To expect to have a hair do 'to go out with'

Is it just me or am I being unreasonable to expect that when I pay for a cut and blow that my hair should look ready to go on a night out. I have a stacked bob that I can blow dry to be big in height/volume and look ready to go out. Yesterday I paid my money for a cut and blow and the hairdresser used a small barrel brush and I left with fairly flat looking hair, even after I'd said I wanted it to look top heavy/volume etc. Am I just old fashioned (at 48) to expect to look like I've 'just come out of the hairdresser's' and feel my hair looks good or is a cut and blow nowadays basically someone just drying your hair after cutting it.

I'd love to know what up to date hairstyles some of these snidey posters have

Yes, I would also like to know, seeing as some people on this thread appear to hold themselves up as fashion icons at the cutting edge of hair design! Somehow, I get the feeling I'd be deeply disappointed if I actually saw their hair 😆

Bluntness100 · 01/09/2020 10:41

No one said a Bob was dated, what was said was a stacked Bob was particularly when blow dried big,

Milssofadoesntreallyfit · 01/09/2020 10:52

I've had the opposite problem, I hate them 'blow drying' my hair, I always end up feeling to 'done'.
My hair looks understated even on a night out, I'm just not a fan of 'done up'.

Not that it’s relevant to OP; I reckon up to date bobs are either lob (long bob) length or generally a blunt one length style rather than asymmetrical or graduated. A “stacked Bob” seems to be outdated, my salon’s Instagram doesn’t have any photos of them.

Styling is part of a blow dry service imo so the salon should have done it for her. Maybe the stylist couldn’t blow dry it with volume as they wanted to check the cut was perfect and couldn’t do so if it wasn’t lying naturally.

I always get my hair styled in loose waves which involves curling it after they have already dried it straight and finished the cut. It’s never an issue as it’s already included in the cost! If I wanted it it rough/blast dried alone, it would be a cheaper service with a junior stylist as they expect to style your hair as standard.

I keep asking my hairdresser to dry it messy. Like this but she never does. Does anybody know how to achieve this look?

@skeemee try curling your hair let it cool brush it out. sometimes a hair style looks better the day after its been done, I get a curly blow dry and I have tight bouncy curls for a night out however the next day I have a nice loose wavy curl for a relaxed look as the curls have dropped and relaxed. My hairdressers does a boho blow-dry which looks like this

hastingsmua1 · 01/09/2020 14:34

@skeemee I don’t think that style is due to how it’s dried. They have probably used styling products like a salt spray or texturising cream when it’s already dry, than a load of hairspray. Some of those sections may have even been laid into place using hair straighteners.

@eaglejulesk

Mine looks shocking when I leave as I leave with it wet! Takes a good few washes before it looks decent. Curly hair issues...

I have a new hairdresser - I need to tell him not to dry it, I would rather leave with it wet. And yes, it takes a few washes to get it back to the way I want it after a visit to any hairdresser. Wavy hair issues....

Wavy hair, too. I have an hour on the bus to get home so get mine to scrunch dry my hair. Go home looking really shaggy (but with a fab fringe!) and end up having to do a clarifying wash the next day but it's once every 3 months or so and I like the salon.

Yep - I only get mine cut every three months or so, and I get a great cut so I don't mind spending a few days getting it back to normal!

Has anyone else got the Salon Selectives from the 80s and 90s advert in their head now?

Just me then!

PurpleFlower1983 · 02/09/2020 07:32

My hairdresser is fab and always asks how I want it styling. Usually a loose wave or something.

Menora · 02/09/2020 07:57

I really do not want big volume hair I think this does not seem to be in fashion and probably why people don’t do it in the salon? I had a Bob for years and always made sure I told them please do not make it large and bouncy I want it flat!

I gave up asking them to do this and just asked them to leave it. I think the general sense was that a hairstyle like this wouldn't reflect well on their skills.

I found the beat way to get wavy hair was to twist if (a bit like shit victory rolls) when it's about 80% dry and leave it about half an hour. Then sort of mess it up and spray it when you take it out.

JadesRollerDisco · 02/09/2020 09:21

@skeemee

That looks like it's been curled with straighteners or a small brush has been used to intentionally flick the ends different ways, and then a lot of product to make it look textured not just messy. It's going to take a lot of work to do something that "messy" compared to just blow drying it

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 02/09/2020 09:23

Anna Wintour (not Winter) is dated. She is tragic and has been wearing the same god awful shoes for about 150 years while treating other people like shit as if she's above them. Nobody should be looking to her to set the bar for style or behaviour standards.

Oracle12 · 18/10/2020 13:12

I am old-fashioned and like rollers and sitting under a hairdryer to maintain my curly style. Does anyone know of any hair salons in Cambridge or its surrounding villages who can do this? Am desperate!

BLASTPROCESSING · 18/10/2020 13:35

I'm surprised anyone on MN goes to the hairdressers since they're apparently all shit.

CharlieCoCo · 18/10/2020 18:07

I'm the opposite. I always end up leaving with massive hair thinking I dont like it and once it calms down its how I envisioned jt lol

Rhine · 18/10/2020 18:36

The problem is OP that you have a stacked bob! No offence but it’s pretty difficult to make those look good...

My hairdresser always asks how I want it dried styled, and if I’m going out makes it look bouncier and swisher.
