To think that garlic bread is a stupid side for pizza

Here, have some bread and cheese to eat next to your bread, tomato and cheese.

OK, the takeaway places have been doing this forever, and they must do it because people will buy and eat it, not that I understand why. But OH and I were recently at a familiar high-street chain Italian restaurant probably best known for pizza and pasta, and three out of seven side options were forms of garlic bread - and the rest were variations on fries! No salad, no roasted veg, not even slaw. If this were not poor enough, eight (8!) starters were bread-based too, another was merely olives (which I love but they're a nibble, not a starter) and the bread-and-cheese-free one I wanted and had been looking forward to all afternoon was sold out. Perhaps no wonder.

I moaned at them about all this, and their lame excuse was that it's a reduced menu post-lockdown. Fine, but other restaurants are offering reduced menus too - still with variety. I'm not an Olympic swimmer and don't need to carb-load like one so ... reduce the feckin' stodge?

Garlic pizza bread with pizza is even more strange. I love garlic bread - but have it with pasta.

Rhine · 05/09/2020 15:41

I’ve never thought about it before, but I suppose it is.

StrawberrySquash · 05/09/2020 15:44

@LongPauseNoReply

'It’s just as stupid as chips or salad served with lasagne which is a dish in its own right.'

Salad makes sense as it helps cleanse the palate. It's my standard alongside lasagne.

But fully agree on the pizza thing. Fine if we're sharing a few at someone's house, but in Pizza Express why would I want a whole pizza and a garlic bread? It's so frustrating when GB or dough balls are the only starter options on those set menus. And I saying this as a garlic bread and carb lover. I just have my GB with things like soup.

In spite of my love for anything flavoured with garlic I don't really understand eating garlic bread with pizza either, though I love it with pasta but each to their own.

LadyCatStark · 05/09/2020 15:48

If it’s garlic pizza bread, I’d rather skip the pizza and just have the garlic bread!

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 05/09/2020 15:49

I totally agree. Garlic bread is lovely but its like,

"here's a side of bread, for your main meal of MORE BREAD"

who the fck thought that up I wonder? someone who really likes bread I guess!

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 05/09/2020 15:51

I've never understood it either! I do like garlic bread but not with pizza, I wouldn't have a crumpet as a side to toast. Very slim DH loves lasagne with garlic bread AND chips, he refuses salad although he eats it with other meals and says it's weird to have lasagne with salad....

GabsAlot · 05/09/2020 16:00

i agree have some bread with your bread

makes no sense

RuffleCrow · 05/09/2020 16:01

Yabu. Carbs and cheese are the perfect accompaniment to carbs and cheese. This is the way Brits and Americans bastardise continental european food. Acceptance is the way forward - or just send it this way Grin

Thehop · 05/09/2020 16:02

YABVVU

garlic bread is always a good idea

99victoria · 05/09/2020 16:02

The one that gets me is Fishcakes with chips. So potato with potato then!

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 05/09/2020 16:07

There is no such thing as too many carbs.

SquidwardTortellini95 · 05/09/2020 16:14

I love garlic bread, but I agree it's a weird side dish to have with pizza. I'll have it as a starter or side if I'm having a non bread based main like pasta ect.

Serin · 05/09/2020 16:16

Which do you think the restaurants make more money on? A starter of scallops/prawns/ charcuterie or a bit of dough with bit of garlic on?
The mark up is mad! that's why the restaurants do this.

viques · 05/09/2020 16:18

@Londonmummy66

I was in ASK yesterday and they have a new carb loading dish. A large sausage meat ravioli inside a burger bun served with fries. Carbs + carbs + carbs. You could round it off with chocolate gnocchi filled with nutella with chocolate dipping sauce. Makes me feel bloated just to think about it.
I was once tempted to have "chocolate " pasta for a dessert. I thought it would be delicious creamy milk chocolate pieces cunningly shaped into tagliatelle or penne shapes with ice cream or a vanilla sauce.Maybe with hazelnut caramel crunchy bits sprinkled on the top.

It wasn't. It was chocolate flavoured pasta.

cologne4711 · 05/09/2020 16:19

My son used to have garlic bread, pizza and then some breadsticks with something to dip them in combination for pudding. Bread, bread and bread Grin

I did think it was funny at school though when we were in the canteen and a friend opted for a baked potato and chips! However, I do like a chip butty, so I'm not much better :)

SuzieCarmichael · 05/09/2020 16:20

I agree. But the question then arises - what DO you eat garlic bread with? I like the idea of minestrone as a PP suggested. Steak or chicken I guess, instead of potatoes? What other options are there?!

thenightsky · 05/09/2020 16:21

I went out to a chain pub yesterday for lunch. Chose chicken Marsala. It came with: bowl of rice, a poppadom and a full size naan. I thought they'd made a mistake.

UnderperformingSeal · 05/09/2020 16:25

@viques Years and years and years ago I somewhere found a tin of macaroni pudding, I think by Ambrosia (the rice pudding people). I loved both macaroni and Ambrosia rice pudding, so what could possibly go wrong?

It was - how can I put this? - disappointing.

Never saw it again.

It's good with cauliflower cheese.

Actually that reminds me, I am always amazed on the What are you having for Christmas lunch threads (I know, a bit early, sorry) that lots of people apparently have cauliflower cheese with a traditional Christmas turkey dinner.

If you will excuse me, I need to go and hide before the "what's wrong with that then" posts start.

Butterflyonmyshoulder · 05/09/2020 16:28

All I can think about is the Peter Kay bit about garlic bread now Smile

Lilyargin · 05/09/2020 16:30

Couldn’t agree more. I hate this. No wonder so many Britons are overweight. Also, people copy this and do it at home now.

SuzieCarmichael · 05/09/2020 16:32

Thanks viques that sounds like it could work ...
