Cake smash...

I know I am. But if people can convince me I'm not I'll be much happier 😁😁

When DS was 1 I was opposed to cake smash photoshoots because it was a waste of cake. And he was tube fed all wouldn't have touched it and was actually in the middle of a 4 month awful hospitalisation for his birthday and when he came out he ate even less than when he went in and he had/has sensory issues that just would have made it not viable.

Now I have twins who would devour a cake shop between them, who don't seem to have any issues touching messy stuff or eating ANYTHING and I really want one.

But I know they're terrible.

Would I be unreasonable to bury my principles for some cute photos of fat babies covering in icing and cream?

Nothing wrong with doing a "cake smash" with a muffin or cupcake if that's your thing. It's a tiny amount of cake. I think wasting a large nicely decorated cake is a shame (as I certainly wouldn't want to eat a cake that's been "smashed" by a toddler so it's mostly going to be thrown away).

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 08/09/2020 21:34

It's your money, do what you want with it.
Honestly if I could have afforded it, I would have loved to have done a cake smash shoot and got cute photos of DC.

Sailingblue · 08/09/2020 21:35

I don’t really get it as by 1 I’d spent 6 months cleaning up both of my babies covered in dinner. I found the mess of blw a proper chore. I’ve got hundreds of photos of mine smeared in yogurt, pasta etc but none of them have ever made it to a photo I’d want to frame. I’m not sure I’d pay for the privilege of smashing up cake but if it would make you happy then crack on and ignore the more extreme posters.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/09/2020 21:47

@SisterAgatha

And if someone really did just call you a cunt for having a picture taken of your baby, and doing what makes you happy, then I think they need a cake smash. On their mean spirited unkind face.
Ooh maybe @FridayNightAtTheBronze got it right, and they meant Chav not Count

@nitsandwormsdodger

Am I the only person in the universe who has Never heard of a cake smash photo thing ?? WTF ??? how is this a new craze ? Everyone has photos of food ( usually cake or jelly ice cream ) smeared around their face as babies ??!

Also it this whole thread not a blatant ad for someone's insta account ??

I'm really not that interesting and though my fat babies are adorable, still no

I think the food waste is obscene and immoral too.

I never understand these kinds of reactions given that about a third of the food bought in the U.K. ends up in the bin, week after week.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_waste_in_the_United_Kingdom?

Surely that’s the thing to focus on?

Hoppinggreen · 08/09/2020 22:04

I hate them but that’s because people of any age covered in food makes me feel a bit sick rather than anything else

SleepingStandingUp · 08/09/2020 22:05

@Shmithecat2

Food waste aside (I'm not that bothered about cake either), I find them massively contrived, wanky and pretentious.
Ooh interesting cos of assume wanky and pretentious was the opposite of chavvy and tacky so I feel like I'm bridging the whole spectrum of MN judgement If only I could mentioned my kids names I'd really get MN what for

Who called the OP a cunt for that? I only saw it from the poster that loves them. Apparently if you think they're tacky then you're a miserable cunt and should fuck off. Which says it all really
DioneTheDiabolist · 08/09/2020 22:10

Knock yerself out OP. It's not my bag, but neither is baking salt dough, glittery shit.🤷‍♀️

Hope you and your DC had a ball.Grin

herrcomesthenamechanger · 08/09/2020 22:10

Do it, there is no way every poster here never wastes food. Or spends money on something they love but don't need

It sounds like you had a hard time with your first little one, if this makes you happy just do it.

If you feel bad about it, donate to a food bank at the same time.

I have a freezer of oranges and tomatoes etc so they didnt get wasted of that balances it out.

I just gave a slice of his cake to DS, admittedly it was for him to play with and try a bit, but ended up with the same amount of mess as a cake smash. Couldn't face wasting a whole cake, and still got some photos.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/09/2020 22:14

@chrislilleyswig pp said it brings the C word to mind. Given chav isn't a swear word it didn't occur to me that's the word they couldn't type and assumed they were calling me a cunt

@Cloudtraffic

We had a session with a professional photographer who specialises in cake smashes.

Yup I’m getting old

Grin
PyongyangKipperbang · 08/09/2020 22:20

I wouldnt but because I have a SN son (he is an adult now, doing very well and living independently) who couldnt do a lot of things. I always said that I would never do anything for his siblings that I couldnt do for him, he was the eldest.

And I didnt.

As he got older and took pleasure from helping them do things he couldnt do, and I would do other stuff just for him, it was better but at that age? No. It would hurt my heart to do something for younger ones that an issue absolutely out of his control, he couldnt do.

I do also have an issue with food waste, but thats for each person to decide for themselves.

Casschops · 08/09/2020 22:22

I added cake smashes to my list of NO along with baby showers, gender reveal parties and expensive hen dos.

CloudPop · 08/09/2020 22:22

What does everyone like about these l? Leaving the food waste aside, what is the actual attraction ? Genuine question

TheNewLook · 08/09/2020 22:23

To clarify, I’m the poster who said the C word.

I meant chav.

TheNewLook · 08/09/2020 22:24

Those that enjoy the cake smash thing, can you explain what the cuteness is? I’ve always thought food smeared on babies faces is gross. Used to wipe mine after every mouthful. Can’t imagine finding a cake smash anything but horrific.

TheNewLook · 08/09/2020 22:25

Also, do they willingly cover their heads and the entire tray of their high chair in the cake? Or is there a lot of prepping and cajoling behind the scenes..

notso · 08/09/2020 22:27

They don't appeal to me, I don't see the point.
I don't understand the naked baby ones either, a family member has one of her, her DH, their eldest all clothed and their dog whose wearing a scarf Confused all gazing down at their naked newborn DC2 who is randomly in a nest on the floor. It is one of the most bizarre and cringy things I've ever seen.
I'm just not someone who appreciates professional photos though, I didn't want a wedding photographer but was persuaded otherwise, thirteen years on and I still haven't printed any off.

lazylinguist · 08/09/2020 22:34

I think they are pointless, crass and a waste of cake tbh. Also, being covered in cake does not in any way increase the cuteness of babies imo.
