To be sad about Jane Garvey

As if it wasn't bad enough that Jenni Murray announced her retirement from Woman's Hour, now Jane Garvey is leaving too.
I adore Jane - she's fiercely intelligent, hugely funny, empathetic and down to earth.
I'd give a kidney to be her friend and am going to miss her warmth, humour and incisiveness massively.

Jane, is that you?

RomanRita · 04/09/2020 16:08

I feel the same. Very depressing news and I don't need to be any more depressed Shock

nosswith · 04/09/2020 16:16

YANBU. Good people in radio become a part of our lives in a way that tv never can be.

yeOldeTrout · 04/09/2020 16:20

I gather JG is going to host whole new R4 show. JM is retiring?

Cactuslockdown · 04/09/2020 16:29

Oh no! I haven’t been listening as much over the summer so didn’t know about either of them leaving..... Sad

Okbutnotgreat · 04/09/2020 16:31

She will have her own shoe hopefully and maybe do more with Fi Glover, their Fortunately podcasts have been a bright spot in an otherwise gloomy summer.

Tr1skel1on · 04/09/2020 16:32

If you like Jane Garvey look up the Fortunately with Fi and Jane podcast. It's brilliant. Only thing that kept me sane through lockdown.

Tr1skel1on · 04/09/2020 16:32

Cross post!

fruitpastille · 04/09/2020 16:33

I really recommend listening to the Fortunately podcast with Fi Glover and Jane Garvey - then you won't miss her as much!

AnnikaStranded · 04/09/2020 16:33

My heart sinks when I think who they might replace her and JM with.
Probably a bloke.

BillywilliamV · 04/09/2020 16:34

we’ll get a couple of woke new females ( maybe!) it’ll be fine!

BillywilliamV · 04/09/2020 16:35

The Fi Glover/ Jane Garvey podcast is great.

HollowTalk · 04/09/2020 16:36

There's another thread on this somewhere. I'm feeling really depressed about it.

TenDays · 04/09/2020 16:37

Jenni and Jane have been my radio big sisters for so many years - what will I do without them?

TheBitterBoy · 04/09/2020 16:40

I agree, I have always preferred the days Jane is presenting Woman's Hour. And I love Fortunately, glad it's getting a slot on Radio 4 from next year, but I hope it doesn't lose its relaxed chatty style.

ChangeThePassword · 04/09/2020 16:41

Is womens hour any good?

I was recommended it by a friend and tried it twice. Both times they were taking about vapid nonsense. The kind of thing men that don't know women would think women talk about. Once was bridesmaid dresses, I can't remember what the other was. It was a few years ago now. Put me right off trying again.

BurtonHouse · 04/09/2020 16:42

I agree, the podcasts are great and I'm sure the new show will be too. But I love the huge variety of topics on Woman's Hour, and the voices of (extra)ordinary women telling their stories.
I manage to hear it most days on the way to work: it's been such a regular feature of my life for even longer than JM has been on it.
It won't be the same without them. Fingers crossed the BBC get it right with their replacements, although looking at their record with R2 a year or so back I'm dubious.

But here you are on Mumsnet, where bridesmaids dresses have been known to feature from time to time😄.
The edition on Educating Rita earlier this week was terrific; maybe give that a listen.

I will really miss her too. I’ve had some really tough times when listening to JG and JM on the Woman’s Hour has been a soothing balm that made things more bearable.

HollowTalk · 04/09/2020 16:48

Vapid nonsense! That really isn't a good description of WH. What are you interested in, @ChangeThePassword? I'll link you to something you might like.

ChangeThePassword · 04/09/2020 16:49

There's a difference between talking about specific circumstances surrounding weddings, including dresses, and just discussing them in general on a radio show! I promise you, it was dull and did not paint women in a good light, at all, when it comes to weddings.

I do love Educating Rita, so might give that a listen.

picklemewalnuts · 04/09/2020 16:50

Nope. Women never talk about bridesmaids' dresses. Everyone just wears what they want and no one minds. Wink

ChangeThePassword · 04/09/2020 16:55

Vapid nonsense! That really isn't a good description of WH

It's a great description of the two episodes I listened to!

I'm interested in all sorts of things. Books and films and theatre and cycling and politics and people and travel and food and tech and comedy and health. And probably more. Just don't want to listen to people talk about dresses and make up thinking that's what women want to hear about.

It does sound like I was unlucky!

Hmmph · 04/09/2020 16:56

Really sad. I have really enjoyed listening to WH over the last few years. Excellent range of topics, delivered in a sensible, but warm and occasionally humorous way. There is just the right amount of personal stuff (ie “I know from when I had a miscarriage...”) without taking over the subject by making it personal.

I can’t help but think that WH isn’t going to be the same and in a bad way. I don’t want to listen to a 20 year old woke insta star waffling on about their own life :(

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 04/09/2020 16:57

I was interviewed by Jane in wh.. she is genuinely fab.. and EXACTLY the same in air as off air..

Then again I had tea with JM last year while she was researching her new book.. just as fab.

WH will be very different without them.. but really recommend JG's podcast with Fi Glover..
