To ask if you find Cardi B WAP offensive or liberating?

Just that really, I'm undecided. I think it depends on what mood I'm in.
On one hand she's only using language that male rappers have been using for decades and it is liberating that a woman can express herself in an obviously sexual way and why not?
On the other some of the lyrics are absolutely mad
'swipe your nose like a credit card'
'touch that little dangly thing that swings at the back on my throat' 😂

What do you think?

@Fizzingsherbert

It's gross. Not liberating in the slightest and I hate the thought of it being an anthem for teenage girls
Yep!
SD1978 · 06/09/2020 20:56

Neither- it just sounds shit. I don't think it's musically or politically challenged- it's shock tactics to sell records.

sar302 · 06/09/2020 20:57

If you haven't heard it, Biffy Clyro did an amazing live lounge cover of it, changing WAP to WAB - Wet as Biffy. Have a look on you tube and listen out for "Park it in my tiny wee garage", which had me laughing out loud to myself in the car.

JoanWilderbeast · 06/09/2020 20:58

I've never quite understood how women emulating aspects of male reprehensible behaviour was empowering for the majority and a good thing for society in general.

Louise000000 · 06/09/2020 20:58

Will find it now and have a listen!

Neither, really. It bores me.

But it’s not aimed at middle aged white women like me, I expect.

pasteldechocolateconchispa · 06/09/2020 21:00

Not heard it, seen enough news stories about it though. I connect Spotify to the car when I get in or listen to my own music so miss a lot of chart stuff. My 12 year old DD is well into 80s music so doesn’t listen to current stuff either.

As for that dangly bit at the back of your throat nothing more annoying than having a general anaesthetic and that irritating you for a few day’s

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 06/09/2020 21:00

It’s just a weird song, I find it pretty funny but my humour is rather crass and weird.

Tbh it’s worth it just for the Ben Shapiro tweet who basically admitted he’s never gotten his wife wet before Grin

SeasideMaiden · 06/09/2020 21:00

I find it to be neither offensive or liberating.

I've been listening to bands who have sung about this sort of thing, most my life.

The only reason these discussions are happening are because it's been written by someone mainstream.

I suggest people look up bands like Lords of Acid. It's been done before.

MrsVeryTired · 06/09/2020 21:01

Offensive, teenage (and younger) girls do not need that song in their lives.

If you could cast a spell and only adults could hear it, fine, each to their own but otherwise, nope!

Ladywinesalot · 06/09/2020 21:08

@LockdownLump Agree

Porn culture

Disappointed with it, I like CardiB, she’s incredibly talented and intelligent, but wap for me is cheep and tacky.

Like they wanted to controversial and push the boat out but it’s just boring 🤷‍♀️

tearinyourhand · 06/09/2020 21:08

@Louise000000

Men might be wanking to it, but she's the one that's laughing all the way to the bank.
Yes, she might be, as one individual. But the millions of teenage girls who are having this inflicted on them don't stand to gain anything at all.

Just because we can do something doesn't mean we should.

LolaSmiles · 06/09/2020 21:13

It's not liberating and I find it tiresome that women joining the patriarchy's game of normalising the objectification of women is somehow considered feminist.

It's a bit like the thread about a sex game in SRE materials for 13 year olds had people falling over themselves to consider anyone who objects a 'prude'. There seems to be a lot of boundary eroding going on and a push to normalise women being involved in sex that's all about male fantasy.

ktp100 · 06/09/2020 21:13

I can't help liking Cardi. She's an absolute nutter and I found her really funny & likeable on Love & Hip Hop New York.

The impression I get from her is that she is absolutely comfortable with the effect she can have on men and she's not afraid to capitalise on it. She's very forthright about sex and what she wants and she's not afraid to be controversial. I loved her last album.

I can't make my mind up about WAP though. I don't find it empowering myself, but I also feel like I want to defend her when she's called out for the lyrics because if it's OK for male rappers to talk about sex, why not her? Wet ass pussy, though. Grim!

If she's just doing it because she can that's her choice. If she's just doing it because male rappers do it, that's another thing. Surely women should be aiming higher? Or should we not shame her because she's a woman doing what she wants and that should be OK?

Oh, I dunno. It's a thinker, for sure!

I did enjoy the Russel Brand Under the Skin vid about it, tho.....

I was chatting to my DD (18) about this , she informed me if you try to do the dance you get blisters Confused

I've watched the video, if I tried to do the dance I'd need traction.

It is shite . shock lyrics for the sake of it and basically glamourising prostitution

I don't cook, I don't clean But let me tell you how I got this ring (ayy, ayy)

Ask for a car while you ride that dick

He got some money, then that's where I'm headed

I'll stick with 'Blurred Lines' (at least its catchy )

DisgruntledPelican · 06/09/2020 21:17

Neither; it’s just a novelty song. It’s like a 2020s version of “Baby Got Back”!

lookatallthosechickens · 06/09/2020 21:18

Ah yes, Biffy Clyro, continuing the proud tradition of white people taking the piss out of music that doesn't belong to them. Oh look isn't he hilarious, with his wee scottish accent, saying all these SHOCKING things that those OUTRAGEOUS black ladies said! The CONTRAST is MOST amusing! Almost as HILARIOUS as when Ian McKellen recites some N.W.A. lyrics in received pronunciation or a white woman with shiny blond bangs and a floral a tea dress does a TERRIBLY twee version of a Jay-Z song with a ukulele. Boring, not funny, not original, and a bit racist to boot.

As to your original question, it's a fun song and Cardi B is adorable, but she doesn't write her own stuff and this song is a novelty that I lost interest in pretty much immediately. Megan's other stuff, however, is great, she's an amazing writer with great flow. A legend in the making. As a Black woman, seeing Black artists like Megan, SZA, Little Simz, Princess Nokia, Tierra Whack, BbyMutha, and on and on and on finally start to get their day in the sun is, however, liberating as fuck.

I feel really sorry for anyone who finds it 'offensive'. It's just a bit of fun. The most offensive thing about it was putting Kylie Kardashian in the video with other actually talented artists.

Griefmonster · 06/09/2020 21:18

Neither liberating nor offensive. It's music. I like it and find the video mesmerising (as a PP said) but I till prefer Missy every day of the week. "Cool off" has been my song and video of the summer. Have you seen the cool off challenge videos? Amazing

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/09/2020 21:18

Neither. I think it's a pretty shite song but I'm not offended by it.

tearinyourhand · 06/09/2020 21:18

I'm fine with shaming the men too. I don't find her lyrics any more horrible than I find the men's similar lyrics.

CitizenFame · 06/09/2020 21:20

Stop being so ridiculous
lookatallthosechickens · 06/09/2020 21:20

I did enjoy the Russel Brand Under the Skin vid about it, tho.....

Of the people whose hot takes I want to hear in regards to Black women and the music they are currently releasing, Russel Brand is somewhere slightly above Boris Johnson but below literally everyone else on the planet. No one asked, love.

lookatallthosechickens · 06/09/2020 21:22

@SimonJT stop calling Black people ridiculous when they point out racism to you. Thanks in advance.

Griefmonster · 06/09/2020 21:23

@70isaLimitNotaTarget the ONLY reason blurred lines is catchy is because Marvin Gaye.

I'm 1000x more offended by Robin Thick e than Cardi B and Megan
