To be sad about Jane Garvey

As if it wasn't bad enough that Jenni Murray announced her retirement from Woman's Hour, now Jane Garvey is leaving too.
I adore Jane - she's fiercely intelligent, hugely funny, empathetic and down to earth.
I'd give a kidney to be her friend and am going to miss her warmth, humour and incisiveness massively.

I was so sad when I heard this earlier. She is a great broadcaster and her style works well on WH. I can't wait to hear what she does next. Her podcast Fortunately is worth a listen too.

IDidntChoseThePondLife · 04/09/2020 17:55

I love Jane Garvey and I love WH. I feel that they speak for me and have my back in a way. I think they'll probably ditch it now, people don't want us having "Women" spaces* any more.

*I would definitely listen to Men's Hour if it existed.

viques · 04/09/2020 18:02

Will they stil be able to call it Woman's Hour or will it turn into some woke pastiche called WeAreAllWomen's Hour.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/09/2020 18:09

People Who May Or May Not Have Assorted Body Parts Hour. Trips off the tongue.

slightchill · 04/09/2020 18:13

Oh no! I wasn't fond of Jenni Murray's voice (sorry I know it is bordering on sacrilegious to say that) but it always sounded to me like she was broadcasting from the bottom of an old pond, and she did a funny thing with the intonation at the end of her sentences, so I was looking forward to being able to turn on Woman's Hour again and listen to Jane with abandon!

I wonder if the powers at be were intent on changing WH in to a different show post Jenni and JG wasn't happy with the proposed format ... or something like that?

I wish Jane well whatever she goes on to do, and will remain an avid Fortunately listener!

I hope she finds a good niche because she is one of the sane, mature, humorous, intelligent voices out there speaking up for us women of a certain age. Go Jane!

WinWinnieTheWay · 04/09/2020 18:13

Please please don't let them put a woke female or a man in. Woman's Hour is my best thing on the radio, I could listen to it all day.

WatershipDown7 · 04/09/2020 18:33

Persons who menstruate Hour.

persistentwoman · 04/09/2020 18:34

Cervix havers hour Sad

BorsetshireBlueBalls · 04/09/2020 18:40

not a fan, actually. I find her stock response, 'but how does this affect women?' a bit lazy - but I'm afraid that's WH all over, so perhaps I shouldn't be surprised. And Jenni Murray is hammy as all hell. I hope that their departures will revitalise the programme, but I fear it won't. It feels like something that is past its sell-by date, like a lot of R4, sadly.

But YABU in any event because she's going to have her own interview jprogramme and her podcast is going to be moved.

noodlezoodle · 04/09/2020 18:42

@IrmaFayLear

It’ll be those young ladies from the podcast who said middle-aged women should shut up and “basically leave”.
I haven't heard this. Who said that?!
cdtaylornats · 04/09/2020 19:03

If the BBC goes through a funding cut Radio 4 will probably go. Nothing commercial is like it so if advertising is needed we will get Radio 1, 2 and possibly 3.

Woofbloodywoof · 04/09/2020 19:07

I used to really like her, but in the last few years she has acquired a sort of affected, sarcastic tone in some interviews. There was an interesting woman on the other morning talking about her grave tending business (which is odd, I grant you but obviously works for some) and I just thought JG had the tone a bit wrong.
I agree with the comment from @AndAnotherUsername

I’m much sadder about Jenni Murray going. I suspect that there will be a move towards radical intersectional feminist going on current R4 form. Basically one must self flagellate if one is cis, white and middle class. (I’m mixed race before anyone construes this the wrong way!) Some have mentioned Munroe Bergdorf - it wouldn’t be too outlandish. I can easily see her, Paris Lees or Stephanie Hirst getting a presenter gig on WH.
I’m not massively opposed to a male presenter though, but that’s only because I’m conflicted about whether we should have WH in 2020. Be interesting to hear other views on that.

BeachLane · 04/09/2020 19:08

Oh no, this is sad. I love Jane and Jenni. I hope it won't be re-targeted at 20 year olds and then in a year's time axed because listeners don't like it any more.

Frazzled13 · 04/09/2020 19:10

Oh no, I didn't realise Jenni was leaving, and now I've found out both at once!
I used to listen to the podcast on my commute so it's slipped a bit in lockdown.
When are each of them leaving?

AnotherTerm · 04/09/2020 19:21

How in the fuck has a thread about Radio 4 managed to turn anti-trans? Is there anywhere you lot don't piss on threads. I deapair of Thai fucking place sometimes.

Yes, you’re right. I heard her be borderline rude to Jenny Eclair recently. Perhaps she’s just had enough of it all.
museumum · 04/09/2020 19:32

That is sad. I just listened to jenni Murray’s book about her weight struggles and the schedule and stress of WH is quite something, despite afternoons “off”.
I quite enjoy the late night WH podcast too and it is more class and race diverse but it’s totally the other end of the age spectrum - very 20something.

nosswith · 04/09/2020 19:40

cdtaylornats keeping Radio 4 and indeed for many people Radio 2 should be a main part of why we should defend the BBC against the insidious attempts to emasculate it. Such as the recent coverage over Last Night of the Proms.

ButNotTonight20 · 04/09/2020 19:44

Just praying she's not replaced by fearne cotton....

BeachLane · 04/09/2020 19:59

I’m conflicted about whether we should have WH in 2020

Because we don't yet have equality, and because there are many issues that are primarily relevant to women or that women have a different perspective on, or where women's contribution normally receives less attention. Most programmes cater for the interests of specific groups - I don't see why WH is criticised for focusing on women when, say, Front Row doesn't get slated for excluding people who don't like the arts.

VestaTilley · 04/09/2020 20:17

I didn’t know she was going to. Is it in solidarity with Jenni it was she sacked?

I am so sick of the BBC at the moment- both woke and misogynistic. What a combination.

BusyDreaming · 04/09/2020 20:20

I enjoy Emma Barnett on 5 Live and dip in and out of WH.
Sorry to hear JM and JG are leaving.

Naga Munchetty and Katya Adler filled in for Emma Barnett recently and they were both impressive.
Naga seemed warmer on radio than on tv, somehow.

Hoping that the new presenters are high calibre, Fearne Cotton would be dire and Lauren Laverne hasn’t filled Kirsty Young’s shoes.
Actually, Kirsty would be great.

As long as it’s not some ‘woke’ nightmare that some male led focus group has come up with.

Goslowlysideways · 04/09/2020 20:23

I’m so sad.

Katinski · 04/09/2020 20:33

Thank you whoever mentioned the Fortunately podcast. I've just spent a glorious afternoon listening to Fi and Jane shooting the breeze - and giggling Grin There's a whole back catalogue for me to listen to, they're releasing a weekly podcast too, so that's my afternoon listening for the foreseeable. Great!

Lowhangingfruit · 04/09/2020 20:55

It feel like I'm a missing a limb I have learned a lot listening the womans hour, such as the realisation of being raped, the support for miscarriages and the benefits of education despite a poor low income household. Let us have a slice of woman only broadcasting. We are nowhere near any sense of equality. :-(
