I love animals , I really do. I had a dog and one day I hope to have another, so it's not that I don't understand animals are part of a family. They are.

But yesterday was. my neighbours dogs birthday. She's put it on Facebook. The dog was given wrapped gifts. A toy and some edible treats, as far as I can see.

She has a family, so not child substitutes. She treats her dogs well and isn't short of money so it's not as if she's saving up.

She's always celebrated the dogs' birthdays, there's more than one!

But this must be unusual. What is the point?

My dogs get wrapped birthday and Christmas presents. Yes, they are dogs but enjoy new toys and treats. They get very excited ripping open the paper!
Makes them happy, makes me happy.

If that makes me bonkers I'm ok with that.

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/09/2020 14:45

Our old dog for her last birthday (And we knew it was the last, she died 5 days later)...

McDonalds breakfast, extra hashbrown.
Cocktail sausages.
Sqeaky toy (we never normally have them as they send one of the others mental but she loved them and loved to de-squeak them!)
Cake.
Chocolate hobnobs.
Walk that went wherever she wanted it to go.

It is Dlurchers birthday tomorrow, he's 7. He would like a cheeseburger. He shall have one.

Couldn't give a shit if you think AIBU, my dogs, my money, my business.

Perhaps it was all the loud music that was played at the party & maybe the neighbour broke Covid regulations by having a few friends there.
There's nothing worse than rowdy, drunk canines vomiting in your garden, using your garden wall as a latrine, shouting absolute rubbish & then deciding to have a lie down in the middle of the road & possibly a few fisty paws as well 😂
Perhaps should have called the Pawlice 🤣

VettiyaIruken · 06/09/2020 14:45

Exactly, Molotov. The point is that the people doing it enjoy it.
As points go, it's a good one.

ColleagueFromMars · 06/09/2020 14:48

@WiddlinDiddlin she sounds like a huge loss to you. I'm so glad she has a great last birthday with you!

Mine didn't get birthday presents but she does get Christmas presents and a birthday and gotcha day Facebook post and special dinner Grin

Last year my dog was up to see what santa had brought before everyone else! He loves unwrapping presents and getting his toys. At the end he collapses into a fluffy ball of happiness in the middle of it all (he also puts them in a pile after having unwrapped them)

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 06/09/2020 14:51

It's absolutely nothing to do with you ! Are you always so miserable and nosey? Hmm

Centaurpede · 06/09/2020 14:53

Of course YABU! It's got nothing to do with you!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 06/09/2020 14:53

What a strange thing to think about! Especially as you say you have been a dog owner/ lover
I buy my dog birthday and Christmas presents just because I love him
I don't pamper him or think of him as a baby( I have human sons!) He's my best friend

2andahalfpints · 06/09/2020 14:53

Our dog gets birthday and Christmas presents! We have 3 dcs.

Research shows that dogs do get excited unwrapping a present and ours certainly does 😊

Dandelionflower · 06/09/2020 14:53

It's my dogs 1st birthday two weeks before Christmas? I've said to him he'll get a presents for both even though it's close together. I have considered a joint, bigger present, maybe a bed as he would just eat it just now, but it's not his fault his birthday is close to Christmas Grin

The presents will be wrapped, he may even be wearing a birthday hat... Blush Grin

Suzi888 · 06/09/2020 14:56

I buy my dog presents too, otherwise he opens the family gifts Grin
I know someone who hates seeing photos of people’s kids all the time, back to school posts and Christmas present showing off photos etc

nitsandwormsdodger · 06/09/2020 14:56

We need s laugh these days
I celebrated my dd half birthday in lockdown as something for my eldest dd to do and get excited about and we had a full funeral for a goldfish including hymns and. Poems and flowers
Just something to do and something bit different to put on Facebook

HandfulofDust · 06/09/2020 14:57

Well I mean obviously the dog doesn't care that it's their birthday but if the humans get some fun out of it (and the dog probably likes the treats) why not?

wildcherries · 06/09/2020 14:57

You should try giving less fucks about stuff that is absolutely nothing to do with you.

ilovemyrednosedaymug · 06/09/2020 14:57

YABU. The point is that it is a bit of fun? We celebrated the cat's birthday when DC was younger, as DC chose to make a card and wrap up a cat toy etc.

At Xmas we always buy my parents dog a new toy and sometimes a fancy dress outfit. He looked spectacular in the Mermaid outfit that DD chose for him one year.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 06/09/2020 14:57

We always had and still have wrapped presents for pets under the Christmas tree😂
And we do all that
"Oooh, look at that! Who is it for? You! Who's the good dog/cat/bird? You are!" While unwrapping it. 😂

beautifulxdisasters · 06/09/2020 14:58

What is the "point" of buying anyone a present?

Presumably to give the giver and receiver pleasure - why can't that apply to a dog too?!

Live and let live I say! It's nothing to do with you really is it?
