For thinking my neighbours should not be buying her dog birthday presents ?

I love animals , I really do. I had a dog and one day I hope to have another, so it's not that I don't understand animals are part of a family. They are.

But yesterday was. my neighbours dogs birthday. She's put it on Facebook. The dog was given wrapped gifts. A toy and some edible treats, as far as I can see.

She has a family, so not child substitutes. She treats her dogs well and isn't short of money so it's not as if she's saving up.

She's always celebrated the dogs' birthdays, there's more than one!

But this must be unusual. What is the point?

Why do you care?

VettiyaIruken · 06/09/2020 14:08

I imagine the point is that it is fun.

Shizzlestix · 06/09/2020 14:09

What does it have to do with you?

Bluntness100 · 06/09/2020 14:09

Why would you possibly have an opinion on this? Really what harm is she doing?

TheMarzipanDildo · 06/09/2020 14:09

I always used to celebrate my cat’s birthday and buy him presents. I know it was more for me than him Grin. It’s quite nice and it’s not harming anyone!

ChaoticGouda · 06/09/2020 14:09

If it makes both her and the dogs happy, then I don't see any harm in it? People have spent their money on far stranger things. I'm sure they appreciate being pampered! Smile

i buy my dog presents for his birthday and christmas - not doing any harm

VimFuego101 · 06/09/2020 14:11

I'm guessing the neighbour didn't send you a birthday card?

vanillandhoney · 06/09/2020 14:11

My dog gets birthday and Christmas presents.

What's the problem, exactly?

zingally · 06/09/2020 14:11

Why have you even wasted your time thinking about, and typing this?

It's her dog, she can do what she likes.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 06/09/2020 14:11

What, no cake?

Hope that dog got a cake as well.

ShebaShimmyShake · 06/09/2020 14:11

The point is, she enjoys it and it does no harm. As long as she's not neglecting her kids, why on earth is it an issue?

Oliversmumsarmy · 06/09/2020 14:12

Dcats get Birthday and Christmas presents

As you say they are part of the family

BigusBumus · 06/09/2020 14:12

I buy my 3 dogs new balls and special posh dog food on their birthdays. They also have their own Xmas turkey meal from leftovers on Christmas Day.

Why do you care? Are you just being a judgemental busybody?

SqidgeBum · 06/09/2020 14:12

Are you annoyed you didnt get an invite to the mini party?

GhostCurry · 06/09/2020 14:13

“She treats her dogs well and isn't short of money so it's not as if she's saving up.”

This is the weirdest part of a very weird post.

Ofalltheginjoints · 06/09/2020 14:13

We usually have a little doggy birthday party for ddog, presents, dog friendly cake and some dog friends, he’s a rescue so only has an estimated birthday so we also celebrate his gotcha day as well (more treats).

We do it because we can and he is a much loved part of the family, we get parties so why shouldn’t he?

If it isn’t your thing you don’t have to be involved, we do invite some people to the dog parties but they tend to be close friends/family who also love dogs I wouldn’t be offended if anyone didn’t want to come, it clearly makes your neighbour happy (as it does for us too)

LonginesPrime · 06/09/2020 14:15

She has a family, so not child substitutes

This feels like such a nasty comment to make, OP.

Rhubardandcustard · 06/09/2020 14:15

Ha no not unusual. If you are dog mad like me. Always get my dog birthday and Christmas presents. Dog is part of family and dd loves buying cat and dog gifts why shouldn’t they? Each to their own op- not sure why it should bother you.

Bluntness100 · 06/09/2020 14:15

I buy my friend dog a Xmas present. She gets a New toy and is always a very happy dog when she gets it. Proper excited when I unwrap it for her. So yeah I even wrap it. She jumps about mad excited and then trots off happy with her new toy to sit and play with it. I also buy my friends cat a present. Although at 19 she’s less effusive ....😂

Tell me why this is a bad idea op, why they can’t get presents. ?

Galaxycat · 06/09/2020 14:15

Both cats get birthday and Christmas presents and little gifts throughout the year as well. The way I see it They have such a short life on this earth what’s the harm in spoiling them! Obviously within a healthy limit.

amusedbush · 06/09/2020 14:16

It was my dog’s birthday last month and I bought him a special dinner and a new toy. Yes, I wrap his presents because he likes to open them, though I’ve made a rod for my own back because he also tries to open any parcels I have delivered Grin

My mum buys and wraps Christmas presents for my dog too - he usually gets more than me! She calls him her ‘granddog’ Grin

Moondust001 · 06/09/2020 14:17

I have a family. My dog is a dog and definitely not a substitute for a child or anything else. My dog is treated well. I am not short of money (no idea what relevance that had, but I thought I'd include it anyway). Admittedly, I wouldn't be seen dead on Facebook.

Next Saturday it is my dogs fifth birthday. He will be getting a new monsoon standard raincoat (he loves walks but hates getting soaked); a hammerhead shark stuffed toy; a huge juicy marrow bone; a fluffy elephant; and a birthday walk with his dog best friend.

I thought I'd save you the trouble of having to mind my business by posting the details myself. What other people do is none of your business, not that unusual (i know lots of dog owners who celebrate their birthdays), and frankly, your need to post judgemental posts about other people says more about you than it does about them.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 06/09/2020 14:17

I have 3 kids and 3 dogs - all get birthday/Christmas presents and cake. Mind your business, how is it really anything to do with you?!?
