To expect to have a hair do 'to go out with'

Handbaghag · 30/08/2020 17:33

Is it just me or am I being unreasonable to expect that when I pay for a cut and blow that my hair should look ready to go on a night out. I have a stacked bob that I can blow dry to be big in height/volume and look ready to go out. Yesterday I paid my money for a cut and blow and the hairdresser used a small barrel brush and I left with fairly flat looking hair, even after I'd said I wanted it to look top heavy/volume etc. Am I just old fashioned (at 48) to expect to look like I've 'just come out of the hairdresser's' and feel my hair looks good or is a cut and blow nowadays basically someone just drying your hair after cutting it.

@MsEllany

Now I’ve just read some more comments - we’re seriously saying that maybe the hairdresser doesn’t know how to do a ‘retro blow dry’. Retro. As in - blow dry the roots over the top of a brush instead of under?

Seriously how stupid do you think hairdressers are? This thread is fucking rude. Hairdressers learn how to blow dry hair before they learn how to cut it, this one didn’t do what OP wanted and it’s not because the style was retro and outdated Hmm. Christ alive. She didn’t ask for a blue rinse and a perm.

Oh do calm down. Of all the threads to get upset about. 🤣🤣🤣

What’s being said is more she doesn’t realise how the op wants it. Big hair like she describes has been out of fashion for a long time. So when she said she wanted it big the hairdresser likely thought she was giving her that, in comparison to the often Flat swishy look of today.

Simply the op needs to take a pic. Or indeed she can go someplace they are used to doing this sort of big style.

Brefugee · 31/08/2020 07:38

I think the key thing with a hairdresser is when they ask you at the end if you like it - learn to say "no, i wanted more volume"

And then you get what you want. It's not easy but otherwise you're wasting your money.

Enchantmentz · 31/08/2020 08:41

Just tell your hairdresser how you like it, I love my hairdresser and he knows what I want. I still scrutinise the cut and point out any adjustments I want done or little bits I think he has missed or isn't quite right. He doesn't take offence. I had a retro/ edgy messy bob for years , now growing my hair out due to covid and opportunity for change but I have flat thin hair that is naturally straight I hate it so can't wait to get a cut an see what magic he will do with it.

Handbaghag · 31/08/2020 09:21

Well, thank you to those who answered my question. Safe to say though I now feel worse than when I stepped out of the salon. I forgot how the bitches and witches come out of the woodwork no matter what the post is.🙄

Erm just yo throw in a different perspective my hairdresser explained blow drying at the moment is 10 minutes maximum there's only so much they can do in that time and my experience is they're doing their best

That’s just not true. It might be the salon policy but it’s not standard. All the salons here are blow drying as usual

TeaOneSugar · 31/08/2020 10:20

My hairdresser always asks how I want it finishing while she's cutting it, if I'm going out I'll have it curled and more volume at the roots, if not she'll just do it straight, still a lot nicer than when I dry it myself but just ordinary.

You should get what you want, you're paying for it, unless you book a cut and blow and want a full up do.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 31/08/2020 10:37

Big hair like she describes has been out of fashion for a long time

Except that it hasn't....
Hence why extensions are huge at the moment which create volume at the roots, crown and give extra thickness on the ends. Every trend goes round and round. Ive been watching copious amounts of netflix recently and literally every woman on there had farah fawcett hair- long thick hair with curled ends that waved away from the face- exactly like farah, who had that style in the 70s. If a hair stylist cant even manage to give a decent blow-dry then I would assume they had very little skill at their job....

eaglejulesk · 31/08/2020 10:39

I hate having my hair blow dried and can't wait to get home to wash it and let it dry naturally! Hate, hate, hate that 'just out of the salon' look!

Back to you OP - I don't think they automatically give you a 'ready for a night out' style, they are simply cutting and drying your hair.

Everysinglebloodytime · 31/08/2020 10:48

Bloody hell OP people have been a proper bunch of bitches but if you like it, it doesn't matter what a bunch of randoms on the internet think.

I don't get the wanting to look like you're going out thing but it doesn't matter (and in fact has been a revelation to me that this is a thing).

People who were twats - were you like this at school too?

eaglejulesk · 31/08/2020 10:52

Mine looks shocking when I leave as I leave with it wet! Takes a good few washes before it looks decent. Curly hair issues...

I have a new hairdresser - I need to tell him not to dry it, I would rather leave with it wet. And yes, it takes a few washes to get it back to the way I want it after a visit to any hairdresser. Wavy hair issues....

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 31/08/2020 10:57

personally I'm more concerned that my hair is well cut, rather than having a poor cut obscured by styling.
I don't frazzle it to death using a hairdryer or any other heated styling tools - why would i want anyone else to?

my hairdresser currently not offering drying because of covid risk

SerenDippitty · 31/08/2020 11:00

Don’t get this thing about hairstyles being dated. I would have thought the most important thing about a hair style is that it suits you and your hair type. What’s the point of having a bang on trend hairstyle if it looks awful on you?

Sophoa · 31/08/2020 11:04

I totally agree. I said before but I am totally amazed at the comments from people that stylists can’t blowdry. I just don’t know where people are getting their hair done. I totally expect to have a great blowdry when I am having my hair done. Big bouncy curly blowdry hair such as the duchess of Cambridge is totally in at the moment and I Would 100% expect any hairdresser to be able to give a blowdry, which ever style you ask for which holds until you next wash it. If they can’t then you need to find a new salon.

justanotherneighinparadise · 31/08/2020 11:06

Not in my experience no. I never pay for a blow dry as I always do my hair better than the hairdresser.

If I went there specifically for a blow dry though to save me dong it myself, I’d be pretty pushed off to have to repeat the process at home.

justanotherneighinparadise · 31/08/2020 11:06

AyeCorona1 · 31/08/2020 12:08

I never 'got' the hairdresser thing - would just go to whoever had space on the day I decided I fancied a cut, zero loyalty and no consistency to either stylist or style!

My current hairdresser is AMAZING - I have naturally wavy hair that I've always hated and my default style is ponytail. Every single time I see her she asks how I want it - straight/big/wavy/Charlie's Angels/curly - and I get what I want. I almost float out of there, and usually do book appointments to coinside with special nights out. I book my next appointment as I leave, in fact I'm booked up to Christmas.

Use your words ladies - take pics in of what you want, don't be afraid to speak to your hairdresser about what you really want!

Wexone · 31/08/2020 12:10

On reading this I am shocked, the amount of people who are complaining about their hairdressers not doing their job correctly why are you still going to them? I have very long thick hair and it took me years to find the right hairdresser who can cut it right, but I found her 10 years again and now travel an hour and a half to get my hair cut each time. But I am happy with the service and would change nothing when I leave. I often get my hair blow dried if I have a special occasion or need some cheering up as I can not do it myself. I have very rarely have to go home and fix it myself and get at least three days out of it. That's what I expect from it. I am sorry a blowdry is one of the 1st things a hairdressers leans how to do and if he or she can not do it right then something is not right. To all the people who have wavy or curly hair, their are hairdressers trained to cut this right aswell,

I'd love to know what up to date hairstyles some of these snidey posters have.

user1471590586 · 31/08/2020 12:36

My hair always looks flat after going to the hairdressers. She drys and straightens it flat to precision cut my fringe. I never actually bother to blow dry or straighten my hair at home (it is already pretty straight) and it naturally drys fuller in volume.

PuppyMonkey · 31/08/2020 12:39

Well done to everyone who has managed to get the requisite MN smug comment about graduated bob haircuts on this thread - so helpful. Bonus point to the poster who mentioned the Speak to the Manager cut. My sides.

Honestly OP, some hairdressers just don’t do what you say no matter how carefully you explain what you want. And there’s some strange phenomenon that happens when you’re in there which compels you to say “yes that’s lovely” even if you hate it. Keep searching though, you WILL find the perfect stylist one day, just keep looking.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 31/08/2020 12:45

I think hair dried pouffy/bouncy hair isnt terribly in style atm but if that's what OP asked for, it's what the hairdresser should have done!

Bluntness100 · 31/08/2020 12:45

Extensions are a very very different animal to a big short stacked Bob. Genuinely the two have nothing in common at all.

That’s like saying rainbow hair is all the rage because some folks dye their hair brown, it’s all dying. Or pierced noses are no different to pierced ears, because it’s all piercings . Or that wearing four inch heels are the same as trainers because they are all shoes. Or that cats are the same as dogs, because they are all pets

Covid chic love. V natural, uncut undyed hair, washed about 4 days ago and left to dry hanging down your back.

PawPawNoodle · 31/08/2020 14:56

I think blowdrying and styling are two different things. The hairdresser that I go to, for example, is 'cut and dry' which for the most part includes just drying the hair. This could be a rough dry or a blow-out. I am lucky that my stylist blowdries my hair very nicely and it is good enough for me to go out with, but I dont really 'do' my hair anyway. If I wanted it styled a specific way thats an extra cost.

A bob is a classic look. I'm not sure why you seem so insistent that its dated. Bobs will never go out of fashion because they are one of the standard haircuts that have existed for decades. Yes, the shape of them sometimes change according to trend but the basic bob never goes out of fashion (and no, I dont have a bob before someone jumps in lol).

Anna Winter- editor of Vogue has a classic bob. Maybe you should tell her she's dated!
