For thinking my neighbours should not be buying her dog birthday presents ?

I love animals , I really do. I had a dog and one day I hope to have another, so it's not that I don't understand animals are part of a family. They are.

But yesterday was. my neighbours dogs birthday. She's put it on Facebook. The dog was given wrapped gifts. A toy and some edible treats, as far as I can see.

She has a family, so not child substitutes. She treats her dogs well and isn't short of money so it's not as if she's saving up.

She's always celebrated the dogs' birthdays, there's more than one!

But this must be unusual. What is the point?

@FlamingoAndJohn

My mother, who is devoid of grandchildren, sends my cat £10 in her birthday card....
Aaw my dog is lucky to also have a generous grandmother!

@DewdropSnowdrop

I never said it was a bad thing, just it's pointless. Treat your animals well at all times and don't project human emotions on them.
Oh stop being a killjoy. It's a bit of fun and in these times, we all need that.
Bluntness100 · 06/09/2020 14:26

Human emotions?

Have you never given a dog a treat, a new toy, a favourite food? Clearly you’ve no idea about dogs.

DoTheNextRightThing · 06/09/2020 14:26

@DewdropSnowdrop it's not pointless if it makes them happy.

DeliciouslyFemale · 06/09/2020 14:26

I put up Christmas stockings for my dog and cats, every Christmas. I used to have nine and their little sticking looked adorable, strung along the mantle. 😁 They also get a special dinner.

DramaAlpaca · 06/09/2020 14:27

I always get presents for my dogs. They have great fun tearing off the wrapping paper. Yes - they can unwrap them, it's all part of the fun.

VodselForDinner · 06/09/2020 14:27

I don’t buy my pets birthday gifts, but literally couldn’t be bother one iota if someone else bought for theirs.

You have very strong idea about what your neighbour should and should not be able to do in her own home with her own money, OP. Is there some kind of backstory there because even taking the time to post this makes you sound quite spiteful and bitter?

SirGawain · 06/09/2020 14:27

@TSSDNCOP

It's fun It's harmless It's none of your business
This ^^

@HowDeeDooDee

My cat used to sign my birthday and Christmas card
Yes, yes, yes!!! Our dog signs the cards with a little message and paw print 🐾

Lots of things in life are "pointless".

Stop being such a joy sucker.

GreenLowe · 06/09/2020 14:28

Projecting human emotions onto them? I've never had an animal, regardless, of species that didn't enjoy a special treat. They're perfectly capable of enjoying a new ball/bone/snack or toy.

QuacksInTheDark · 06/09/2020 14:29

I’m having visions of OP up a ladder in the back garden finger-wagging at the neighbour about how she ‘should not be buying her dog birthday presents.’

LonginesPrime · 06/09/2020 14:29

I have lots of opinions on things that don't effect me directly.

Doesn't everyone?

Yes, but while most people might raise a metaphorical eyebrow, they're unlikely to be so moved by something so trivial as to start a thread on it and draw others into such a non-issue.

Love this!

My mum refers to our dog as her "grand-dog" and last time she came to visit, she made him a bacon sandwich Grin

LemonLymanDotCom · 06/09/2020 14:29

"I didn't think it was 'a thing' to wrap gifts for a pet who can open them and has no concept of birthdays! "
Could say the same of a one year old.

I celebrate ddogs birthday with a present, simply cos it's fun.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 06/09/2020 14:30

OP, is everything okay? Something must be going really wrong for you to care about this.

TSSDNCOP · 06/09/2020 14:30

I have lots of opinions on things that don't effect me directly.

Opinions are like arseholes. Whilst everyone has one, we don't need to hear it.

This...

Hangingover · 06/09/2020 14:30

Oh how I miss watch DDog ripping open his Xmas squeaky Sad

DewdropSnowdrop · 06/09/2020 14:31

Oh good grief. You are all taking this much too seriously.

Neighbour is great. I thought she was bonkers but it's obviously a real thing to wrap pets gifts.

My dog was obviously deprived.

GhostCurry · 06/09/2020 14:32

genuinely curious though OP, what was the reference to saving up about?

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/09/2020 14:33

Leave her be, my lab got doggy b/day cup cake and presents. It was her 1st b/day and no harm done.

For thinking my neighbours should not be buying her dog birthday presents ?
occa · 06/09/2020 14:33

I let my Ddogs eat pizza on their birthday. It's their absolute favourite and they are never allowed human food usually so it's a huge treat.

Stop being so miserable, some people like making a fuss of their pets, and makes not the teeny tiniest bit of difference to you.

bumble79 · 06/09/2020 14:33

Does it matter? I don't really celebrate my dogs birthdays but I have family members and friends that do...
