Every time you refresh the page you’re presented with a picture of a person. But none of the people are real. The thought of the manipulation and repercussions are mind-boggling to me. It makes me really uncomfortable.

The computer has to generate everything, including the background. Sometimes it gets the background plausible, usually when it's something vague or blurry, and sometimes it gets a background very, very wrong, most often when it is something that we can almost recognise.

It doesn't "know" that it's drawing another person in the background, so it can't apply the same rules as it does to the main face - it just has to guess what pixels should go next to each other and the result is a really distorted version of a face

I’m not very ‘techy’, but if the program is shit at generating additional faces, why is it set to generate additional faces?

Surely a program this ‘clever’ could be set simply to generate generic backgrounds without secondary faces in them, given that they’re absolute failures and serve only to highlight the fakery of the images.

The vast majority of faces I got were white, I hardly got any black or asian faces when I refreshed, seems a bit odd? I wonder what the ratio of male to female faces is, or child/adult?

Do the same faces appear again if you refresh enough I wonder?

I agree - which is why the secondary faces are distorted so badly, because the program prioritises mashing/manipulating the ‘main’ face, and the secondary faces are distorted in the process.

Sorry if this has been asked but....how do we know for sure this is computer generated and not genuine photos of people? I guess a reverse google image search would put pay to that though. They all just look so normal, except the eyes which I agree are soulless.

I read that humans are unable to imagine a face from complete scratch, that they will always be an amalgamation of people they already know or have even seen in the street without registering. It's actually very hard for us to picture a totally made up human face. Crazy.

When robots/computers look more and more humanlike and this goes for computer generated images. Its very creepy as these look like genuine photographs of people when they are not real and dont exist.

Then there is the potential to use them for nefarious purposes as i mentioned before people using them for fake accounts to infiltrate private groups and befriend people who believe they are real.

Then there is the whole trippy aspect of if they are not real what do i really look like? Are the photos of me really real or just a computer simulation but maybe you gotta be high to appreciate the last one lol.

I don't find the main faces creepy or understand why they would be but bloody hell the deformed people next to them are going to give me nightmares now!

If someone was an artist and drew someone from their imagination would people find that creepy?
What about characters in video games? None of them are real, do people find them creepy or is it because no human made these images?
