To be considerably pissed off that somebody has just phoned me at midnight to ask for a telephone number..

Extended family member who isn't very tech savvy has just phoned me after midnight to ask me to send her - her mobile number - because she 'needs' it.

"Hiya sorry to call you so late I know you're sleeping but I really need my mobile number, can you text it to me by the morning"

I just hung up.

I already sent it to her last week at her request now she's lost it again and thinks midnight is an appropriate time to fuck about and ring my phone for trivial things such as this.

I co-sleep with my youngest (1 year) and for that reason have all notifications on silent except for calls because you know, emergencies.

I'm now awake and pissed off.

If you were me would you address this firmly tomorrow or just let it go? She has form for CFery..

YANBU - She is a CF for calling you at that time and waking you up. I’m glad you made it clear in the text it is not acceptable.

The onus is on her to go for some training on computers and using the internet. I would refer her to the Age Uk website, they have training courses (I’m hoping they are still running at the moment) for older people. See link: www.ageuk.org.uk/services/in-your-area/it-training/

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/09/2020 16:49

Because she asked you to text the phone number rather than give it her, she obviously expected to be talking to your answerphone. Why don't you have your phone switched off at night, or taking calls only from VIP numbers?

SerenDippitty · 02/09/2020 17:07

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo

I've just checked and can't find my number anywhere on /in my phone. However I do know my number off by heart as I am an adult
I have my number in contacts under my name, but I put it there myself. It's not under My Number or anywhere in settings.
alexdgr8 · 02/09/2020 19:30

i can see it is annoying, but some of you sound so hard and angry.
as for swearing at an older woman, for the crime of daring to ring at the wrong time, well.
there is a way to speak to people, calm without getting enraged.
assertive communication is the ideal.

Macncheeseballs · 02/09/2020 19:35

I dont sleep with my phone and i put it on air plane mode at night

Malbecfan · 02/09/2020 19:52

You don't have enduring power of attorney for her do you? I do for my dad, and when he does something stupid (but no way as thoughtless as your situation) I threaten to invoke it. It definitely reins him in for a while.

nosswith · 02/09/2020 19:56

I'd address it firmly.

Late night phone calls should only be in cases of illness needing medical attention or if stranded and you can help.

Macncheeseballs · 02/09/2020 20:04

Malbec, no but I'm pretty sure neither do most people who sleep next to their phones

EmmaGrundyForPM · 03/09/2020 02:17

You can't invoke POA if someone has capacity to make their own decisions. It doesn't work like that.

YANBU

She wants you to send her her own mobile number???

Even if she doesn't know how to search the phone, it should be on the paperwork that came with the contract.

What a twit!

honeygirlz · 03/09/2020 06:05

Elderly parents, accidents (them or my DP who works away)

You can allow calls from your Favourites whilst your phone is set to Do Not Disturb. You can set Do Not Disturb to come on automatically e.g. 9pm to 8am.

It’s good you texted her!

MurrayTheDemonicTalkingSkull · 03/09/2020 06:34

This is when you need to use a website called Let Me Google That For You. Incredibly passive aggressive but it always makes me feel better: lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+find+my+own+mobile+number

JonSnowIsALoser · 03/09/2020 18:06

I would address it firmly by phoning her some time between 1am and 5am, if you happen to be awake then, to ask her to take a note of her phone number and stick it to her fridge, because you won't be able to help her in the future.

BlogTheBlogger · 03/09/2020 18:14

Did she reply/apologise?

DdraigGoch · 03/09/2020 18:24

@TantricTwist

Just send it FFS
Do you mean the number or the sweary message?
FelicisNox · 03/09/2020 18:41

I would ring her EVERY day for the next 2 weeks between 3 and 6am and when she answers put the phone down on her.

Honestly, I would have shouted at her "are you taking the fucking piss?!" and then put the phone down.

CF doesn't even begin to cover it.

Endoftether2000 · 03/09/2020 19:11

I guess this relative didn't have a land line that she could ring off her mobile. Once she had done this she could of 1471'd it and the lovely lady at the other end would of told her, her own number 😊

FizzyGreenWater · 03/09/2020 19:19

You were a fool to give her the number!

I’d have texted back ‘Sorry too tired to find it, some rude bastard woke me at 5 am and me and the baby have had a terrible day as a result. Some people really only care about themselves don’t they! Anyway hope you find that number, no point asking me again by the way, I’ve taken a solemn vow to be a stroppy unhelpful cunt from now on. Loving it so far. Don’t call me, I’ll call you. Bye’

Harvestsquirrel1 · 03/09/2020 20:17

Why did you pick up the phone? Just let it ring.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 03/09/2020 20:45

... or "is it the same as last time I texted it to you or have you changed it? What did I think it was last time, Malcolm"

Angrywife · 03/09/2020 21:14

Love how everyone assumes just because their phone has a facility, everyone's must have 🙄
I upgraded my phone last month, my old one was 2yrs old. It didn't have a Do Not Disturb feature on it.

Choccylips · 03/09/2020 23:31

cellotape it to her phone. I did that for a friend that is useless with any tec.

Bl3ss3dm0m · 04/09/2020 08:02

OP, I am a bit confused, as in one post you said that both her mobile phones were 10 years old, if they are they might not be smartphones, which would explain her difficulty with google, but in a later post you said she had a new phone? If she has only just got a smart phone then that could also help to explain some of her problems. However, nothing excuses her waking you at that time of night for her phone number. My guess is that she was buying something online from an advert on social media, and needed her phone number for that, and quite often those type of companies give you a short time in which you can purchase their item at an "amazingly good price" before it goes back to the original price! I hate those "promotions" with a vengence!

Jeeperscreepers69 · 04/09/2020 08:09

Cosleep with a 1 yr old? Is this as new trend?

Ohtherewearethen · 04/09/2020 08:10

@Bl3ss3dm0m - I read it as though the relative has had phones/computers in her life for at least a decade, not that she's kept the same ones all that time.
