To expect to have a hair do 'to go out with'

Handbaghag · 30/08/2020 17:33

Is it just me or am I being unreasonable to expect that when I pay for a cut and blow that my hair should look ready to go on a night out. I have a stacked bob that I can blow dry to be big in height/volume and look ready to go out. Yesterday I paid my money for a cut and blow and the hairdresser used a small barrel brush and I left with fairly flat looking hair, even after I'd said I wanted it to look top heavy/volume etc. Am I just old fashioned (at 48) to expect to look like I've 'just come out of the hairdresser's' and feel my hair looks good or is a cut and blow nowadays basically someone just drying your hair after cutting it.

Gosh I don't know, if I ever do go (rare) I always ask them just to rough dry it because I am so fricking bored by then I need to get out!

I suppose if you like it big and you said that, yanbu.

ItsIslandTime · 30/08/2020 18:48

YANBU as you didn’t get what you asked for but did you say anything when you saw that she wasn’t styling it how you wanted. I would have said something.

Frazzled2207 · 30/08/2020 18:49

My hair is at its best when I come out of the hairdresser but there does seem to be some kind of assumption that you want it super flat and straight which doesn’t sounds like what you wanted.
Perhaps next time be quite insistent that you want it big and bouncy

Roselilly36 · 30/08/2020 18:50

Of course you should expect to leave with your hair looking amazing and how you want it too look.

As few years backed I booked myself into Toni & Guy, a stylist trained in Paris did my hair, she was absolutely brilliant, used lots of small brushes when blow drying, she was working her way around Europe and had left by the time I wanted another appointment. No one else has ever styled my hair the way she did. The best ever cut too.

Justgivemesomepeace · 30/08/2020 18:53

Mine knows to get as much volume as possible in. She always makes a point of saying thats how she'll do it. She blows it up from the roots with a big barrell brush but its still shitter than my attempt which takes half the time. I think it ends up too smooth because she over does it.

Janaih · 30/08/2020 18:55

I have to wear full make up and decent outfit to get that nice finish from the hairdresser. My theory is they dont think you deserve it if you look a bit shabby.

Toilenstripes · 30/08/2020 18:56

@GreyGardens88

Is a stacked bob the "I want to speak to a manager" hairstyle?
Yes, I Googled and it looks like it is. I had that style a couple of years ago and loved it.
LockdownLump · 30/08/2020 18:57

There seems to be a lot of hairdresser moan threads at the moment.

I adore my hairdresser. She's fab. I enjoy going to the salon. My hair always looks lovely when she's finished. I can never do it as nice as she does.

She is a colour specialist so the colour always looks so lovely and shiny and fab condition - until the grey pops through a couple of weeks later 😠

lookatallthosechickens · 30/08/2020 18:57

YABU to have a stacked bob in the year of our lord two thousand and twenty.

Jaxhog · 30/08/2020 18:58

At least you got a blow-dry! My hairdresser does a 'cut and finish', which in my case is often just a 2-second blast because I've got very short hair. He does cut it well though.

Janaih · 30/08/2020 19:00

Dismayed by the comments shaming OPs choice of haircut and referencing that meme. Shame indeed.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 30/08/2020 19:02

Haven’t read all the posts, but YANBU imo. My hairdresser always makes my hair look fab and
“ night out” ready. I had a cut this week and obviously I’m not going out much atm, but I still got some compliments on it the next day. It just looks better when she styles it.

Then washed and styled it myself...no compliments since.🤣

MissBPotter · 30/08/2020 19:03

I agree, I’ve never had a haircut with a good blow dry, they can only use curling tongs to make it look half decent, but the curl always falls out straightaway Sad

nannybeach · 30/08/2020 19:04

What on earth is a "stacked bob"?

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 30/08/2020 19:04

@Janaih. I agree, people can style their hair any way they want- it’s called true feminism and freedom of expression.

Adwodeabo · 30/08/2020 19:07

Maybe your hairdresser doesn’t know how to do the styles of yesteryear? My mum goes specifically to a salon that caters for ladies who want retro styles.

lookatallthosechickens · 30/08/2020 19:10

It’s like none of you have ever heard of google. A stacked bob is a short haircut that’s longer in front of the ears and shorter in the back with layers in the back so has height. It’s pretty out of style now and looks really dated but Victoria Beckham made it popular about 15-20 years ago.

funnylittlefloozie · 30/08/2020 19:10

Sneery and snide isn't a good look, dear. It isnt even "retro".
psychomath · 30/08/2020 19:13

Surprised by all the people leaving with flat hair - I used to have short blonde hair and my hairdresser gave it looooads of volume whenever I had a blow dry, I always thought it made me look like Myra Hindley Blush YANBU to expect pouffiness when it's what you specifically asked for, although in general I agree that they won't know unless you tell them.

PickAChew · 30/08/2020 19:13

@Whenwillow

I hate the post hair salon look. I always go straight home and wash it, blast it with hair dryer then run my fingers through it. My hairdresser knows this, yet she still spends 15 minutes lovingly slathering it with all the bloody 'products' and blow drying it all bouffant. I just let her now as its clearly how she wants me to look when I leave 😂 I always pray that I won't bump into anyone I know between salon and car.
OP needs your stylist :o

It is retro. There’s nothing wrong with that if it’s your style. Lots of ladies stick with the haircuts they had in their 20s. But as time passes not all hairdressers know how to do those styles.

Sciencebabe · 30/08/2020 19:22

I agree with one of the comments above. Maybe she didn't want to do it too OTT as it's quite an out of date look. They always try to give you something current and flattering for your face. My mum can spend over £200 on a cut and perm and gets home only to lob off chunks with the kitchen scissors. She thinks she's making it look better but it's just an awful, outdated constant look she won't let go of.

Bluntness100 · 30/08/2020 19:22

I also think this is about communication. Sleek and natural is the norm now so she likely thinks she has given you some volume, but if you’re looking for big hair (popular in the eighties) then she likely doesn’t realise. Maybe take her a pic of how you do it next time.

I’d also say that at 51 I’m also of the big hair generation and it’s quite ageing to wear that style now. You seldom see young women in their twenties or thirties with big hair like you describe.

I had to retrain myself not to do it, and even take straighteners through the top now to make it sleeker, swishier and shinier looking, and had to force myself to back away from the whole product, back combing, big helmet head of old. And to be honest once you get used to it. It’s much more flattering and youthful.

stovetopespresso · 30/08/2020 19:23

I think I'm hairdresser phobic, ive had so many bad experiences, even from a friend who is a hair dresser! also too stingy with myself to pay that much, it always seems extortionate. I NEVER have come out looking how I want, often have to re-do it myself. sorry for your bad experience op, best ask around for recommendations next time, maybe a one-woman band who you can chat on the phone to about what happened.

stormystormysky · 30/08/2020 19:25

I agree!!
