To expect to have a hair do 'to go out with'

Is it just me or am I being unreasonable to expect that when I pay for a cut and blow that my hair should look ready to go on a night out. I have a stacked bob that I can blow dry to be big in height/volume and look ready to go out. Yesterday I paid my money for a cut and blow and the hairdresser used a small barrel brush and I left with fairly flat looking hair, even after I'd said I wanted it to look top heavy/volume etc. Am I just old fashioned (at 48) to expect to look like I've 'just come out of the hairdresser's' and feel my hair looks good or is a cut and blow nowadays basically someone just drying your hair after cutting it.

The only hair dresser I’ve ever got lovely going out blow dry hair from was a Greek lady. I was gutted when she moved back to Cyprus. I never like my hair when o leave the hairdressers i have to do it myself

Lockheart · 30/08/2020 17:36

This is not something that would ever even cross my mind.

If you want the hairdresser to tart your hair up a bit then tell them.

dudsville · 30/08/2020 17:38

I actually think that's reasonable but all I ever get is hair I have to go home and wash straight away.

RunningFromInsanity · 30/08/2020 17:38

Everytime I’ve had a hair cut it’s been the best my hair has ever looked! They always make it look beautiful, a little curl etc

ShagMeRiggins · 30/08/2020 17:39

She did tell the hairdresser. The hairdresser didn’t deliver.

Also, no need to equate height and volume with tarting up, is there? Hmm

VirginiaWolverine · 30/08/2020 17:39

I would expect to leave the salon with hair styled for everyday life unless I'd specifically requested something different.

stayathomer · 30/08/2020 17:40

I'd expect something a bit more glam, yes!

YouStupidBoy · 30/08/2020 17:41

I think part of having your hair cut is that you leave with it looking amazing. My hairdresser always asks me if I want it dried smooth / messily / product / no product etc and I love stepping out feeling good. Until it rains on the way back to the car. Almost guaranteed!!

riotlady · 30/08/2020 17:41

Idk, every hair dresser I’ve been to has always been obsessed with blow drying it as straight and flat as possible or offering to straighten it. My hair is already straight! I like it to have a bit of bounce and movement!

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 30/08/2020 17:43

I expect to leave with going to a restaurant style hair.

Maybe not full night out, but certainly well styled better than day to day hair.

I had a problem for years where hairdressers would just dry my hair really limp and flat. Ive got quite thick volumous hair naturally and Id just leave with this limp, straight malarky. Now curls seem to be more in I leave with nice, bouncy curls. But it can still be a bit flat. I dont want flat hair!

Handbaghag · 30/08/2020 17:43

I also have a theory that in the crap chat and they ask if you're going out tonight, that if you say no, they don't bother

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 30/08/2020 17:45

@riotlady yes! Every hairdresser is obsessed with blowdrying it straight and flat!

As soon as I do my own blowdry it always looks so much better and Im not even any good at blowdrying

Whenwillow · 30/08/2020 17:46

I hate the post hair salon look. I always go straight home and wash it, blast it with hair dryer then run my fingers through it.
My hairdresser knows this, yet she still spends 15 minutes lovingly slathering it with all the bloody 'products' and blow drying it all bouffant. I just let her now as its clearly how she wants me to look when I leave 😂
I always pray that I won't bump into anyone I know between salon and car.

TheHappyHerbivore · 30/08/2020 17:46

Mine always styles mine beautifully at the end of a cut, so YANBU in my opinion. You’d think they would want to show off their handiwork to the best effect. That’s what a blow dry is, isn’t it?!

dicksplash · 30/08/2020 17:47

I almost always schedule hair cuts on a night I'm going out as it looks so good when its done. This last time was the first time I've not due to covid.

hopeishere · 30/08/2020 17:49

My hairdresser gives me a real granny blow dry but I like how he cuts it and it looks fine when I do it myself!

But I agree if a hair cut and and a night out coincide I'm always happy! I joke I like to "take my hair out".

Pikachubaby · 30/08/2020 17:49

I think the fashion is just a bit more sleek and natural

I used to be given big Charlie’s angels layered hair, but these days they just style it straight and swishy
And sometimes I feel disappointed my hair does not look “wow” after a salon visit Grin

I love a hair dresser who sections my hair and dries each section until I have a head of bouncy glam hair

But no, I have not had that for a while either.

Take me back to the 80s and 90s Grin

Or I’ll just do it myself at home

Hairdressers aren’t what they used to be. With Covid and masks, no coffee, no chat (apart from WHAT? Sorry I can’t hear you) no glossy mags, no head massage, the whole thing has become very unexciting

AramintaLee · 30/08/2020 17:51

My hair never looks the way I want it when I come out the salon and even my stylist knows this. She often jokes about how I will go home and "do my thing". No one knows your hair like yourself. I have fine hair but I always manage to make it looks super full and bouncy whereas it always looks super flat when I leave the salon. I've concluded this is because salon shampoos and conditioners just don't work with my hair.

SarahBellam · 30/08/2020 17:53

I hate it. I look like a helmet head. There’s all sorts of gunk in it that I have to wash out before I start to look like me again - that’s probably why I haven’t been for 10 years.

MaudebeGonne · 30/08/2020 17:53

My Mum was a hairdresser in the 80's (had trained in the late 60's so could do amazing beehive updo's). This older woman used to come in, let her long hair out of it's bun, and my mum would do this amazing "set". Big rollers, lots of back combing and laquer. It would look fabulous. And every time she would stick a scarf and bobble hat on top.

D4rwin · 30/08/2020 17:58

Probably is because that's really out of date? I mean I think that's old fashioned and I am 45.

Plussizejumpsuit · 30/08/2020 17:58

Just say how you like it blow dried. I'd be mortified if my hairdresser have me bug volume hair. It's not a massively contemporary look so they can't know what you want they aren't psychic and are probably just going with what they think think is fashionable. So next time just say I like a lot of volume in my blow dry.

vanillandhoney · 30/08/2020 17:59

YANBU. But, my hair always feels really greasy when I leave the hairdressers - I go home and wash all the product out!

SquirrelFan · 30/08/2020 18:05

@AramintaLee Me, too! Flat flat flat. Even if she uses a large brush and sections it. And the fringe is always too short. Would hate to go out after I'd been to the hairdresser!

Squiffany · 30/08/2020 18:08

I always style my hair dead straight and flat. My hairdresser always blow dries it big and bouncy. It makes me look like my mother.

I go home and shower the hairs off and style it flat.
