It’s not anything disgusting or dodgy or gross.

Every time you refresh the page you’re presented with a picture of a person. But none of the people are real. The thought of the manipulation and repercussions are mind-boggling to me. It makes me really uncomfortable.

It's creepy because some of them just look ...wrong, somehow.

The weird distortions where there’s part of another person in the picture make me suspicious: if they’re all entirely computer-generated, why is there a distorted second person in the pic? Or is the site taking existing photos of real people and ‘tweakIng’ them, thereby distorting other people in the original pic?

The computer has to generate everything, including the background. Sometimes it gets the background plausible, usually when it's something vague or blurry, and sometimes it gets a background very, very wrong, most often when it is something that we can almost recognise.

It doesn't "know" that it's drawing another person in the background, so it can't apply the same rules as it does to the main face - it just has to guess what pixels should go next to each other and the result is a really distorted version of a face, because not all backgrounds have faces in them and of those which do, the positioning is likely to be much more varied than the main image source pictures would have been.

Yes it will be exactly that. It uses real pictures and 'averages' out the features. Your phone camera will probably do a similar job if you take a panoramic picture, it stitches a series of pictures together and smooths the edges. If you've taken a panorama with a person walking through, you'll have seen the weird distortions happen.

It's not averaging pictures out, it's creating them from scratch. You can read how it works if you look at the text on the site.

It's a bit of a swizz though claiming it creates individual pics for each person if it's showing the same ones to multiple people!

I got a woman with a knobbly nipple heading for her ear. And a bloke looking delighted that he’s heading face first.. somewhere

If it is the same as the horsedoesnotexist (also at the bottom of the page) then it is clear they just take a photo of someone/something and alter it a bit. The horse ones are seriously bizarre.
