Essentially she has gaslight,lied and assumed an identity that is not hers. In doing so,other candidates were denied opportunities,remuneration. She has assumed an identity and heritage that was not hers to assume

I’m Jewish and in surveys With an ethnic question I put myself down as “Other” rather than white, which is how I consider myself. I appreciate this is different from identifying as black, but as discussed on this thread people self-identify as Jewish all the time. This whole affair seems to say more about academia (and especially humanities) than anything else....

I read an article about her and others appropriating black. How its cool to be black unless you are black. I don't understand why anyone would do this. But there seems to be so many people that constantly want attention

I find this fascinating. I'll readily admit my own ignorance on this (see upthread!) but do you think it's because of the way being Jewish is both a religious belief and an ethnicity? Presumably people who self id as Jewish are id-ing into the religious belief? Kind of the mirror image of how you get Jewish people who say they don't believe in God but are ethnically and culturally Jewish?

I'm Jewish and white-skinned and I identify as white Jewish. I do understand why Jewish people see themselves as not white, because I have experienced pretty rampant antisemitism in my profession as well as at university. So the Corbynist impression of Jews as an affluent minority that has "made it" and is no longer in need of protection is horribly inaccurate. But at the same time, the fact is that I am white skinned and that confers privileges notwithstanding the fact that I am Jewish. I don't think it would be accurate to say that I have never benefited from white privilege and it feels inaccurate to me to say that I am not white when I am. The way I am discriminated against (when I am) makes me an ally of non-white people but it is not the same thing.
