Every time you refresh the page you’re presented with a picture of a person. But none of the people are real. The thought of the manipulation and repercussions are mind-boggling to me. It makes me really uncomfortable.

They - the adult ones anyway - all resemble people that we may have seen, eg on TV, in some way but surely that is not uncommon.

I didn't find it creepy but don't really understand what it is about. I'm sure there are many people who paint or draw a generic person from their imagination who bears a resemblance to a real life person or people. So what?

Thanks for the explanation op - someone was putting these on twitter and I assumed it was a someone’s way of bringing attention to people who had died or were missing and as far as public were concerned, they didn’t exist, but now I know they’re not real that makes me feel a bit better.

It is a bit different to a person drawing a picture - it's an AI doing it so it's basically a computer deciding how to make a picture - from pixels.

That would be less like a person drawing with a pencil on paper, but a person deciding to make a massive mosaic, without a reference design, just out of their head, and make it look realistic.

That's why the backgrounds are frequently odd and occasionally body parts get shuffled, especially in the animal pictures - the computer isn't as good at determining what made a background look real or weird. They "train" it by sending the images it comes out with to real people and getting them to vote on whether or not it looks like a realistic person. Usually they compare two and get the rating person to decide which is more realistic. The computer then learns what is involved in an image of a realistic person, and what is not.

I'm quite enjoying flicking through looking for the total fails now. I find it fascinating that the animal ones are almost all terrible and the human ones are, on the whole, pretty good. Wonder why.

Yes, that is a bit creepy! I kept getting scared to refresh in case it came up with something gruesome or something.

The person half cut off in the background in this one is most creepy

All the people seem to be white. I did get an Asian lady and she seemed less polished - one of her eyes looked totally wrong. I expect this may also be why they all have really similar teeth.

I am guessing the human one is excellent at drawing white people but with animals they've fed in much more varied source images, different breeds and markings, which is why it isn't as clear about what makes up an image of a horse/cat/dog etc. Dogs must be hardest as the different breeds look extremely different from each other.

I received this unfortunate man who looks a bit like a maniacal killer with two of his victims beside him.

The ones with part of a person next to them are definitely creepy!

I'm in absolute pieces going through the cat pictures.

There are some very odd ones.

The weird distortions where there’s part of another person in the picture make me suspicious: if they’re all entirely computer-generated, why is there a distorted second person in the pic? Or is the site taking existing photos of real people and ‘tweakIng’ them, thereby distorting other people in the original pic?

I have tears rolling down my face and that is not an exaggeration. I don’t know about creepy but it is hilarious.

Things like this really tickle me.
