To ask if you find Cardi B WAP offensive or liberating?

Just that really, I'm undecided. I think it depends on what mood I'm in.
On one hand she's only using language that male rappers have been using for decades and it is liberating that a woman can express herself in an obviously sexual way and why not?
On the other some of the lyrics are absolutely mad
'swipe your nose like a credit card'
'touch that little dangly thing that swings at the back on my throat' 😂

What do you think?

** Male Ffs

gingganggooleywotsit · 06/09/2020 21:50

Agree.. it gets on my tits when people say, oh men have been rapping about this stuff for years..So? Doesn't make it any better when a woman does it.

SimonJT · 06/09/2020 21:50

@lookatallthosechickens

For fucks' sake *@SimonJT* that's not what I said. I said that a white person covering a Black artist's music purely to mine it for humour and to try to make it look ridiculous via the contrast is racist. That's what Biffy Clyro was (were? not sure if that's the guy's name or the band's name) doing.

If you actually want to learn, instead of just being reactionary and calling a Black woman ridiculous for trying to educate you about racism, you could read up on the history of blackface minstrels as a starting point to see how and why this sort of cover a racist and nasty thing to do.

Any artist doing a cover out of genuine appreciation and respect, not as a joke, is fine, but white people lost the right to do jokey covers of Black music the first time they decided to do a bit of slavery. Sorry if you find this to be a devastating loss, or whatever.

Them covering the song isn’t at all racist, the song is ridiculous, so much so it is almost funny. A white person turning a stupid song into a humourous cover isn’t racist. Actual racism is a problem, claiming this is racism is an insult to victims of actual racism.

Whats a uvulva? Do I have one? 😂

I don't know why I enabled the voting tbh don't worry about voting either way I'm not sure what each would mean either!

@SimonJT right, sorry to have bothered you, I didn't realise you were so overwhelmingly thick. As you were, love.

BeingLonely · 06/09/2020 21:53

Meh, every generation seems to have a ‘shocking’ song. As usual the lyrics are dire but I like the catchy tune

Not at all thick, I just know what actual racism is, and that cover is not an example of racism.

Elsiebear90 · 06/09/2020 21:55

I think it’s liberating in the sense of normalising and glamourising wet vaginas, this is probably tmi, but I’ve always been slightly embarrassed about how wet I can be at times, and partners have commented on it, so I did like the song for that reason. However, there are some problematic elements that others have mentioned.

Andthewinnerislucky · 06/09/2020 21:56

Suggesting you're too old for a genre is a bit amusing tbh. I think it's not exactly about age, more about taste. Both young and old can like/not like the same thing.

I used to enjoy rap (and other genres) growing up but I don't listen to them anymore. Haven't actively listened to "new" music for years unless I happen to come across one somewhere like this thread quoting lyrics or the song blaring somewhere or an ad or something. My tastes changed and not to do with age - more likely some experiences in life and therefore my interests. This could have happened at any age or not happened at all.

From what I've seen on this thread and another about one WAP, I'm not interested in the least bit to take a look/listen. Sounds like crap. Same with many songs available nowadays. To each their own though.

BilboBercow · 06/09/2020 21:58

I much prefer Missy Elliott's take on female sexuality. She doesn't conform to the male gaze and raps about having a bag of toys and not needing no boys.

BeFire · 06/09/2020 22:02

I just don't like the word gushy Confused

Andthewinnerislucky · 06/09/2020 22:03

Meant to write "... and another one about WAP ..."

Not "... and another about one WAP ..."

scoobydoo1971 · 06/09/2020 22:06

I don't know about a wet ass pussy...but she lost me for using stoned pussies in her videos. While her management have never confirmed if real animals were used, or green screen images, there is an enduring and harmful message that large cats are a trophy or opulent material asset.

That makes me throw up as much as her lyrics and interesting assortment of costumes....including the real fur number she was snapped wearing in 2019. Not sure where all this sits with her new vegan range of fashion...her vulgar lyrics are not anything new though, and Missy Elliot was doing a better job two decades ago.

Griefmonster · 06/09/2020 22:07

@SimonJT bangs gavel

Whole world: We are so grateful for your final judgement that Biffy Clyro's cover is DEFINITELY NOT RACIST and anyone who says otherwise is just wrong. We will go back and watch again to search out this new comfortable understanding and no doubt wet our pants a little (but just from the hilarity of it obvs and not the sexual provocativity).

Very well done you x

Andthewinnerislucky · 06/09/2020 22:09

I actually like Cardi B's (online) personality. I've watched a few clips a long time ago where she was ranting about different things and others where she was being interviewed. She's funny and entertaining. May be an unpopular opinion but I think "Okurrrr" is brilliant. I really like it, okurrr!

Benjispruce2 · 06/09/2020 22:09

Demeaning. Rise above don’t join those male rappers in the gutter.

MoonBaby1 · 06/09/2020 22:17

@lookatallthosechickens thank you. X

TheHappyHerbivore · 06/09/2020 22:19

Neither, particularly. But it doesn’t have to be liberating for me personally to be liberating for others.

LoeliaPonsonby · 06/09/2020 22:20

Can we move this thread to Classics to immortalise a textbook case of mansplaining, vis. SimonJT, a white man, telling a black woman, lookatallthosechickens, what is and isn’t racist?

It could be used in many dictionaries....

Since when have I been white?
PreggoFeminist86 · 06/09/2020 22:26

I fucking love it. I'm a fan of Cardi B in general.

The 'copying Men' argument makes ZERO sense to me & is really bloody depressing... why is owning & celebrating your sexuality seen as an inherently Male act? Why can't a Woman want sex, romantic or otherwise, & brag about her wet pussy?

Yes, they are using graphic terminology, but thats how a lot of Women talk about sex with their friends now (albeit not on Mumsnet).

I wouldn't necessarily call it liberating to be fair, but I defintely don't find it degrading. It's two rich, successful Women bragging about the power that their individual sexuality holds over Men, if anything. I also don't think that everything that every Woman does has to be a Feminist act. "Thats not Feminist/ Feminist enough" is turning into a stick to beat successful Women with.

Any particular reason you thought @SimonJT is white?
lookatallthosechickens · 06/09/2020 22:31

Ah yes, the convenient 'but how do you know I'm white?' ploy. An absolute classic.

If @simonJT is able to prove to us that he is, in fact, not white*, I will donate £100 to the charity of his choice, my only caveat that it be registered and not overtly religious. Obviously this might be tricky, so if someone from MNHQ can verify with him privately, I'll be happy to take their word for it, and they can similarly verify my donation.

Elephantday82 · 06/09/2020 22:32

I think it’s vile and as a lot of her fan base are youngsters I’m disgusted by her.
