with being reported, any unacceptable levels of noise nuisance notwithstanding, of course.

KeepingPlain · 09/09/2020 13:29

I’d show you what view it’s blocking - but there’s something g in the way

It's blocking your view of trees... Which are blocking your view of anything else. Considering you got rid of anything natural in your garden, I'm surprised you're upset at not being able to see trees.

WorraLiberty · 09/09/2020 13:30

hedgehog highways?
oakleaffy · 09/09/2020 13:31

I thought the trampoline was the hideous thing....I can't see anything else annoying ..
If it is to be a wood workshop, it is TINY.

Re dust, it doesn't happen as wood machinery has extraction that gets sucked via ducting out into a collecting bag, or onto a bag on the machine.
Wood machinery can be noisy, especially if it is a thicknesser..
Depends what they will be making.
Looks like a hobby sized shed to me.
Trellis will hide the view.

userxx · 09/09/2020 13:34

@notreallybotheredaboutausernam

In a victory for hedgehog conservation, new planning laws require small holes be included in the base of fences in new developments, creating 'highways' that enable hedgehogs to roam freely.

InescapableDeath · 09/09/2020 13:35

Your later picture is better as it shows just how big it is - and it's huge. But people won't get that far.

It would annoy me too but I'd just have to try (and fail) to ignore it. I wouldn't necessarily be right to be annoyed but...

1forAll74 · 09/09/2020 13:35

I don't see any issues with your neighboughs wooden building.At least you can keep checking what he does in there, whilst bouncing up and down on that trampoline thing.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/09/2020 13:36

Not wanting to derail the thread, but I've never completely understood how trampoline nets are unquestionably safe and an un-netted trampoline is horendously dangerous - I'd be interested to learn more.

I read that children under 6 are not supposed to use a proper standard trampoline at all, as their bones and joints are not yet sufficiently strong enough to withstand the forces exerted on them. That's more the age group I'd expect not to be able to centre themselves and therefore risk falling against the side - and I presume you'd have to strongly anchor the trampoline down to stop the whole structure from toppling sideways when a child hurls themselves against the net.

I always understood that the biggest danger by far was when more than one person uses it at a time, especially if they are of quite different sizes/ages- but wouldn't that be obvious that it's strictly one at a time? How can it it actually work and be fun to have more than one contact point on the springy surface?

It looks like it may be half the garden which would indeed need planning. The roof can be up to 2.5m though. I'd get my tape out OP if you really are concerned.

oldmapie · 09/09/2020 13:37

Nice photo of your neighbour there op.

ilovemyrednosedaymug · 09/09/2020 13:37

OP, I would be very surprised if this had passed planning as a Wood Workshop. My cousin lives in a rural area, only a couple of neighbours, and he was refused planning for a Wood Workshop due to the noise.

It isn't just a "shed" if it is a Wood Workshop. It could be going several hours a day with screaming woodwork tools etc, strong solvents, dust, all sorts of things.

You have already taken the first step which is to contact the council, so all you can do now is await their ruling. Things like this are banned from residential areas with good reason. Our deeds dating back to the 1980's forbid anyone from running a business or shop from their house.

Laaalaaaa · 09/09/2020 13:38

Sell your house immediately - disgraceful neighbours.
