JoFan they are a small bendy cup that you insert into your vagina (as easy to get used to as using a tampon). It collects the blood, you remove the mooncup every few hours, tip the contents in the loo, rinse it, and reinsert. It sounds as if it could be revolting, but somehow, it really isn't. People feel evangelical about them as they are so enjoyable to use, save money, clean and eco-friendly, and can reduce period pain and length of menstruation because they don't leach blood and moisture out of you!

moljam · 05/10/2007 22:28

fairy hammocks are cloth sanitry towels.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/10/2007 22:28

scarybee - that may change...I've noted a few mners have accidentally flushed theirs

However, being an eco friendly product, I'm sure it could be put to good use by a hermit crab or something

corblimeycharlie · 05/10/2007 22:28

I am a RL person and I have one and love it. Apart from the ecological advantages, I never have to worry about having bought tampons in advance of my period. I never have to go to the loo in work with a tampon up my sleeve (so reminiscent of school). I never leak and i hasn't cost me anymore money than the £20 I spent on it a year ago.
Each to their own of course but when my DS or DD wants to go surfing in tampon and pantyliner free waters I will be able to look them in the eye.

Jofan, I just tip the contents down the loo,and then wash the mooncup in the sink with soap and water. Every now and then I do a 'deep clean' by boiling it for a few minutes.

But this should answer any questions better than I can!

FrannyandZombie · 05/10/2007 22:30

If you do use tampons or towels, please don't flush them. Wrap them and bin them. Bagandbin

Gingerbear · 05/10/2007 22:30

Hermit crab - lol.
VVV you are on top form tonight my dear.

taffy101 · 05/10/2007 22:31

i don't know any rl people who use them either (except my sis cos i bought her one), but i don't tell people in rl either cos i know what reaction i'll get mostly.
I decided to get one when i was so mortified when our drains were blocked and the dynorod guy opened the manhole and it was FULLLLLL of tampons - yick

shimmy · 05/10/2007 22:31

I'm a RL person too but funnily I don't go round telling other RL people about my menstrual hygiene products. Maybe that's why you don't hear of many people who use them - they all are but they just haven't told you.

chankins · 05/10/2007 22:31

I use reusable nappies and I'm not evangelical about them and I don't tell all my friends who use disposable off for being childish because they don't want to bother. Hey - ho.

JoFan · 05/10/2007 22:31

how far do you insert? as far as a tampon?

have seen them for sale on green websites, but not with adequate instructions. do they last forever?

scarybee · 05/10/2007 22:31

I haven't used mine yet (periods not started since baby). I will probably drop it down the loo first time. I hope a hermit crab finds it if I do as I reckon it'd make a superb starter home

Gingerbear · 05/10/2007 22:33

I dropped mine in the loo on Tuesday.
5 mins boiling sorts it out. (Could never put it in the dishwasher - ours smells of chilli con carne at the moment - which has me wondering - don't mooncups go orange in the dishwasher if you have had spag bol dishes in there too?)

LittleBella · 05/10/2007 22:33

Yes YABU.

People used to think that about all sorts of products. ("Avocadoes? WTF?")

It's just not being used to the idea. If they advertised on TV and were part of the range of products sold in supermarkets, no-one would bat an eylid.

FrannyandZombie · 05/10/2007 22:33

Jo no they sit quite far down, quite near the entrance of your vagina. They last for a long, long time. Maybe not forever, but as good as.

moljam · 05/10/2007 22:34

chankins why do you use reusable nappies?enviroment, cost etc?mooncups and cloth san pro are same thing.

spookthief · 05/10/2007 22:34

There's gold in them thar icky disposible products. Hence Mooncups et al will remain an niche product. Doesn't mean that they are less sanitary and reliable than the mainstream option.

I wish I'd discovered Mooncups when I first started my periods. So much better.

Gingerbear · 05/10/2007 22:34

JoFan - Boots sell them.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/10/2007 22:34

Garlic bread? WTF?

Ok, I am nearly a convert, can you please answer a few questions? and forgive me, this has high blush factor. (bearing in mind I never used tampons, sorry if tmi)

Can you feel it when walking around with it?
How do you empty it without spilling everywhere?
It seriously doesnt leak?

taffy101 · 05/10/2007 22:35

lol about the dishwasher gingerbear!!

JoFan · 05/10/2007 22:36

but if they sit that low down aren't you aware that it's there, when walking for instance?

sorry about all the questions, am genuinely interested in trying one.
