To ask if you find Cardi B WAP offensive or liberating?

Just that really, I'm undecided. I think it depends on what mood I'm in.
On one hand she's only using language that male rappers have been using for decades and it is liberating that a woman can express herself in an obviously sexual way and why not?
On the other some of the lyrics are absolutely mad
'swipe your nose like a credit card'
'touch that little dangly thing that swings at the back on my throat' 😂

What do you think?

@BubblyWater

I don't feel liberated, I feel offended. Its a vile song that normalises violent sex to young people in a similar way to easy access to hardcore porn.

My fear is that some men now have unrealistic expectations of women in bed with respect to choking, etc. and this song just contributes to that idea.

I despair for my daughters' future, I really do.

I enjoy choking, hair pulling, slapping by a respectful partner in a safe context. That's why the whole convo needs to be had.
unmarkedbythat · 14/09/2020 15:19

Neither, don't care.

As always, disappointed by the posters who don't understand consent and autonomy and can't wrap their heads around other people having different tastes. The assumption that women who like violent sex are abnormal and/ or abused and cannot possibly be making our own free, informed and enthusiastic choices is far more offensive than any song.

Guessing the thing she means is the uvula (I had to look that up as I had no flippin idea what it was called) Grin

Aha! Thanks. Well I've learned something new today. Never realised this song would be so educational Grin

StarchyStanley · 14/09/2020 16:51

I was coming on to say "my neck, my back, my pussy and my crack".

Also pretty much anything by Peaches, from the noughties. I used to listen to that all the time. Don't think I found it liberating or offensive tbh. Wouldn't play it in front of my kids or anything.

LuckyAmy1986 · 14/09/2020 17:28

@netsybetsy 😂

Glitteryone · 14/09/2020 17:54

I fucking love it! Anything by Cardi B brings out my inner stripper 🤣

I love all rap music though.

My life is so straight laced and boring. My taste in music doesn’t match at all! 🙈

CSIblonde · 15/09/2020 00:15

It's a cynical use of pornification culture & imagery dressed up as female empowerment. It goes too far for me. Vulgar & tacky. Tereibke role model for young girls who are already bombarded with porn type inagery. And lazy marketing wulise. Sexy isn't just in your face ,tits out etc. Little Mix manage to keep it this side of ok as they've got older & now also have older less tweenie demographic.

CSIblonde · 15/09/2020 00:16
  • Sorry re typos, fat fingers & phone issues.
thedalaisllama · 15/09/2020 00:44

Can't take it seriously with the line about the dangly dangly thing.

BlackWaveComing · 15/09/2020 00:49

Boring.

I find her boring.

Commercial pap.

Wiredforsound · 15/09/2020 01:46

I think it’s fucking brilliant. What’s not to like about women celebrating having sex on their terms? Rihanna’s has been singing about it for years. It’s not groundbreaking, but anything that supports women to have the kind of sex they want, whenever they want, with whomever they want is alright with me. We’re not all fan fluttering virgins, you know.

TomPinch · 15/09/2020 04:41

I listened to the song. Probably won't again (by choice). Perhaps for a laugh.

It's real Beavis and Butthead level stuff. Just imagine a teenage boy singing about his priapism. It's the same.

Khadernawazkhan · 15/09/2020 06:02

All this foul stuff is dripping into the minds of our young. And has been for years with all sorts of other media. What good does it do? How does any of it make us better or kinder people?

There is nothing about this song that's on women's terms. Don't be. So naive. It's written with the male gaze firmly in mind.

@Imworthit

I'm only messing... I do greatly enjoy cursing tho. Not for everyone.
OK, I'll remember that dh feels liberated when he next calls me a fat cunt and laugh... Hmm
cappuccinocat · 15/09/2020 09:04

This sad woman, like so many others, is trying too hard.

Still, my 12 year-old tells me it’s the No. 1 Tik Tok dance of the moment. Yay!

So well done Cardi B for your contribution to society - millions of 10-16 year-olds grinding on the floor and mouthing your shit lyrics.

ChaToilLeam · 15/09/2020 09:11

There is nothing liberating about it. It’s horrible and pornified, doesn’t challenge anything.

WildAboutMyPlanet · 15/09/2020 09:18

Think it’s shit. Not liberating. Not offended, just saddened that this is what music has become to be honest....

This is pretty much what I feel about it too.
Lollyneenah · 15/09/2020 09:22

I hate it Grin but I wouldnt call it rap - I'm total 90s rap snob.

I do take umbrage with people thinking that this is all rap is, misogynist and violent etc.
A beautiful bit of lyrics from Tupac for the uneducated ...

And when he tells you you ain't nuttin' don't believe him
And if he can't learn to love you, you should leave him
'Cause sista you don't need him
And I ain't tryin' to gas ya up, I just call 'em how I see 'em
You know it makes me unhappy (what's that)
When brothas make babies, and leave a young mother to be a pappy
And since we all came from a woman
Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman
I wonder why we take from our women
Why we rape our women, do we hate our women?
I think it's time to kill for our women
Time to heal our women, be real to our women
And if we don't we'll have a race of babies
That will hate the ladies, that make the babies
And since a man can't make one
He has no right to tell a woman when and where to create one
So will the real men get up
I know you're fed up ladies, but keep your head up

netsybetsy · 15/09/2020 16:06

Sounds like a great name for a waxing salon Grin
