For thinking my neighbours should not be buying her dog birthday presents ?

I love animals , I really do. I had a dog and one day I hope to have another, so it's not that I don't understand animals are part of a family. They are.

But yesterday was. my neighbours dogs birthday. She's put it on Facebook. The dog was given wrapped gifts. A toy and some edible treats, as far as I can see.

She has a family, so not child substitutes. She treats her dogs well and isn't short of money so it's not as if she's saving up.

She's always celebrated the dogs' birthdays, there's more than one!

But this must be unusual. What is the point?

What do you mean by "should not", here, OP?

Do you think the dogs are being harmed by this?

HowDeeDooDee · 06/09/2020 14:17

If this is even true I hope you sent doggy a card

DewdropSnowdrop · 06/09/2020 14:18

Whoah! Calm down.

Nothing to do with me at all but every year I'm baffled.

I didn't think it was 'a thing' to wrap gifts for a pet who can open them and has no concept of birthdays!

Maybe I should have changed the wording on post

Most of Mumsnet buy their pets gifts?

I don’t celebrate or often even remember pets’ birthdays...

But why would I care whether someone else does?

TSSDNCOP · 06/09/2020 14:19

It's fun
It's harmless
It's none of your business

No. Most of MN just dont see why people cant give their dog presents if they want to. Its not harming anyone.

Seriously? From someone who started a mad post saying her neighbour shouldn’t buy presents for her pets, Made a nasty comment about child substitution and then a weird one about Saving up and having money?

Seriously ? 😂😂😂

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/09/2020 14:20

I don’t know when my cat’s actual birthday is so we celebrate her adoption day.
We don’t have a family so I’m hoping that’s ok.

DewdropSnowdrop · 06/09/2020 14:21

Or

am I usual in not buying my pets gifs?

I clearly don't get it.

I have lots of opinions on things that don't effect me directly.

Doesn't everyone?

I do. And they club together to get me a birthday card.

jessstan2 · 06/09/2020 14:21

Not your business. I used to do it sometimes with my cats, not exactly a celebration but would buy something special for them if I remembered their birthdays and always at Christmas. It was just a bit of fun and hurt no one. I'm not mean to needy people btw, it wasn't either/or.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/09/2020 14:21

I’d guess she does it because she enjoys it, @DewdropSnowdrop - maybe that will unbaffle you.

We buy things for our dog - we get pleasure from seeing her enjoy a new toy. It really is that simple.

netsybetsy · 06/09/2020 14:21

I don't think it's as unusual as you think OP.

Have you SEEN the stuff you can buy for dogs for their birthdays and Christmas?! Grin

My dog has recently celebrated his 5th birthday. He loved it all. He's a whizz at unwrapping presents. He has relatives in Oz who sent him gifts and cardsGrinGrinGrin

No, not with this sort of petty shit op, no.

What a weird thing to give a shit about.

It’s not that it doesn’t effect you directly but it doesn’t effect anyone.

If she was doing this while her children were bare foot and wearing rags you’d have a point but as it is you say she can afford it.
It is literally harming no one.

Your are not unusual.

People do have opinions on all sorts of things but I wouldn't have considered this issue to be something that would concern you seriously and hardly worth voicing.

If your neighbour has children, they will enjoy it.

GreenLowe · 06/09/2020 14:23

I regularly buy my pets toys and treats. Why wouldn't I? They enjoy them. I only wrap them at Christmas though because I hate wrapping.

HowDeeDooDee · 06/09/2020 14:24

My cat used to sign my birthday and Christmas card

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/09/2020 14:24

My mother, who is devoid of grandchildren, sends my cat £10 in her birthday card....

DewdropSnowdrop · 06/09/2020 14:24

I never said it was a bad thing, just it's pointless. Treat your animals well at all times and don't project human emotions on them.

Quite right too! Mine used to buy my husband a birthday card but they forgot mine :-). I didn't get upset about it though.
bestofme21 · 06/09/2020 14:25

What on earth has this to do with you!!?? It's not unusual or pointless.

We make or buy a birthday cake for our dog. He gets treats and presents wrapped up, he loves ripping paper and he knows it's just for him. He has no idea it's his birthday but he knows it's slightly different to all the other days when we spoil him.

LabradorGalore · 06/09/2020 14:25

It’s not weird to celebrate a pets birthday. What is weird is to be upset someone else is going to the trouble of celebrating their pets birthday. Why do you care?

Also our DD has planned quite an elaborate birthday for our dog. She’s a child and as all of our birthdays were in lockdown she is rather excited about it. It’s not harming anyone and giving her a little excitement in a very shitty year.
