To think that garlic bread is a stupid side for pizza

Here, have some bread and cheese to eat next to your bread, tomato and cheese.

OK, the takeaway places have been doing this forever, and they must do it because people will buy and eat it, not that I understand why. But OH and I were recently at a familiar high-street chain Italian restaurant probably best known for pizza and pasta, and three out of seven side options were forms of garlic bread - and the rest were variations on fries! No salad, no roasted veg, not even slaw. If this were not poor enough, eight (8!) starters were bread-based too, another was merely olives (which I love but they're a nibble, not a starter) and the bread-and-cheese-free one I wanted and had been looking forward to all afternoon was sold out. Perhaps no wonder.

I moaned at them about all this, and their lame excuse was that it's a reduced menu post-lockdown. Fine, but other restaurants are offering reduced menus too - still with variety. I'm not an Olympic swimmer and don't need to carb-load like one so ... reduce the feckin' stodge?

YANBU, salad goes amazingly with pizza. I love the Pizza Hut buffet salad for this reason.

I do love cheesy garlic bread but the type that Pizza Hut / Dominos make is quite cardboardy.

@ZooNaNa

Absolutely love garlic bread, but agree - not as a side to pizza.

I’d have it with pasta l, though, so I’m not against carbs with carbs, just not into bread with bread.

I don’t really understand fried chicken as a side to pizza on takeaway menus, either.

I agree with you on not having bread with bread but happy to have different carbs.

The chicken poppers are a bit of protein to balance my pizza carbs!

In Italy once our Italian friend ordered dessert for us after having pizza. It was a Nutella pizza.
Too many carbs....

Skyliner001 · 05/09/2020 14:25

I totally agree with what you're saying, but I also love it 😊

SeasideMaiden · 05/09/2020 14:25

A PP gives me the idea that from now I might just order myself a garlic bread when my family have pizza.

honeygirlz · 05/09/2020 14:26

Yes, lasagne with garlic bread seems to go better for some reason. Carb overload.

That’s like the pizza dessert that Goodfellas does? Never been tempted by it.
Crystal87 · 05/09/2020 14:30

It's too stodgy and filling. By the time I've ate the garlic bread I can't eat much of the pizza and I can normally eat loads of other stuff. It's because it's all bread.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 05/09/2020 14:31

I'm with you but even more so where dough balls are concerned! WTF?? Just why??? have some plain dough to go with your pizza dough and your garlic bread dough. MAD!

As it is, I can't eat any of it most places any more unless they do a nice gluten free one, and pizzas are tricky because I can no longer eat tomato in any form either.

UnderperformingSeal · 05/09/2020 14:35

@Hardbackwriter I actually moaned at the customer services department via their website, not at the in-house staff.

Pizza with garlic bread and dough balls. Bleurghhh. My waistband feels tight just thinking about it.

I LOVE carbs, but not so much dough in one sitting.
It’s like having a baked potato with a side of chips and mash.

FallingOffTheBed · 05/09/2020 14:36

Oh nutella pizza is great! We had it once on holiday and it came with fresh strawberries.

I do not understand chips and garlic bread with everything at all. But I am not very carby (not that you would know it considering I am 4 stone overwight).

UnaCorda · 05/09/2020 14:38

@LongPauseNoReply

It’s just as stupid as chips or salad served with lasagne which is a dish in its own right.
Chips, I agree, but I don't see what's wrong with serving a side salad to go with lasagne.
MJMG2015 · 05/09/2020 14:40

I eat very low carb to control my diabetes. It's a right bloody bore. I'm drooling....

diddl · 05/09/2020 14:41

Wasn't there a pizza place that did half a jacket potato, a slice of pizza and garlic bread?

I think it's Ok every so often.

I quite like a slice of pizza & garlic bread.

I'd rather that than no garlic bread & more pizza.

AnxMummy10 · 05/09/2020 14:42

Yanbu. I would much rather prefer a salad.

Lalapurple · 05/09/2020 14:43

It doesn't make sense but I like garlic bread.

Maybe the reduced menu based on what sells best?

StillCoughingandLaughing · 05/09/2020 14:45

I do think YWB a bit U to 'moan at' the staff in a chain restaurant about the menu - by all means write to head office (though I strongly suspect that they picked the most popular items for the reduced menu, so I think you might just be in the minority and so not go there if you don't like it) but what did you think your waiter could do about it?

Pass the feedback on to the manager - who in all likelihood is supposed to source/collate customer feedback as part of their job?

I don’t understand this attitude that’s developed in the past few years that you must never express any negative comments to waiting or retail staff.

A fresh leafy salad is a lovely contrast to hot pasta, the meat/veg/mushrooms and the hot, rich cheese sauce.
MaggieAndHopey · 05/09/2020 14:53

I absolutely adore garlic bread and have done since I was a nipper, but I agree, it doesn't appeal as a pizza side.

MaggieAndHopey · 05/09/2020 14:54

I often do a salad with a lasagne or other rich pasta bake. I think it's nice!

AuntyPasta · 05/09/2020 14:55

Garlic bread with homemade minestrone is bliss. I’m not a fan of it with pizza but each to their own.

NoProblem123 · 05/09/2020 14:56

YABVVVU.

I was just thinking this. No good for a type 1 diabetic.
formerbabe · 05/09/2020 14:57

I always thought this...it's weird. Even weirder is garlic pizza bread with the actual pizza...so basically two pizzas Confused
