To think that garlic bread is a stupid side for pizza

Here, have some bread and cheese to eat next to your bread, tomato and cheese.

OK, the takeaway places have been doing this forever, and they must do it because people will buy and eat it, not that I understand why. But OH and I were recently at a familiar high-street chain Italian restaurant probably best known for pizza and pasta, and three out of seven side options were forms of garlic bread - and the rest were variations on fries! No salad, no roasted veg, not even slaw. If this were not poor enough, eight (8!) starters were bread-based too, another was merely olives (which I love but they're a nibble, not a starter) and the bread-and-cheese-free one I wanted and had been looking forward to all afternoon was sold out. Perhaps no wonder.

I moaned at them about all this, and their lame excuse was that it's a reduced menu post-lockdown. Fine, but other restaurants are offering reduced menus too - still with variety. I'm not an Olympic swimmer and don't need to carb-load like one so ... reduce the feckin' stodge?

Yes it's nuts. Don't understand it either

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 05/09/2020 14:02

YANBU
I've never understood it either

Aquamarine1029 · 05/09/2020 14:07

I'm with you. It's madness.

UnderperformingSeal · 05/09/2020 14:08

@moomoomummy I'd actually have preferred nuts.

Never understood the garlic bread as a side thing! I do occasionally have it as a starter if I'm having something non-bread based as a main though

FlySheMust · 05/09/2020 14:12

Garlic bread is NEVER stupid.

rosiethehen · 05/09/2020 14:12

They probably do it because it's cheap and easy.

Blueemeraldagain · 05/09/2020 14:13

I love garlic bread but have often thought it’s an odd side to pizza.

Hardbackwriter · 05/09/2020 14:13

The thing is, garlic bread is so delicious that I'd eat it with anything. I recently had a revelation, though, and now we have takeaway pizza I have just sides and a slice of DH's pizza, as I realised I saw the pizza as a necessary bit to get through to have sides, but it's hardly like the pizza was making it a healthier meal... One upside of social distancing is that eating an entire garlic bread to myself feels like less of a social faux pas for the next day!

I do think YWB a bit U to 'moan at' the staff in a chain restaurant about the menu - by all means write to head office (though I strongly suspect that they picked the most popular items for the reduced menu, so I think you might just be in the minority and so not go there if you don't like it) but what did you think your waiter could do about it?

seayork2020 · 05/09/2020 14:13

Yes i have never worked the logic

MikeUniformMike · 05/09/2020 14:14

Just don't bother with the pizza and have garlic bread instead.

Hardbackwriter · 05/09/2020 14:14

Also, side salads at that kind of restaurant are always really disappointing and overpriced, which is probably why it isn't that popular and didn't make it onto the reduced menu cut.

Daisydoesnt · 05/09/2020 14:15

I've never got garlic bread full stop. There are so many delicious things in the world to eat, why waste a meal on loads of stodgy bread with melted garlic butter on it. It must have next to zero nutritional value (unless if you're carb loading i suppose). I just don't get it!

LongPauseNoReply · 05/09/2020 14:16

It’s just as stupid as chips or salad served with lasagne which is a dish in its own right.

News just in, different people like different foods?
MikeUniformMike · 05/09/2020 14:16

I sometimes have garlic bread but other don't realise that it's mine and they expect me to share it.

Daisydoesnt · 05/09/2020 14:18

But what's the attraction; it's just one flavour: garlic. That's it. It's a one note wonder.

At least pizza has lots of different flavours (according to what toppings you go for).

sillybean · 05/09/2020 14:19

Mmm carbs with my carbs... sounds ideal to me.

Fresh produce which doesn't keep isn't going to be the the most profitable starter/side in the current climate for the kind of restaurant you describe.

vanillandhoney · 05/09/2020 14:19

I had a cheesy garlic pizza for my dinner last night.

No regrets Grin

Daisydoesnt · 05/09/2020 14:20

@Hardbackwriter yes i get that - but it's so one dimensional. There are lots of dishes or ingredients that have garlic in them (which I love by the way), so why choose something with just that one flavour?

Each to their own.

Hardbackwriter · 05/09/2020 14:20

I think it's one of the most annoying things on MN - and I see it all the time - that so many people don't just say 'I don't like this food' they feel compelled to explain why no one should like it and why liking it is the inferior choice. I don't know anyone in real life who does it.

ZooNaNa · 05/09/2020 14:22

Absolutely love garlic bread, but agree - not as a side to pizza.

I’d have it with pasta l, though, so I’m not against carbs with carbs, just not into bread with bread.

I don’t really understand fried chicken as a side to pizza on takeaway menus, either.

ASandwichNamedKevin · 05/09/2020 14:22

YANBU, it makes no sense to me to eat garlic bread with pizza.
If I order a takeaway pizza if I want sides I'd want one of the chicken options, not garlic bread or very meh potato wedges.

ThePlantsitter · 05/09/2020 14:22

It doesn't make sense. It doesn't make sense with lasagne either. But it's still bloody delicious, that's the problem.

JadesRollerDisco · 05/09/2020 14:23

I like it with things that have enough sauce, like pasta dishes. But with pizza it's too much stodge and not enough sauce. Sometimes we order dominos and just get the garlic bread pizza and chicken, no pizza at all.
