Cake smash...

I know I am. But if people can convince me I'm not I'll be much happier 😁😁

When DS was 1 I was opposed to cake smash photoshoots because it was a waste of cake. And he was tube fed all wouldn't have touched it and was actually in the middle of a 4 month awful hospitalisation for his birthday and when he came out he ate even less than when he went in and he had/has sensory issues that just would have made it not viable.

Now I have twins who would devour a cake shop between them, who don't seem to have any issues touching messy stuff or eating ANYTHING and I really want one.

But I know they're terrible.

Would I be unreasonable to bury my principles for some cute photos of fat babies covering in icing and cream?

Up to you I dont see the appeal myself. Its only cake though, I don't really see it as a waste either mind you.

ktp100 · 08/09/2020 19:51

Bake the cake yourself, make a back drop with a sheet and take your own photos.

We did one with my son and it was great.

I don't give one solitary shit what anyone else thinks about them and neither should you!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 08/09/2020 19:51

Not something I would do to be honest. I think they’re really naff and a waste of cake.

Just take a cute photo of your twins with a cupcake. They’ll make enough of a mess with that.

SockYarn · 08/09/2020 19:52

Horrendous trend. Please don't.

user1468538201 · 08/09/2020 19:53

Yuk, yuk, yuk. Hate the idea, the pictures, the fakeness and the waste.

DappledThings · 08/09/2020 19:53

Never got the attraction of this or any of those newborn photo shoots. I've never seen a picture from any of them that looked anything other than really weird. But it's your money to waste!

emmathedilemma · 08/09/2020 19:53

It disgusts me that people waste food like this when there's charities and volunteers who provide cakes for children who wouldn't otherwise get a birthday cake. its just a vile social media attention grabbing thing like gender reveals IMO.

WhatamessIgotinto · 08/09/2020 19:54

Nope.

Nooch · 08/09/2020 19:54

Children smeared with food, I just don't find appealing. Makes me want to get a flannel out. Each to their own I suppose Envy

paintmegood · 08/09/2020 19:54

Waste of cake which is a crime! Also tacky, faddy and really not that cute.

Hatscats · 08/09/2020 19:55

I really don’t get them, what’s the point? Weird!

InvincibleInvisibility · 08/09/2020 19:57

Serious question- do you encourage the baby to smash the cake? How do they learn its just this one cake and not any others?

icelollycraving · 08/09/2020 19:59

I don’t really get them, your kid all covered in buttercream. I find them a bit tacky, sorry!
If I was paying for professional photos I’d want them to better than I could take myself. Messy toddler is a pretty average day at that age.

PhilSwagielka · 08/09/2020 19:59

@romeolovedjulliet

ffs you can't compost cake it will attract rats and other vermin !
You can use cake crumbs in other dishes though. Keep the rest and use it for trifle or whatever.
AmelieTaylor · 08/09/2020 20:00

I honestly just don't 'get' them.

Kids make enough mess eating at that age without being encouraged.

But if you do, then don't be telling him off when he does it when you're eating out!

chrislilleyswig · 08/09/2020 20:00

Do it if you want to

It's tacky as fuck, but I'm sure you don't care about my opinion

PhilSwagielka · 08/09/2020 20:03

What's the basic premise, a kid gets photographed eating a cake?

sapnupuas · 08/09/2020 20:05

My friend had one for her 30th 😂

FridayNightAtTheBronze · 08/09/2020 20:05

I roll my eyes when I see these tacky cake smash canvasses on people's walls. But if you want to, go ahead, does it matter what other people think? My daughter was tube fed too (cleft lip and palate). I still wouldn't do it.

DappledThings · 08/09/2020 20:05

@PhilSwagielka

What's the basic premise, a kid gets photographed eating a cake?
A kid gets photographed playing with cake rather than eating it. They are encouraged to make as much mess as possible. It is apparently mandatory for girls to be in tutus. It's really weird.
Cryalot2 · 08/09/2020 20:07

Never heard of them until now, but then my kids are adults and we have no gc.
Each to their own, but it does seem wasteful, especially just for a photo.

NoRoomInBed · 08/09/2020 20:07

You could do cupcakes instead of a whole cake? I think it's really cute. I haven't done one but that's more I bake their cakes and I dont want to see all my work smooshed.

CallMeOnMyCell · 08/09/2020 20:08

Go for it if you want to do it, mumsnet will never approve Wink

emmyhelly · 08/09/2020 20:09

yuk no

JanewaysBun · 08/09/2020 20:09

So tacky!

Also I don't even know what the point of them is? Give the kid a slice of cake (probably their first taste of cake) and you'll get a cute reaction as they eat it. Why do you need a whole cake???
