To think that garlic bread is a stupid side for pizza

Here, have some bread and cheese to eat next to your bread, tomato and cheese.

OK, the takeaway places have been doing this forever, and they must do it because people will buy and eat it, not that I understand why. But OH and I were recently at a familiar high-street chain Italian restaurant probably best known for pizza and pasta, and three out of seven side options were forms of garlic bread - and the rest were variations on fries! No salad, no roasted veg, not even slaw. If this were not poor enough, eight (8!) starters were bread-based too, another was merely olives (which I love but they're a nibble, not a starter) and the bread-and-cheese-free one I wanted and had been looking forward to all afternoon was sold out. Perhaps no wonder.

I moaned at them about all this, and their lame excuse was that it's a reduced menu post-lockdown. Fine, but other restaurants are offering reduced menus too - still with variety. I'm not an Olympic swimmer and don't need to carb-load like one so ... reduce the feckin' stodge?

My favourite lasagne side is potatoes boiled, then covered in cheese and nutmeg and then cooked in the oven.

I love carbs, but I don't get the point of garlic bread with pizza.

AuntyPasta · 05/09/2020 15:07

I have tenderstem broccoli with lasagne. Now I’m hungry.

iheartwinter · 05/09/2020 15:09

@Daisydoesnt At least pizza has lots of different flavours (according to what toppings you go for).

I only ever get cheese and tomato! Imagine!

Londonmummy66 · 05/09/2020 15:13

I was in ASK yesterday and they have a new carb loading dish. A large sausage meat ravioli inside a burger bun served with fries. Carbs + carbs + carbs. You could round it off with chocolate gnocchi filled with nutella with chocolate dipping sauce. Makes me feel bloated just to think about it.

AdaColeman · 05/09/2020 15:13

I've never understood garlic bread as a starter or a side, too much stodge and not visually interesting.
From the restaurant's point of view though, it's cheap, quick & easy, prepared ahead or bought in, kept frozen till ordered so never any waste, so all helping to make them a profit.

Potato skins are another starter that baffles me, greasy stodge to fill you up, when I think a starter should be light, with interesting flavours to get your appetite sparked up before the main course.

Lockdownseperation · 05/09/2020 15:15

It’s super cheap to make so has high profit margins. In pizza express kind of places they are already making the dough so it’s not much effort. But I agree from the view of the person eating it’s a bizarre choice.

Jenasaurus · 05/09/2020 15:18

I like garlic bread with an Italian pasta dish like lasagne as I use it to mop up the sauce but I agree to much bread with pizza

AuntyPasta · 05/09/2020 15:18

I really hate dough balls. At least garlic bread makes an effort.

My DD loves ravioli, this sounds her type of dish, but she is on a health kick at the moment so it will have to wait

That is serious stodge!

jessstan2 · 05/09/2020 15:21

I suppose it is in a way though I like garlic bread which is easy enough to make as long as you have the ingredients.

With pizza it is a meal consisting of dough which doesn't make sense. Having it with bolognese or chili is fine.

Cloudmonkey · 05/09/2020 15:22

Agreed and feel the same when it’s a side to any form of pasta dish as well!

Deadringer · 05/09/2020 15:23

I don't eat garlic bread with pizza, but everyone else in my family likes to. I eat it with pasta though, and i like potato/chips with lasagne, which i know is a no no for lots on here.

DonaldTrumpIsOnlyForNow · 05/09/2020 15:25

Meh. It must sell, a lot. If it didn't, they wouldn't have it on the menu.

Peachy1381 · 05/09/2020 15:25

With you OP. It makes no sense. Pizza is bread!!! Garlic bread is bread!!! Hmm

Yeahnahmum · 05/09/2020 15:26

You are so right 😂

Mummadeeze · 05/09/2020 15:26

All bread is the devil’s spawn to me... I only have to look at it to put on weight. So yes, I totally agree. I very occasionally have one or the other but would not eat them together.

WhatsGoodForTheGoose · 05/09/2020 15:28

But what's the attraction; it's just one flavour: garlic. That's it. It's a one note wonder.

I'd eat my Firstborn if they'd been smothered in garlic butter.

AriesTheRam · 05/09/2020 15:28

Its unacceptable as its only double carbs.Lasagne, chips and garlic bread is the ultimate triple carb combo 😋

AriesTheRam · 05/09/2020 15:29

@Whatsgoodforthegoose 🤣🤣

TorgosPizza · 05/09/2020 15:33

This is why we never have the garlic bread. If we need a side, we'll make it ourselves.

hammeringinmyhead · 05/09/2020 15:34

YABU, because salad is disgusting, but YANBU because I also avoid a bread side/starter. I am a fan of the humble garlic mushroom or arancini.

TorgosPizza · 05/09/2020 15:36

In Sweden, they serve something called "pizza salad" (pizzasallad) as a side. It's some type of slaw dish/cabbage salad. I hate slaw so have never tried it, but at least it's not bread served as a side for bread!

BreconBeBuggered · 05/09/2020 15:38

See, this I can understand, provided the lasagne's nice and saucy and the chips are lovely and crisp. Garlic bread with pizza is just boring and not worth the calories. I only eat garlic bread as a dipping tool, though. I just wouldn't want to pay for bread plus bread when I have perfectly good bread at home, and more interesting things to have with it.
rattusrattus20 · 05/09/2020 15:40

far from my idea of a good complement but, y'know, different people like different things.
