To be sad about Jane Garvey

As if it wasn't bad enough that Jenni Murray announced her retirement from Woman's Hour, now Jane Garvey is leaving too.
I adore Jane - she's fiercely intelligent, hugely funny, empathetic and down to earth.
I'd give a kidney to be her friend and am going to miss her warmth, humour and incisiveness massively.

I will really miss JG and JM and feel worried about why they left. I'll give
Emma a try though. I'm afraid I agree about Lauren Laverne. I don't listen anymore. I don't like any interviewer who talks over people. I'm looking at you too Evan Davies.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 07/09/2020 10:05

Probably too busy, but Jess Phillips would be a excellent guest presenter.

Also, Sarah Millican - her "Standard Issue" podcast is brilliant.

Okbutnotgreat · 07/09/2020 10:36

Am gutted Emma Barnett will be leaving Radio 5, I like listening to her every morning and who knows who will replace her. I already can’t listen to the afternoon show as I loath the presenter. On the bright side I may be more productive I guess.

MistressMounthaven · 07/09/2020 11:00

Some presenters such as Marisela Fostrup have moved to Times Radio

lljkk · 07/09/2020 12:00

Barnett is much too good for WH. Then again, maybe she'll revitalise WH. Agree Jess Phillips would make WH interesting!

Woofbloodywoof · 07/09/2020 13:17

I like Emma Barnett. I think I may even prefer her to Jane Garvey so I’m very much looking forward to the change. It’s Jenni Murray I’m really going to miss - I hope they find an occasional presenter to fill the role of wise older woman that JM came to embody.

TheNewLook · 07/09/2020 13:36

I find Emma Barnett’s style of presenting to be very confrontational. She comes across as rather annoyed by everyone. Hopefully she’ll feel less like she has to be an attack-dog on WH.

TheNewLook · 07/09/2020 13:39

And she is very left-wing. But then they all are now at the BBC.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/09/2020 13:52

I haven’t listened much for ages - got so sick of their seeming obsession with cancer, and other earnest, worthy and depressing topics.

I once bought a Joanna Trollope novel purely because on about the first page the main character switched off her car radio - because it was WH banging on about cancer yet again! I identified with her 100%.

I see that the new main presenter is much younger, only in her 20s, so I dare say this is the Beeb once again desperate to attract the ‘yoof’ audience, since they’re afraid of all the old faithfuls dying off.

What they don’t seem to realise is that people’s tastes do change, and the radio station you loved at 18 may well be quite different from your favourite at 41.

It remains to be seen whether the new presenter will be strictly instructed to sound super-bright and perky, while dropping every second T, in order to sound more ordinary/common/edgy, however you like to put it.

As are apparently so many Beeb presenters nowadays.

EB is not in her 20s. Not checked but assuming late 30s / early 40s. Agree it could have been a lot worse.

SwedishEdith · 07/09/2020 13:58

And I wonder if Naga will take over EB's slot on 5Live?

VinylDetective · 07/09/2020 14:09

@TheNewLook

Are you for real? She was an absolute Rottweiler with Corbyn, she made Andrew Neil look like a lamb.

Have you even heard of Emma Barnett? She's not in her 20s, nothing to do with a 'yoof' audience, not 'perky' and manages to enunciate perfectly competently, all while presenting Newsnight. She is actually a very experienced journalist and her interview with Corbyn was exemplary.
LonelyFromCorona · 07/09/2020 15:48

Who?

MrsFezziwig · 07/09/2020 16:10

Emma Barnett is 35

BurtonHouse · 07/09/2020 17:09

Emma will fill JMs shoes, in that her style is very journalistic/interrogatory, whereas JG is much more conversational, which I prefer. But it could have been worse.

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 07/09/2020 17:14

I need to listen to today's WH again, as I only caught a few seconds of the decluttering feature.

I think that it is a good move for JG but she's very much a big sister in my mind, so I'll miss her.

lljkk · 07/09/2020 17:17

very left-wing. But then they all are now at the BBC

Except Nick Robinson (former President of the Conservative Party youth group). Peter Allen, who Jane Garvey mentioned on air is (or was anyway) a member of Tory Party. Oh, and Andrew Neil who was a Thatcherite spin doctor. Matthew Parris & Edwina Currie & Portillo who are ex-Tory MPs. And...

The older I get the less I enjoy R4!

Straven123 · 10/09/2020 10:19

The older I get the less I enjoy R4
Why, are you changing or the progs?
I've listened since 1983 (first baby born) - I love the informative stuff-- more or less (statistics), thinking allowed (social science), farming prog (just 15 mins but can be interesting), the media show (great up to date inrerviews), Nick Robinson's friendli-ish interviews with politicians (Arlene Fosters Dad was shot one night when he went out to shut the animals in - he managed to crawl to the house and survived), a good read (random books chosen, not just newly published), inside science etc etc
I skip the news /women's hour - I want to be entertained, not throw myself off a cliff.

Bassettgirl · 10/09/2020 16:29

Well, Jenni Murray was 37 when she started presenting WH.

I have never assumed that Laura Kuennsburg is left-wing.

Love random R4 shows but listen to Zoe Ball in the morning now. This is the fault of the news, not the Today progamme.
