To be sad about Jane Garvey

As if it wasn't bad enough that Jenni Murray announced her retirement from Woman's Hour, now Jane Garvey is leaving too.
I adore Jane - she's fiercely intelligent, hugely funny, empathetic and down to earth.
I'd give a kidney to be her friend and am going to miss her warmth, humour and incisiveness massively.

I was interviewed by her once, many years ago when she was on Radio Hereford and Worcester. It was the breakfast show so I think I had to be there at 7 am, I had a baby under a year old at the time and had just returned to work from maternity leave and my boss decided I was the ideal person to represent the firm on radio!

She was very kind, it was all going well and I froze and she smiled encouragingly and prompted me. She laughed afterwards and said she thought I was going to lose it but well done that I came back.

I've still got a tape of it but have never listened to it, I'm sure I sound like a moron.

sydenhamhiller · 04/09/2020 17:03

Nooooooooooooo. I heard Jenni Murray was going, and then whispers of her probably not being 'woke' enough. I hoped that wasn't the reason why, but didn't have a real opinion on it.

Jane Garvey as well though - now it feels like a conspiracy! I love her style/ tone. I was a massive Radio 4 fan, but too many repeats, too muck wokeness, too much London-centricity (and I live in London!) means I rarely have it on any more. They seem happy to lose dull middle aged, midde class listeners like me - fair enough - but who are they hoping to attract? Surely I am their demographic? Smile

merrymouse · 04/09/2020 17:04

I was interviewed by Jane in wh.. she is genuinely fab.. and EXACTLY the same in air as off air..

I can imagine that she is just like 'Fortunately' Jane off air, but 'WH' Jane seems a bit more restrained.

oakleaffy · 04/09/2020 17:06

@nosswith

YANBU. Good people in radio become a part of our lives in a way that tv never can be.
So true. I hated it when various 'Archers' characters left/died so don't really listen any more... Women's Hour also has a lot of Men listeners..My DS listen at work.
oakleaffy · 04/09/2020 17:09

Maybe Meghan Markle ?
I hear she's looking for work.

AndAnotherUsername · 04/09/2020 17:10

She has a lovely warm voice and way about her.

I do like WH, but it does take a very biased view sometimes and is all about the hardships faced by women. There are plenty of areas where women have advantages over men too, but these are never discussed.

midsomermurderess · 04/09/2020 17:12

I liked her a lot more than Jenni Murray, less po-faced. As an side, I know 'fiercely intelligent' is, of course a compliment, but I have never seen used about a man.

minnieok · 04/09/2020 17:12

She's got a new show and fortunately is going to be broadcast on radio 4 too. I think it's a case of being happy for her! I too would love to know her in real life, something about her really clicks with me

HollowTalk · 04/09/2020 17:19

@ChangeThePassword Have a look through these episodes.

lottiegarbanzo · 04/09/2020 17:20

I think I'm happy about her being freed from the constraints of WH, to do her new programme. I feel like she's been a little stifled there. The downside is it might not last as long.

KayakingOnDown · 04/09/2020 17:21

I preferred her to Jenni Murray too.

I wonder is she leaving because she wasn't appointed JM's replacement and someone else got it - or because the editorial policy had become too woke.

ChemiseBleu · 04/09/2020 17:23

On no - very sad about this.

I hope it’s not a price paid for speaking up on equal pay.

It’s not clear if the new show will be every day or once per week?

What on earth time of day will Fortunately be broadcastable in its current joyous irreverent form?

Totally recommend it for the real Fi and Jane. You can read A LOT between the lines and how things are said is truly illuminating and makes the trials and tribulations of middle age womanhood less lonely!

On the positive side I would love to hope that this could be the start of Jane getting back into news. Check out her recent stand in shows for Newscast.

And Jane if you are reading - it’s not gone unnoticed by me how easily Adrian Chiles (Jane’s ex husband) has skipped back into a regular show on Five Live - despite his inferior broadcasting skills. I imagine Woman’s Hour is viewed as some sort of genteel backwater by the BBC ‘powers that be’....

ImaSababa · 04/09/2020 17:25

I feared this was going to be about her dying!

I also fear who they'll replace her with. Munroe Bergdorf??

MitziK · 04/09/2020 17:28

@ImaSababa

I feared this was going to be about her dying!

I also fear who they'll replace her with. Munroe Bergdorf??

Ferne Cotton and Claudia Winkleman with Zoe Ball on a Friday, perhaps?

I won't be listening

StatisticalSense · 04/09/2020 17:30

@ImaSababa
I doubt they'll employ Munroe Bergdorf to present women's hour, especially consider the financial pressure the BBC is under. They will probably slot somebody whose current job is being eliminated but who the BBC want to keep into the role so expect someone along the lines of Victoria Derbyshire.

garlictwist · 04/09/2020 17:31

I'm really sad about this. I can't get on with Jenni Murray and always skip the days she presents but love Jane. I think they should get Lauren Laverne or Emma Barnett as replacements.

Lazt · 04/09/2020 17:36

Emma Barnett would be good. Otherwise I despair of what wokefuckery they’ll go for.

Love both JM & JG. Looking forward to JM unleashing her unrestrained views on oh life in general Grin

HazelWong · 04/09/2020 17:39

I will miss Jane Garvey.

I wonder if the replacement will be someone like Deborah Frances White

I don't think this is her sort of thing but I think Sindu Vee would be terrific

WatershipDown7 · 04/09/2020 17:40

Oh no, not Lauren Laverne.! I think she’s ruined Desert Island Discs. It will be some Instagram influencer under 30 most likely. I will stop listening..

TheNewLook · 04/09/2020 17:40

Please not Fearne Cotton!!! It’ll be mental heath and “feeeeeelings” every bloody day.

Lazt · 04/09/2020 17:41

If it’s Deborah Frances White that will truly be the last straw for me with bbc licence

MistressMounthaven · 04/09/2020 17:42

Oh, this is sad.
Goodness knows who can replace her and Jenni. I would imagine someone from a minority group.Fingers crossed they're good.

BurtonHouse · 04/09/2020 17:43

Emma Barnett has her own regular slot on 5Live, which I can't imagine she'd want to give up.
And honestly I'm struggling to think of anyone else, unless there is someone from tv. Victoria Derbyshire is a brilliant journalist but she seems a bit too brisk and matter-of-fact as a replacement for the wondrous Jane.

IrmaFayLear · 04/09/2020 17:44

It’ll be those young ladies from the podcast who said middle-aged women should shut up and “basically leave”.

PatchworkElmer · 04/09/2020 17:48

Oh no 😔
