For thinking my neighbours should not be buying her dog birthday presents ?

I love animals , I really do. I had a dog and one day I hope to have another, so it's not that I don't understand animals are part of a family. They are.

But yesterday was. my neighbours dogs birthday. She's put it on Facebook. The dog was given wrapped gifts. A toy and some edible treats, as far as I can see.

She has a family, so not child substitutes. She treats her dogs well and isn't short of money so it's not as if she's saving up.

She's always celebrated the dogs' birthdays, there's more than one!

But this must be unusual. What is the point?

Where do you get the little doggy cupcakes from? Its my dogs birthday in a few weeks, she would love one!

We do buy her presents for Xmas and birthday and I get birthday and Mother's Day cards from her and I also have children so she is not a child substitute!

@DewdropSnowdrop

So what do you spend your money on?
Hopefully something you enjoy and that other people don’t judge.
She’s putting harmless stuff on Facebook that makes her happy.
Last night I bought a bottle of wine because I fancied a glass with dinner is that ok?

“I didn’t like something I read on Facebook, I MUST go on another form of social media to protest immediately!”

Pathetic

The only thing weird is your thread title - the idea of even thinking about what harmless activities you think your neighbour should and shouldn't be doing, far less posting a thread about it. 🤷‍♀️

I have a parrot. It's my precious princeling's 13th birthday this month (a teenager - where have the years gone??). and he is getting ALL THE THINGS. The red carpet is being rolled out. Grin

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/09/2020 15:03

Rose my dd got them from The Range, 1 each for the dogs.

hapagirl · 06/09/2020 15:04

Our cat gets birthday and Christmas presents. It’s fun and doesn’t hurt anyone.

gamerchick · 06/09/2020 15:04

My friends dogs get treated like this. They get special made cakes as well as a pile of presents for birthdays and Christmas. Doggy meet up party, the works.

It's never occurred to me to have an opinion. I've also been known to get them a pressie, just because. Like they do for my kids.

It doesn't matter OP.

Antonin · 06/09/2020 15:05

We do it because it’s fun. Pets are not overweight for the carefully chosen extra treats do no harm.
Next you will be asking why we give babies too young to comprehend gifts and birthday parties. It’s a natural human instinct to celebrate the life of a loved family member, 2 legged or 4 legged.

hiredandsqueak · 06/09/2020 15:05

Ddog gets a present, a chicken leg and we have a cake with candles to sing to her. She's part of the family so she gets a treat on her birthday and at Christmas. She's a rescue and had had a rough early life we like to spoil her every now and again.

This is one of the cutest paragraphs I have ever read! Smile

Our Ddog's birthday is in March and we started planning it about two months ago Grin

One of her presents every year is allowing her to stare at a particular tree (one she's obsessed with) for as long as she likes.

liverbird10 · 06/09/2020 15:06

These delightful tales of pet birthday celebrations have cheered my miserable arse right up. Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/09/2020 15:06

She obviously enjoys it, it harms nobody and it's nothing to do with you.

DewdropSnowdrop · 06/09/2020 15:08

I genuinely had no idea that people did this!

She's the only one I know.

Would like to see the parrot though!

@Marshmallow91

Last year my dog was up to see what santa had brought before everyone else! He loves unwrapping presents and getting his toys. At the end he collapses into a fluffy ball of happiness in the middle of it all (he also puts them in a pile after having unwrapped them)
Cuteness overload!
FortniteBoysMum · 06/09/2020 15:09

My dogs birthday is 4 days before my sons. We do this. Few treats and a new toy. Same at Christmas. He is part of the family. Has helped my autistic child so much.

Ideasplease322 · 06/09/2020 15:09

This made me think of those death eaters in Harry Potter - the ones who sucked the joy out of everything!

You sound like a hoot OP.

It’s lovely that your neighbour takes pleasure in treating her pets. I am sure she realises they don’t understand the concept.

But she is happy, maybe you should take a leaf out her book, rather than sneering?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 06/09/2020 15:10

@wildcherries You should try giving less fucks about stuff that is absolutely nothing to do with you.

Fewer.

I'm so sorry Grin Couldn't resist..

Weirdly, I'd just placed an order for personalised cat festive stockings before reading this post. My daughter has 2 kittens, whose new stockings will take pride of place alongside my son's cat's stocking and our dog's stocking on the mantel. They will be filled with treats and toys - just as my children's were when they were younger. Wrapped? Probably not, but only because my dog has a fear of noises she can't immediately place (she was a rescue). The dog's birthday is 26th of December, so she'll get an extra present then, as the cats get "posh" food on theirs.

I have children. The cats and dog are definitely not child-substitutes - but they are a huge part of our family, and our daily life together. Why shouldn't we celebrate them, as we do our actual family members, by gifting them things?

heartsonacake · 06/09/2020 15:12

YANBU. I think there’s something wrong; she’s clearly lacking something in her life to be acting like this.

It’s an animal. A pet, yes, but that’s all, and they should be treated as a pet should be; not by owners pretending it’s another child.

Ideasplease322 · 06/09/2020 15:13

I also think the casual comments about people having children so their pets aren’t child substitutes are really, really, really offensive to people who don’t have children.

I don’t have children. My pet isn’t a child substitute.

My horse gets presents in his birthday. This year was a new saddle pad and matchy ears.
